Continuous and accurate biomass measurement is a critical enabler for control, decision making, and optimization in modern plant production systems. It supports the development of plant growth models for advanced control strategies like model predictive control, and enables responsive, data-driven, and plant state-dependent cultivation. Traditional biomass measurement methods, such as destructive sampling, are time-consuming and unsuitable for high-frequency monitoring. In contrast, image-based estimation using computer vision and deep learning requires frequent retraining and is sensitive to changes in lighting or plant morphology. This work introduces a low-cost, load-cell-based biomass monitoring system tailored for vertical farming applications. The system operates at the level of individual growing trays, offering a valuable middle ground between impractical plant-level sensing and overly coarse rack-level measurements. Tray-level data allow localized control actions, such as adjusting light spectrum and intensity per tray, thereby enhancing the utility of controllable LED systems. This granularity supports layer-specific optimization and anomaly detection, which are not feasible with rack-level feedback. The biomass sensor is easily scalable and can be retrofitted, addressing common challenges such as mechanical noise and thermal drift. It offers a practical and robust solution for biomass monitoring in dynamic, growing environments, enabling finer control and smarter decision making in both commercial and research-oriented vertical farming systems. The developed sensor was tested and validated against manual harvest data, demonstrating high agreement with actual plant biomass and confirming its suitability for integration into vertical farming systems. Lightweight steel-framing (LSF) systems have become increasingly prominent in modern construction due to their structural efficiency, design flexibility, and sustainability. However, traditional facade materials such as stone are often cost-prohibitive, and brick veneers—despite their popularity—pose seismic performance concerns. This study introduces an innovative porcelain sheathing system for cold-formed steel (CFS) shear walls. Porcelain has no veins thus it offers integrated and reliable strength unlike granite. Four full-scale CFS shear walls incorporating screwed porcelain sheathing (SPS) were tested under combined cyclic lateral and constant gravity loading. The experimental program investigated key seismic characteristics, including lateral stiffness and strength, deformation capacity, failure modes, and energy dissipation, to calculate the system response modification factor (R). The test results showed that configurations with horizontal sheathing, double mid-studs, and three blocking rows improved performance, achieving up to 21.1 kN lateral resistance and 2.5% drift capacity. The average R-factor was 4.2, which exceeds the current design code values (AISI S213: R = 3; AS/NZS 4600: R = 2), suggesting the enhanced seismic resilience of the SPS-CFS system. This study also proposes design improvements to reduce the risk of brittle failure and enhance inelastic behavior. In addition, the results inform discussions on permissible building heights and contribute to the advancement of CFS design codes for seismic regions. Full article

A facile and versatile strategy to obtain NPs@ZnAlO nanocomposite materials, comprising controlled-size nanoparticles (NPs) within a ZnAlO matrix is reported. The mono-(Au, Ni) and bimetallic (Ni-Au) NPs serving as an active phase were prepared by the polyol-alkaline method, while the ZnAlO support was obtained via the thermal decomposition of its corresponding layered double hydroxide (LDH) precursors. X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns confirmed the successful fabrication of the nanocomposites, including the synthesis of the metallic NPs, the formation of LDH-like structure, and the subsequent transformation to ZnO phase upon LDH calcination. The obtained nanostructures confirmed the nanoplate-like morphology inherited from the original LDH precursors, which tended to aggregate after the addition of gold NPs. According to the UV-Vis spectroscopy, loading NPs onto the ZnAlO support enhanced the light absorption and reduced the band gap energy. ATR-DRIFT spectroscopy, H2-TPR measurements, and XPS analysis provided information about the functional groups, surface composition, and reducibility of the materials. The catalytic performance of the developed nanostructures was evaluated by the photodegradation of bisphenol A (BPA), under simulated solar irradiation. The conversion of BPA over the bimetallic Ni-Au@ZnAlO reached up to 95% after 180 min of irradiation, exceeding the monometallic Ni@ZnAlO and Au@ZnAlO catalysts. Its enhanced activity was correlated with good dispersion of the bimetals, narrower band gap, and efficient charge carrier separation of the photo-induced e/h+ pairs. Full article

In this study, we propose a bidirectional chemical sensor platform based on a reconfigurable ion-sensitive field-effect transistor (R-ISFET) architecture. The device incorporates Ni-silicide Schottky barrier source/drain (S/D) contacts, enabling ambipolar conduction and bidirectional turn-on behavior for both p-type and n-type configurations. Channel polarity is dynamically controlled via the program gate (PG), while the control gate (CG) suppresses leakage current, enhancing operational stability and energy efficiency. A dual-control-gate (DCG) structure enhances capacitive coupling, enabling sensitivity beyond the Nernst limit without external amplification. The extended-gate (EG) architecture physically separates the transistor and sensing regions, improving durability and long-term reliability. Electrical characteristics were evaluated through transfer and output curves, and carrier transport mechanisms were analyzed using band diagrams. Sensor performance—including sensitivity, hysteresis, and drift—was assessed under various pH conditions and external noise up to 5 Vpp (i.e., peak-to-peak voltage). The n-type configuration exhibited high mobility and fast response, while the p-type configuration demonstrated excellent noise immunity and low drift. Both modes showed consistent sensitivity trends, confirming the feasibility of complementary sensing. These results indicate that the proposed R-ISFET sensor enables selective mode switching for high sensitivity and robust operation, offering strong potential for next-generation biosensing and chemical detection. Inertial navigation systems (INSs) exhibit distinctive characteristics, such as long-duration operation, full autonomy, and exceptional covertness compared to other navigation systems. However, errors are accumulated over time due to operational principles and the limitations of sensors. To address this problem, this study theoretically explores a numerically simulated integrated inertial navigation system consisting of a single-axis cold atom interferometer gyroscope (CAIG) and a conventional inertial measurement unit (IMU). The system leverages the low bias and drift of the CAIG and the high sampling rate of the conventional IMU to obtain more accurate navigation information. Furthermore, an adaptive gradient ascent (AGA) method is proposed to estimate the variance of the measurement noise online for the Kalman filter. It was found that errors of latitude, longitude, and positioning are reduced by 43.9%, 32.6%, and 32.3% compared with the conventional IMU over 24 h. On this basis, errors from inertial sensor drift could be further reduced by the online Kalman filter. Full article

Stress fields imparted with an ultrafast laser can correct low spatial frequency surface figure error of mirrors through ultrafast laser stress figuring (ULSF): the formation of nanograting structures within the bulk substrate generates localized stress, creating bending moments that equilibrize via wafer deformation. For ULSF to be used as an optical figuring process, the ultrafast laser generated stress must be effectively permanent or risk unwanted figure drift. Two isochronal annealing experiments were performed to measure ultrafast laser-generated stress stability in fused silica and Corning ultra-low expansion (ULE) wafers. The first experiment tracked changes to induced astigmatism up to 1000 °C on 25.4 mm-diameter wafers. Only small changes were measured after each thermal cycle up to 500 °C for both materials, but significant changes were observed at higher temperatures. The second experiment tracked stress changes in fused silica and ULE up to 500 °C but with 4 to 16× higher signal-to-noise ratio. Change in trefoil on 100 mm-diameter wafers was measured, and the induced stress in fused silica and ULE was found to be stable after thermal cycling up to 300 °C and 200 °C, respectively, with larger changes at higher temperatures. Cumulative mistuning effects in electric vehicle wireless charging systems, arising from component tolerances, coil misalignments, and aging-induced drifts, can significantly degrade system performance. To mitigate this issue, this work establishes an analysis model for mistuned series–series-compensated wireless power transfer (WPT) systems. Through equivalent simplification of mistuned parameters, we systematically examine the effects of compensation capacitances and coil inductances on input impedance, output power, and efficiency in SS-compensated topologies across wide load ranges and different coupling coefficients. Results reveal that transmitter-side parameter deviations exert more pronounced impacts on input impedance and power gain than receiver-side variations. Remarkably, under receiver-side inductance mistuning of −20%, a significant 32° shift in the input impedance angle was observed. Experimental validation on a 500 W prototype confirms ≤5% maximum deviation between calculated and measured values for efficiency, input impedance angle, and power gain. Full article

Since the initial use of biological ion channels to detect single-stranded genomic base pair differences, label-free and highly sensitive resistive pulse sensing (RPS) with nanopores has made remarkable progress in single-molecule analysis. By monitoring transient ionic current disruptions caused by molecules translocating through a nanopore, this technology offers detailed insights into the structure, charge, and dynamics of the analytes. In this work, the RPS platforms based on biological, solid-state, and other sensing pores, detailing their latest research progress and applications, are reviewed. Their core capability is the high-precision characterization of tiny particles, ions, and nucleotides, which are widely used in biomedicine, clinical diagnosis, and environmental monitoring. However, current RPS methods involve bottlenecks, including limited sensitivity (weak signals from sub-nanometer targets with low SNR), complex sample interference (high false positives from ionic strength, etc.), and field consistency (solid-state channel drift, short-lived bio-pores failing POCT needs). To overcome this, bio-solid-state fusion channels, in-well reactors, deep learning models, and transfer learning provide various options. Evolving into an intelligent sensing ecosystem, RPS is expected to become a universal platform linking basic research, precision medicine, and on-site rapid detection. Full article

In the process of plant protection for fruit trees using rotary-wing UAVs, challenges such as droplet drift, insufficient canopy penetration, and low agrochemical utilization efficiency remain prominent. Among these, the uncertainty in the spatio-temporal distribution of downwash airflow is a key factor contributing to non-uniform droplet deposition and increased drift. To address this issue, we developed a wind field numerical simulation model based on an improved hierarchical leaf density model to clarify the spatio-temporal characteristics of downwash airflow, the scale of turbulence regions, and their effects on internal canopy airflow under varying flight altitudes and different rotor speeds. Field experiments were conducted in orchards to validate the accuracy of the model. Simulation results showed that the average error between the simulated and measured wind speeds inside the canopy was 8.4%, representing a 42.11% reduction compared to the non-hierarchical model and significantly improving the prediction accuracy. The coefficient of variation (CV) was 0.26 in the middle canopy layer and 0.29 in the lower layer, indicating a decreasing trend with an increasing canopy height. We systematically analyzed the variation in turbulence region scales under different flight conditions. This study provides theoretical support for optimizing UAV operation parameters to improve droplet deposition uniformity and enhance agrochemical utilization efficiency. Full article

Articulated arm coordinate measuring machines are designed for in situ use directly in manufacturing environments, enabling efficient dimensional control outside of climate-controlled laboratories. This study investigates the influence of ambient temperature variation on the accuracy of length measurements performed with the Hexagon Absolute Arm 8312. The experiment was carried out in a laboratory setting simulating typical shop floor conditions through controlled temperature changes in the range of approximately 20–31 °C. A calibrated steel gauge block was used as a reference standard, allowing separation of the influence of the measuring system from that of the measured object. The results showed that the gauge block length changed in line with the expected thermal expansion, while the articulated arm coordinate measuring machine exhibited only a minor residual thermal drift and stable performance. The experiment also revealed a constant measurement offset of approximately 22 µm, likely due to calibration deviation. As part of the study, an uncertainty budget was developed, taking into account all relevant sources of influence and enabling a more realistic estimation of accuracy under operational conditions. The study confirms that modern carbon composite articulated arm coordinate measuring machines with integrated compensation can maintain stable measurement behavior even under fluctuating temperatures in controlled environments. The multiscale interactive system composed of wind, leaves, and droplets serves as a critical dynamic unit in precision orchard spraying. Its coupling mechanisms fundamentally influence pesticide transport pathways, deposition patterns, and drift behavior within crop canopies, forming the foundational basis for achieving intelligent and site-specific spraying operations. This review systematically examines the synergistic dynamics across three hierarchical scales: Droplet–leaf surface wetting and adhesion at the microscale; leaf cluster motion responses at the mesoscale; and the modulation of airflow and spray plume diffusion by canopy architecture at the macroscale. Key variables affecting spray performance—such as wind speed and turbulence structure, leaf biomechanical properties, droplet size and electrostatic characteristics, and spatial canopy heterogeneity—are identified and analyzed. Furthermore, current advances in multiscale modeling approaches and their corresponding experimental validation techniques are critically evaluated, along with their practical boundaries of applicability. Results indicate that while substantial progress has been made at individual scales, significant bottlenecks remain in the integration of cross-scale models, real-time acquisition of critical parameters, and the establishment of high-fidelity experimental platforms. Future research should prioritize the development of unified coupling frameworks, the integration of physics-based and data-driven modeling strategies, and the deployment of multimodal sensing technologies for real-time intelligent spray decision-making. These efforts are expected to provide both theoretical foundations and technological support for advancing precision and intelligent orchard spraying systems. Full article

This study proposes an enhanced integration framework for the global navigation satellite system (GNSS) and inertial navigation system (INS). The framework combines real-time differential GNSS corrections with an adaptive extended Kalman filter (EKF) to address positional accuracy and system robustness challenges in practical navigation scenarios. The proposed method dynamically compensates for positioning inaccuracies and sensor drift by integrating differential GNSS corrections to reduce errors and employing an adaptive EKF to address temporal synchronization discrepancies and misalignment angle deviations. Simulation and experimental results demonstrate that the framework keeps horizontal positioning error within 2 m and achieves a maximum accuracy improvement of 4.2 m compared to conventional single-point positioning. This low-cost solution ensures robust performance for practical autonomous navigation scenarios. Full article

This study examines the impact of reproductive inequality on the long-term survival of Homo sapiens by comparing two reproductive models: the Pareto (power-law) distribution of unequal reproduction and the Gaussian (normal) distribution of equal reproduction. We conducted simulations to explore how genetic diversity, measured by heterozygosity, evolves over time. The results predict population crashes due to genetic bottlenecks under both models, but with large differences in timing. We refer to Pareto reproductive inequality as the Genghis Khan effect. This effect accelerates the loss of genetic diversity, increasing the species’ vulnerability to environmental stressors, resource depletion, and genetic drift, and thereby raising the risk of an earlier population collapse. Our findings showcase the importance of reproductive balance for the prolonged presence of Homo sapiens on this planet. Full article

Accurate localization plays a critical role in enabling underwater vehicle autonomy. In this work, we develop a robust infrastructure-based localization framework that estimates the position and orientation of underwater vehicles using only range measurements from long baseline (LBL) acoustic beacons to multiple on-board receivers. The proposed framework integrates three key components, each formulated as a convex optimization problem. First, we introduce a robust calibration function that unifies multiple sources of measurement error—such as range-dependent degradation, variable sound speed, and latency—by modeling them through a monotonic function. This function bounds the true distance and defines a convex feasible set for each receiver location. Next, we estimate the receiver positions as the center of this feasible region, using two notions of centrality: the Chebyshev center and the maximum volume inscribed ellipsoid (MVE), both formulated as convex programs. Finally, we recover the vehicle’s full 6-DOF pose by enforcing rigid-body constraints on the estimated receiver positions. To do this, we leverage the known geometric configuration of the receivers in the vehicle and solve the Orthogonal Procrustes Problem to compute the rotation matrix that best aligns the estimated and known configurations, thereby correcting the position estimates and determining the vehicle orientation. We evaluate the proposed method through both numerical simulations and field experiments. To further enhance robustness under real-world conditions, we model beacon-location uncertainty—due to mooring slack and water currents—as bounded spherical regions around nominal beacon positions. We then mitigate the uncertainty by integrating the modified range constraints into the MVE position estimation formulation, ensuring reliable localization even under infrastructure drift. Addressing lateral-directional control challenges during unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) landing in complex wind fields, this study proposes a drift angle control strategy that integrates coordinated heading and trajectory regulation. An adaptive radius optimization method for the Dubins approach path is designed using wind speed estimation. By developing a wind-coupled flight dynamics model, we establish a roll angle control loop combining the L1 nonlinear guidance law with Linear Active Disturbance Rejection Control (LADRC). Simulation tests against conventional sideslip approach and crab approach, along with flight tests, confirm that the proposed autonomous landing system achieves smoother attitude transitions during landing while meeting all touchdown performance requirements. This solution provides a theoretically rigorous and practically viable approach for safe UAV landings in challenging wind conditions. Full article
