The [O ii] λ3727 emission line is a widely used star formation rate (SFR) tracer. However, its application to type I quasars is not straightforward, because the line can be affected by dust extinction, metallicity and contamination from the AGN narrow-line region (NLR). We test the reliability of [O ii] SFRs using a sample of 202 SDSS and PG quasars, by comparing [O ii] SFRs and reference far-infrared (FIR) SFRs derived from multiwavelength SED decomposition. We measure [O ii], [O iii], and narrow Balmer emission lines by spectral fitting. Then, we calculate [O ii] SFRs after correcting dust extinction and metallicity. We then compare these SFRs with the FIR SFRs, both with and without subtracting the AGN contribution estimated from [O iii]. After this correction, the median offset between [O ii] and FIR SFRs is 0.20±0.72 dex for the full analysis sample and 0.17±0.69 dex for sources with S/N > 5 in both [O ii] and [O iii]. Without subtracting the AGN contribution, the corresponding offsets are 0.00±0.69 and 0.12±0.66 dex. We conclude that [O ii] is useful as a statistical SFR tracer for quasar host galaxies, but individual objects still require careful treatment of AGN contamination, extinction, metallicity, aperture effects, and redshift-dependent systematics. Spatially resolved absolute intensities of the atomic lines Hα, Hβ, Hγ, and Hδ have been measured and analyzed in pure hydrogen plasma in the linear plasma device PSI-2. Two regimes have been investigated, with nominal (0.04 Pa) and elevated (0.5 Pa) gas pressure in the sample chamber. The measurements have been compared with local 0D calculations taking into account radiation from H(n=1), H2, and H2+ channels. A baseline plasma chemical mechanism developed in magnetic fusion research was applied to calculate the H2+ density. Both the plasma chemical mechanism and the population factors applied are based on Sawada–Fujimoto collision-radiative model of atomic and molecular hydrogen. The calculations were found to reproduce both the absolute radiation and the line radiation intensity ratios measured in the 0.04 Pa experiment with electron temperature Te = 2–10 eV and electron density ∼5 × 1017 m−3. An exception is the Hα/Hγ intensity ratio, which tends to be overestimated by the model. The calculations suggest that the majority of the observed Balmer radiation in this regime is due to the H2+ channel. At the same time, both the applied simplified approach without detailed transport modeling and the baseline mechanism were found to be inappropriate for the 0.5 Pa experiment with reduced Te = 1–5 eV. This experimental regime can serve as a benchmark of more sophisticated hydrogen plasma models. Full article

Based on low-resolution OSIRIS/GTC optical spectra, we assign spectral classes to 38 poorly studied ultracool/brown dwarf candidates from the 2MASS database. For almost all of the targets, this is the first optical spectral classification. For the dwarfs showing Hα emission, we calculate the ratio of Hα to bolometric luminosity, which is the most common characteristic of magnetic activity in cool stars. For the others, we give 3σ upper limits. We also include estimates of the effective temperatures and log g and distances from Gaia based on a comparison with models. For one of our targets—LSR J2105+2514, previously classified as a dwarf carbon star—we confirm this classification and report Hα and Hβ line emission in the spectrum for the first time. Dwarf carbon stars (dC) are low-mass main sequence stars that have undergone mass-transfer binary evolution. The Balmer line emission from these objects most likely indicates coronal activity of the dwarf, which in turn may be due to either intrinsic magnetic activity or spin-up from accretion or tidal locking. Supermassive binary black holes (SMBBHs) are the anticipated byproducts of galaxy mergers and play a pivotal role in shaping galaxy evolution, gravitational wave emissions, and accretion physics. Despite their theoretical prevalence, direct observational evidence for SMBBHs remains elusive, with only a handful of candidates identified to date. This paper explores optimal strategies and key environments for locating SMBBHs, focusing on observational signatures in the broad Balmer lines. We present a preliminary analysis on a flux-limited sample of sources belonging to an evolved spectral type along the quasar main sequence, and we discuss the spectroscopic clues indicative of binary activity and highlight the critical role of time-domain spectroscopic surveys in uncovering periodic variability linked to binary systems. The effects of the helical trajectories of the perturbing electrons in magnetized plasmas on the dynamical Stark width of hydrogen or deuterium spectral lines have been studied analytically in our previous two papers—specifically in the situation where the magnetic field B is so strong that the dynamical Stark width of these lines reduces to the so-called adiabatic Stark width because the so-called nonadiabatic Stark width is completely suppressed. This situation corresponds, for example, to DA and DBA white dwarfs. We obtained those analytical results by using the formalism of the so-called conventional (or standard) theory of the impact Stark broadening: namely, by performing calculations in the second order of the Dyson perturbation expansion. The primary outcome was that the dynamical Stark broadening was found to not depend on the magnetic field B (for sufficiently strong B). In the present paper, we use the O4 symmetry of hydrogen atoms for performing the corresponding non-perturbative analytical calculations equivalent to accounting for all orders of the Dyson perturbation expansion. The results, obtained by using the O4 symmetry of hydrogen atoms, differ from our previous ones not only quantitatively, but—most importantly—qualitatively. Namely, the dynamical Stark broadening does depend on the magnetic field B, even for strong B. These results should be important for revising the interpretation of the hydrogen Balmer lines observed in DA and DBA white dwarfs. We also address confusion in the literature on this subject. A Q-switched Nd:YAG laser was focused on the Pb–Ti alloy samples in several laser-induced breakdown experiments in order to measure the Stark parameters of several spectral lines (58) of singly ionized titanium, including the 3504.89 Å and 3510.83 Å lines (where we achieved new experimental and theoretical values). The diagnostics of the laser-induced plasmas (electron density and electron temperature) were performed using Balmer’s H alpha line (6562.7 Å). The temperatures were obtained by the Boltzmann plot technique with spectral lines of Pb I (after correction for its evident self-absorption). Subsequently, the calculations by the Griem approach of the Stark broadening parameters for several spectral lines were performed using the Gaunt factors proposed by van Regemorter and those proposed by Douglas H. Sampson. In the latter case, the values obtained were very close to the experimental values. This enables us to assume that the calculations performed for the spectral lines of Ti II, without experimental information, are more accurate using the Gaunt factors proposed by Sampson. The 4D (four-dimensional) eigenvector 1 (E1) sequence has proven to be a highly effective tool for organizing observational and physical properties of type-1 active galactic nuclei (AGNs). In this paper, we present multiple measurements of metallicity for the broad line region gas, from new and previously-published data. We demonstrate a consistent trend along the optical plane of the E1 (also known as the quasar main sequence), defined by the line width of Balmer hydrogen Hβ profile and by a parameter measuring the prominence of singly-ionized iron emission. The trend involves an increase from sub-solar metallicity in correspondence with extreme Population B (weak Feii emission, large Hβ FWHM (full width at half maximum)) to metallicity several tens the solar value in correspondence with extreme Population A (strongest Feii optical emission, narrower Hβ profiles). The data establish the metallicity as a correlate of the 4DE1/main sequence. If the considerably high metallicity (Z10Z, solar metallicity) gas is expelled from the sphere of influence of the central black hole, as indicated by the widespread evidence of nuclear outflows and disk wind in the case of sources radiating at a high Eddington ratio, then it is possible that the outflows from quasars played a role in chemically enriching the host galaxy. We have recently incorporated the occupation probability formalism (OPF) in the simulation model [C. Stehlé and S. Jacquemot, Astron. Astrophys. 271, 348 (1993)] to have a smooth transition from discrete lines to continuum spectrum in the wavelength range near the Balmer series limit. We have analyzed spectra measured for the hydrogen pellet ablation cloud in the Large Helical Device with the revised model, and have found that the electron density in the ablation cloud has a close correlation with the electron temperature of the background plasma. This type of correlation is first confirmed in the present analysis and should give a new insight in the simulation studies of pellet ablation for the magnetically confined fusion plasma. Properties of the broad line region (BLR) in active galactic nuclei (AGNs) are commonly used to estimate the mass of the supermassive black hole (SMBH) that powers an AGN. However, the understanding of the physics behind the BLR remains incomplete. The AGNs exhibit strong optical variability, observed in the change of the profiles and fluxes of broad emission lines. Utilizing this variability provides an opportunity to constrain the physics of the BLR, and understand the interplay of the BLR with SMBH and surrounding regions. Here, we present the long-term monitoring campaign of a sample of the known broad-line AGNs (identified as LoTerm AGN). The aim of this study is to show the importance of sustained and dedicated campaigns that continually collect spectroscopic data of the known AGNs over extended timescales, providing unique insight into the origin and structure of the BLR. LoTerm AGN is a collaborative network of seven moderate-size telescopes equipped for spectroscopy. We focus on the recent spectral data of the known changing-look AGN, NGC 3516. Specifically, we examine the broad hydrogen Balmer Hα line observed in the period 2020–2023, demonstrating that this AGN remains active with the BLR signatures observed in the spectra. No significant change in the broad line profile of Hα line is observed during this recent period. Full article

It has been recently suggested that white dwarf diagnostics could be in error and should be revised because of the effect of the magnetic field on spiralling trajectories of the plasma particles (mainly electrons), predicting a dramatic width increase for high densities of Balmer-β and especially for the δ and ϵ lines. These suggestions overlook important physics and are shown here to be incorrect. Specifically, exact calculations are carried out that can assess the importance of various physical effects neglected in the erroneous analysis mentioned. The net result of accounting for spiralling electron trajectories is typically a small to modest reduction in the line widths, at least for the parameters considered. Full article

The distinct behaviors of blue- and redshifted broad emission-line shifts, emitted by ionic species with varying ionization potentials in active galactic nuclei (AGN), can be elucidated by considering the balance between radiation and gravitational forces along the quasar main sequence. Blueshifts are attributed to outflowing motions of the line-emitting gas toward the observer, and they are most pronounced in AGN with high Eddington ratios (Population A) and high luminosities. Conversely, redshifts in the broad-line wings are observed in Balmer emission lines of sources radiating at low Eddington ratios (Population B), though the origin of these redshifts remains a subject of ongoing debate. A correlation linking the redward asymmetry as measured by the centroid shift of the Hβ line profile to the black hole mass lends support to the notion that these shifts arise from gravitational and transverse redshift effects, particularly for black hole masses MBH108.7 M. We obtained spectroscopy data for 761 Degenerate A (DA)white dwarfs (WDs) with multiple LAMOST observations. The radial velocity (RV) of each spectrum was calculated using the cross-correlation function method (CCF), and 60 DA WD binary candidates were selected based on the variation of the RV. Then, the atmosphere parameter Teff, logg, and the mass of these DA WDs were estimated by the Balmer line fitting method and interpolation in theoretical evolution tracks, respectively. Our parameters are consistent with those from SDSS and Gaia for the common stars. No evident difference in the mass distribution of binary candidates compared with total DA WDs was found. We surmise these DA WD binary candidates are mainly composed of two WDs. With the Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF) data, we obtained the light curve periods of two targets with significant light curve periods in the DA WD binary candidates. For the spectra with anomalous CCF curves or with large errors in their RV calculations, we re-certified their spectral types by visual review. Based on their spectral features, we found 11 DA + M-type binaries and four cataclysmic variables (CVs). The light curve period of one CV was obtained with ZTF data. Full article

Ta2O5 coatings were created using micro-arc discharges (MDs) during anodization on a tantalum substrate in a sodium phosphate electrolyte (10 g/L Na3PO4·10H2O). During the process, the size of MDs increases while the number of MDs decreases. The elements and their ionization states present in MDs were identified using optical emission spectroscopy. The hydrogen Balmer line Hβ shape analysis revealed the presence of two types of MDs, with estimated electron number densities of around 1.1 × 1021 m−3 and 7.3 × 1021 m−3. The effect of MDs duration on surface morphology, phase and chemical composition, optical absorption, and photoluminescent, properties of Ta2O5 coatings, as well as their applications in photocatalytic degradation of methyl orange, were investigated. The created coatings were crystalline and were primarily composed of Ta2O5 orthorhombic phase. Since Ta2O5 coatings feature strong absorption in the ultraviolet light region below 320 nm, their photocatalytic activity is very high and increases with the time of the MDs process. This was associated with an increase of oxygen vacancy defects in coatings formed during the MDs, which was confirmed by photoluminescent measurements. The photocatalytic activity after 8 h of irradiation was around 69%, 74%, 80%, and 88% for Ta2O5 coatings created after 3 min, 5 min, 10 min, and 15 min, respectively. Full article

Inductively coupled plasma with an argon/hydrogen (Ar/H2) mixture is a potential solution to many surface treatment problems, especially when encountering carbon contamination in optical X-ray and extreme ultraviolet instruments. Removing carbon contamination on multilayer thin films with Ar/H2 plasma extends the lifetime of the above devices. To further investigate the reaction between plasma and carbon, both optical emission spectroscopy and finite element method with multiphysics fields were employed. The results demonstrated that the intensities of the Balmer lines were in good agreement with the densities of the radical hydrogen atoms from the simulation model, showing a dependence on the mixing ratio. At an electrical input power of 165 W and a total pressure of 5 Pa, an optimum mixing ratio of about 35 ± 5 % hydrogen produced the highest density of hydrogen radicals, coinciding with the highest carbon removal rate. This shows that the carbon removal with Ar/H2 plasma was mainly controlled by the density of hydrogen radicals, and the mixing ratio showed a significant impact on the removal rates. Full article
