Great toe strength (GTS) is critical for gait, balance, and mobility, yet reliable assessment methods are lacking. This scoping review aims to evaluate and synthesize the direct methods of GTS assessment and their corresponding measurement protocols to guide clinical and research applications. Following the Joanna Briggs Institute methodology, five databases were searched: PubMed, CINAHL, Embase, Web of Science, and IEEE Xplore. All publications on or before 16 December 2024 were included in this review. Studies were included if they quantified isolated great toe strength in human participants using direct measurement tools with non-normalized force outcomes, while exclusion criteria included non-human models, indirect assessments (e.g., electromyography), and multi-digit or dynamic tasks. Following the initial screening of the results, the information from the included articles were extracted into Excel for analyses and synthesis. Two independent reviewers screened titles/abstracts and full texts using Covidence. Conflicts were resolved via consensus or consultation with a third reviewer. We identified 55 studies involving 2821 participants that met our inclusion criteria. Four types of direct GTS assessment methods were identified: dynamometry (56%), manual muscle testing (11%), force transducers (13%), and load cells/strain gauges (18%). Dynamometry was the most common but showed variable reliability due to non-standardized protocols. Healthy individuals exhibited higher GTS (95.01 N) than those with conditions like hallux injury (6.1 N), though plantar fasciitis/plantar heel pain populations showed unexpectedly high GTS (133.27 N). No clear age-related GTS trend emerged, likely due to methodological variability. Less than 11% of studies measured extension strength, highlighting a critical research gap. COVID-19, caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus, has become a global public health crisis with diverse clinical manifestations affecting multiple organ systems, including the integumentary system. One notable cutaneous manifestation, referred to as “COVID toes,” involves the development of pernio-like chilblains, characterized by red-to-violet macules, plaques, or nodules, primarily on toes and fingers. This characteristic clinical feature gained significant attention due to its apparent association with COVID-19, especially during the early stages of the pandemic when individuals with mild or asymptomatic cases exhibited these symptoms. Concurrently, digital platforms such as Google Trends have emerged as tools for tracking public interest in health-related topics, offering insights into real-time patterns of disease awareness. Previous research has demonstrated that Google Trends data may correlate with the incidence of infectious diseases, suggesting that search interest can be a proxy for disease outbreaks. In this study, we sought to explore the potential relationship between public interest in COVID toes, as reflected in Google Trends, and the incidence and mortality rates of COVID-19. Specifically, we examined whether peaks in search interest for “COVID toes” corresponded with surges in COVID-19 cases and deaths. By analyzing trends in search data, we aimed to assess the utility of digital platforms as an epidemiological tool for monitoring disease progression and public awareness. Our findings provide insights into the potential role of digital search data in forecasting outbreaks and highlight the interplay between public perception and the clinical burden of COVID-19, emphasizing the importance of real-time data in public health surveillance and response. Growing concern over food safety and adulteration has thrust milk traceability technologies to the forefront of agrifood supply chains. This qualitative study explores the technological, organisational, and environmental (TOE) determinants of traceability technology adoption in Saudi Arabia’s dairy sector. In-depth semi-structured interviews with nine senior managers from small-, medium-, and large-scale dairy farms were analysed thematically in NVivo. Thematic analysis revealed that technological cost and compatibility played crucial role, while contrary to the prior literature, respondents downplayed technological complexity, arguing that training could offset it. Organisational culture and employee resistance were the primary inhibitors within dairy firms. Saudi Vision 2030, post COVID-19 consumer pressure and competitor pressure emerged as the dominant environmental factors. The findings offer insights for managers and policymakers on how to improve supply chain transparency, operational efficiency, product quality, and consumer trust while advancing several UN SDGs. Background and Objectives: Lower extremity amputations (LEAs) represent a significant health problem. The aim of our study was to analyse the type and trends of diabetes-related LEAs in patients hospitalized in one surgical centre in Bucharest between 2018 and 2021. The second aim was to assess the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the trends of LEAs. Materials and Methods: We performed a retrospective analysis of all lower limb amputations performed between 01 January 2018 and 31 December 2021 in the Department of Surgery, Dr. I. Cantacuzino Clinical Hospital, Bucharest, Romania. We evaluated demographic parameters, type of LEA, the level, the laterality and trends of the amputations, the main aetiologies leading to amputation, and the length of hospitalization. Results: During the study period, 1711 patients underwent an LEA. The mean age was 64.53 ± 9.93 years, 71.6% (n = 1481) being over 60. Men outnumbered women by a ratio of 3.62:1. The most frequent interventions were ray amputations in 41.2% (n = 705) of patients; then, there were amputations of the toe (20.4%, n = 349), transtibial amputations (18.9%, n = 323), transfemoral amputations (10.6%, n = 181), and midfoot amputations (9%, n = 154). Wet gangrene was the most frequent aetiology (40.9%, n = 699). The total number of LEAs decreased constantly throughout the analysed period, such that 616 LEAs were performed in 2018 and 323 LEAs in 2021 (p < 0.001). There was a statistically significant increase in the rate of major LEAs in the pandemic vs. pre-pandemic period (37% vs. 24.4%, p < 0.001). Conclusions: In our study, the total number of LEAs decreased throughout the analysed period, but there was an increase in the rate of major LEAs in the pandemic vs. pre-pandemic period. Being over 65 years of age, leucocytosis, sepsis at presentation, and diabetic polyneuropathy were important risk factors for the necessity of LEA in complicated diabetes-related foot disease. During the health crisis caused by COVID-19, virtual reality (VR) proved to be useful for the tourism industry, allowing this industry to continue working despite the restrictions imposed. However, it remains to be seen if the impact of this sanitary crisis in the tourism industry influenced managers’ intention to adopt this technology in the post-pandemic period. To fill this gap, a qualitative methodological approach was adopted, using the MAXQDA20 software and interviews with managers of tourism enterprises. The results show that the willingness to invest in technology, the perception of VR as a business strategy, and the perception of the impact of the pandemic are factors that regulate the intention of companies to adopt VR. In addition, prior experience with VR and the perception of technical support are also important for its adoption. Thus, it was concluded that VR can be a valuable sustainable strategy for tourism companies to address the challenges imposed by the pandemic. However, adopting the technology depends on factors such as financial availability, business strategy, and previous experience with VR. Furthermore, tourism companies must also receive adequate technical support to ensure its correct implementation. Full article

Apart from well-known respiratory symptoms, less frequent symptoms also appear as a direct result of COVID-19 infection, or as indirect effects of the recommended quarantine and related lifestyle changes. The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on human skin is predominantly focused on in this article. Cutaneous manifestations, including redness, chilblain-like symptoms (COVID toes), hives or urticaria rash, water blisters, and fishing net-like red-blue patterns on the skin, may appear as accompanying or as systemic COVID-19 symptoms with potential lesions at different skin sites. These symptoms were related to skin phototypes and vitamin D deficiency. Moreover, Black, Asian, and minority ethnic origin patients are found to be more sensitive to COVID-19 infection than Caucasians because of vitamin D deficiency. The region of population with lighter skin phototypes have a significantly higher chance to develop cutaneous manifestations than population with dark skin. In addition, adverse effects, such as skin barrier damage and irritation, may also occur due to extensive personal protective equipment usage (e.g., masks, protective suits, and a few others) and predominately alcohol-based sanitizers. This manuscript covers various aspects of COVID-19 and its clinical skin manifestations. Full article

The current study aims to investigate the factors that affect a hotels’ decision to adopt digital technologies. Our theoretical grounding builds on the Technology–Organization–Environment (TOE) research framework. Our research model was validated through a survey of 502 hoteliers and managers using the Partial Least Squares–Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) statistical method. The results indicated that micro, small and medium-sized enterprise (MSME) hotels affected by the COVID-19 outbreak are more likely to adopt digital technologies. The intention to adopt digital technology is positively and significantly influenced by the digital maturity of organizations, financial resource availability and government regulations. The current study investigates rather less explored factors, such as the organizational digital maturity, which consists of a multi-dimensional latent variable. Our findings may be employed to guide the formulation of digital strategies by hospitality industry organizations. Full article

Even after the COVID-19 pandemic, the use of the learning management system (LMS) is still low among university lecturers in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq. The objective of the current study is to understand the factors influencing LMS usage in universities using indicators from Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) and Technology–Organisation–Environment (TOE) framework. This study examined system quality, service quality, information quality, technical support, and government policies as essential variables for affecting LMS usage using perceived ease of use (PEOU) and perceived usefulness (PU) as mediating variables. To reach the aim of this study, the conceptual model was proposed based on TAM integrated with external factors adapted from TOE framework. Quantitative research using a questionnaire was conducted on a sample of 393 lecturers. The study used a structural equation modelling technique, and the results were analysed by SmartPLS 4.0 software. The findings show that information quality significantly correlates with PU and PEOU. Service quality, system quality, and government policy show a significant relationship with either PU or PEOU. However, technical support shows an insignificant relationship with PU and PEOU. Inside the TAM itself, PU and PEOU significantly correlate with LMS usage. Finally, the current study demonstrated the role of PU and POEU as mediators between external factors and LMS usage. These study findings have implications for research and practice to guide university leaders and policymakers in understanding the factors that must be addressed. Full article

The information technology (IT) revolutionization aside with the emergence of COVID-19 have catalyzed cloud-computing services and systems with multiple end-user benefits for online business management, specifically in the accounting discipline. For example, cloud accounting enables the significant reduction of organisational IT investment with flexible access to a large group of scalable resources. The cloud accounting enables small and medium size enterprises (SMEs) to independently engage in fundamental bookkeeping responsibilities rather than hiring external auditors for the same services. As cloud-based accounting adoption remains in the preliminary stage within Jordanian businesses, this study applied the technology, organisation, and environment model to explore cloud accounting among Jordanian SMEs. The study data were gathered from 156 Jordanian SME owners or managers with a structured online survey questionnaire. The recommended study framework encompassed seven determinants that influenced the cloud accounting adoption intention. Resultantly, except Perceived knowledge uncertainty factor, the proposed hypotheses were supported as the aforementioned factors (relative advantages, security concerns, top management support, organizational readiness, competitor’s intensity and suppliers computing support) positively and significantly influenced the cloud accounting of Jordanian SMEs. The study outcomes could facilitate IT field decision-makers and practitioners by investigating an actual cloud accounting case based on the essentiality of its application. Full article

The COVID-19 pandemic and the subsequent increased use of digital tools can be seen as an incentive for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) to adapt to the digital age. SMEs, whose resilience and adaptability had already been tested during the previous period of the global financial crisis, were called upon to face a new emergency. The aim of this paper is twofold: (i) to investigate the evolution of digital transformation in small and medium enterprises during the pandemic of COVID-19 and (ii) to highlight the main research trends of digital transformation in the post-pandemic era. To approach these issues, a bibliometric analysis based on R package was conducted and examined 765 articles that were published in the timespan of 2014–2022. In the current bibliometric analysis, a range of indicators were applied, such as co-citation analysis of both sources and institutions, the annual scientific production, country collaboration map, world tree map and Multiple Correspondence Analysis. The bibliometric software of Biblioshiny and VOSviewer were used as the main tools to process the data and contributed to the visualization of the results. Findings of the research show that emerging technologies such as blockchain, artificial intelligence, machine learning and 3D printing have started integrating SMEs in their business models. In addition, the technology–organization–environment framework (TOE) has emerged as a niche theme in the research field of digital transformation of SMEs. The above reveals the willingness and the effort of SMEs to adapt to the new circumstances created by the pandemic of COVID-19, by transforming their business models from conventional to digital one. The social media model is also highlighted, as a new product development of SMEs during the crisis of pandemic of COVID-19. The intention to adopt both TOE business model and social media are significantly influenced by emerging technologies and can raise the awareness of government to support SMEs in this effort. Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) causing coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has been a rising concern since its declaration as a pandemic by the World Health Organization on 11 March 2020. Recently, its association with multiple underlying organs has been identified that includes cardiac, renal, gastrointestinal, nervous systems, and cutaneous manifestations. Cutaneous COVID-19 findings have been supposedly classified into the following categories: vesicular (varicella-like), papulo-vesiculsar, chilblains-like (“COVID toes”) maculopapular, and urticarial morphologies. In this review, we aim to focus on the proposed pathophysiology behind the various dermatological manifestations associated with COVID-19 and their associated management. We also included prevalence and clinical features of the different COVID-19-related skin lesions in our review. A comprehensive narrative review of the literature was performed in PubMed databases. Data from case reports, observational studies, case series, and reviews till June 2022 were all screened and included in the review. Full article

Currently, in terms of reducing the infection risk of the COVID-19 virus spreading all over the world, the development of touchless blood pressure (BP) measurement has potential benefits. The pulse transit time (PTT) has a high relation with BP, which can be measured by electrocardiogram (ECG) and photoplethysmogram (PPG). The ballistocardiogram (BCG) reflects the mechanical vibration (or displacement) caused by the heart contraction/relaxation (or heart beating), which can be measured from multiple degrees of the body. The goal of this study is to develop a cuffless and touchless BP-measurement method based on a commercial weight scale combined with a PPG sensor when measuring body weight. The proposed method was that the PTTBCG-PPGT was extracted from the BCG signal measured by a weight scale, and the PPG signal was measured from the PPG probe placed at the toe. Four PTT models were used to estimate BP. The reference method was the PTTECG-PPGF extracted from the ECG signal and PPG signal measured from the PPG probe placed at the finger. The standard BP was measured by an electronic blood pressure monitor. Twenty subjects were recruited in this study. By the proposed method, the root-mean-square error (ERMS) of estimated systolic blood pressure (SBP) and diastolic blood pressure (DBP) are 6.7 ± 1.60 mmHg and 4.8 ± 1.47 mmHg, respectively. The correlation coefficients, r2, of the proposed model for the SBP and DBP are 0.606 ± 0.142 and 0.284 ± 0.166, respectively. The results show that the proposed method can serve for cuffless and touchless BP measurement. Full article

The Determinants of the Usage of Accounting Information Systems toward Operational Efficiency in Industrial Revolution 4.0: Evidence from an Emerging Economy

The purpose of this study is to determine the factors affecting the application of accounting information systems (AIS) in small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in Vietnam. Drawing upon the Technology–Organization–Environment (TOE) theoretical framework, Diffusion of Innovations theory (DOI), and Resource-based theory (RBV), we proposed a research model to investigate the antecedents and influence of AIS usage in Vietnamese SMEs. This study used an online survey of individuals who work in Vietnamese SMEs for data collection. The result was assembled by applying the PLS-SEM model to test the proposed hypotheses based on 132 valid responses. First, the factors that have a significant impact on AIS usage are as follows: relative advantage; owner/manager commitment; and impact of COVID-19. Second, the research results also confirm that there is a positive relationship between AIS usage and AIS effectiveness; AIS performance has a positive impact on business performance. Research implications are to help business owners and leaders decide whether to use AIS to strengthen the company’s position and reduce the burden on departments, particularly the accounting department. Your Money or Your Sense of Smell? A Comparative Analysis of the Sensory and Psychological Value of Olfaction

In public discourse, the sense of smell is typically characterized as the least important of the five senses. However, there are very little empirical data on this topic. Recently, much more attention has been brought to the sense of smell since olfactory dysfunction is a primary and often long-term symptom of COVID-19 infection. It was therefore of interest to expand research on the perceived value of olfaction in the current cultural condition. We developed a survey that directly compared the value of the senses of smell, hearing, and vision with each other and in relation to nine common items representing digital, material, personal, and physical commodities of varying social and emotional meaningfulness (phone, $10,000, favorite social media, online shopping, favorite streaming service, dream vacation, pet, hair, little left toe). In total, four hundred and seven female and male respondents comprising two life-stage groups (college students, general public adults) participated in our online survey study during winter–spring of 2021. The results reveal that the sense of smell was perceived as vastly less important than vision and hearing and much less valuable than various common commodities. We also found that life-stage and gender mediated our findings. For example, one-quarter of the college student respondents would give up their sense of smell in order to keep their phone and nearly half of all women would give up their sense of smell to keep their hair. Our data further illustrate that the senses of vision and hearing are valued relatively similarly. A number of questions arise from the present data and suggestions for ways in which our survey can be expanded and altered to address further research are discussed. Full article

Agreement between 3D Motion Analysis and Tele-Assessment Using a Video Conferencing Application for Telerehabilitation

The global pandemic of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has highlighted the need for remote healthcare services. This study aimed to evaluate the concurrent validity and reliability of tele-assessment using 3D motion analysis and video conferencing applications. The subjects of this study were 14 Pilates instructors and 14 healthy adults, who repeated five exercises of “side spine stretch”, “bridge”, “toe taps”, “quadruped leg raise”, and “cat and cow” five times each. We performed 3D kinematic analysis with 16 infrared cameras while the subject performed each exercise, and the image captured by one webcam was transmitted to the evaluators through a video conferencing application, and eight raters evaluated the mobility, stability, and symmetry of the movement. The result was then compared with the gold standard 3D motion analysis to evaluate the teleassessment system. The concurrent validity of the data obtained using both methods was analyzed. In addition, the inter-rater reliability of the data from the eight raters was evaluated. As a result, mobility showed excellent (ICC > 0.75, ICCs: intraclass correlation coefficients) or good agreement (ICC = 0.6–0.74) with 3D motion analysis and tele-assessment in all motions. The analysis of stability showed high agreement in general, but it was not significant in “cat and cow.” Symmetry showed moderate agreement only in “bridge” and “toe taps”, showing low agreement compared to other components. In addition, the inter-rater reliability of the tele-assessment showed good agreement (ICC = 0.744). Although there were few components with weaker agreements, the results of this study confirmed that it is a valid and reliable method of tele-assessment using video conferencing applications and showed feasibility as an alternative to the existing face-to-face examination.
