Understanding the spatial dynamics and drivers of armed conflict is crucial for anticipating risk and informing targeted interventions. However, current research rarely considers the spatio-temporal clustering characteristics of armed conflicts. Here, we assess the distribution dynamics and driving factors of armed conflict from the perspective of armed conflict clusters, employing complex network dynamic community detection methods and interpretable machine learning approaches. The results show that conflict clusters vary in terms of regional distribution. Sub-Saharan Africa boasts the highest number of conflict clusters, accounting for 37.9% of the global total and covering 40.4% of the total cluster area. In contrast, South Asia and Afghanistan, despite having a smaller proportion of clusters at 12.1%, hold the second-largest cluster area, which is 18.1% of the total. The characteristics of different conflict networks are influenced by different factors. Historical exposure, socio-economic deprivation, and spatial structure are the primary determinants of conflict patterns, while climatic variables contribute less prominently as part of a broader system of environmental vulnerability. Moreover, the influence of driving factors shows spatial heterogeneity. By integrating cluster-level analysis with interpretable machine learning, this study offers a novel perspective for understanding the multidimensional characteristics of armed conflicts. Fruit flies that belong to the genus Zeugodacus (Diptera: Tephritidae) pose significant threats as invasive pests of agricultural crops in Asia and sub-Saharan Africa. The intensification of transboundary trade in fresh horticultural produce has increased the risk of introducing invasive species such as fruit flies, more so through the inadvertent transport of their immature developmental stages. Such immature stages of fruit flies belonging to the Tephritidae family are frequently intercepted at the international borders worldwide and are unable to be identified to the species level using morphological characteristics. Molecular identification using mitochondrial Cytochrome Oxidase I (COI) gene has proven to be quite useful, as they are not constrained by developmental stages, sex, or colour morphs of the pest species in question. Also, real-time PCR-based species-specific assays offer quicker turnaround time since they do not require any post-PCR procedures. This study evaluated the utility of a real-time PCR assay based on the COI gene region to identify Zeugodacus cucurbitae from other Tephritid species. The developed real-time PCR assay provides a swift and precise way of discriminating between these highly invasive pest species during an interception event for rapid decision making. High specificity, having no cross-reactions with closely related Tephritids, and sensitivity of the developed assay will be extremely useful in discriminating Z. cucurbitae from other closely related fruit fly species. Z. cucurbitae-specific real-time PCR developed in this study is appropriate for organizations that carry out routine diagnostics to facilitate fresh produce imports and exports. Our assay is fully optimized for rapid deployment at international borders, offering reliable detection of the target species regardless of developmental stage, sex, or geographic origins. Crimean–Congo hemorrhagic fever (CCHF) is a zoonotic viral disease endemic to parts of Africa, Asia and southeastern Europe. Bulgaria is one of the few European countries with the consistent annual reporting of human CCHF cases. This study provides a descriptive overview of 24 confirmed CCHF cases in Bulgaria between 2015 and 2024. Laboratory confirmation was performed by an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and/or real-time reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR) testing. Common findings included fever, fatigue, gastrointestinal symptoms, thrombocytopenia, leukopenia, liver dysfunction and coagulopathy. Two fatal cases were recorded. Two samples collected in 2016 and 2024 were subjected to whole-genome sequencing. Phylogenetic analysis showed that both strains clustered within the Turkish branch of the Europe 1 genotype and shared high genetic similarity with previous Bulgarian strains, as well as strains from neighboring countries. These findings suggest the long-term persistence of a genetically stable viral lineage in the region. Continuous molecular and clinical surveillance is necessary to monitor the evolution and public health impact of CCHFV in endemic areas. Full article

Rabies remains a significant global public health concern, causing an estimated 59,000–69,000 human fatalities annually. Despite being entirely preventable through vaccination, rabies continues to impose substantial economic burdens worldwide. This study presents a scoping review of the economic research on rabies to determine overlaps and gaps in knowledge and inform future research strategies. We selected 150 studies (1973–2024) to analyze. The review categorizes the literature based on geographic distribution, species focus, and type of study. Findings indicate that economic studies are disproportionately concentrated in developed countries, such as the United States and parts of Europe, where rabies risk is low, while high-risk regions, particularly in Africa and Asia, remain underrepresented. Most studies focus on dog-mediated rabies, reflecting its dominant role in human transmission, while fewer studies assess the economic impacts of wildlife and livestock-mediated rabies. Case studies and modeling approaches dominate the literature, whereas cost–benefit and cost–effectiveness analyses—critical for informing resource allocation—are limited. The review highlights the need for more economic evaluations in rabies-endemic regions, expanded research on non-dog reservoirs, and broader use of economic methods. Addressing these gaps will be crucial for optimizing rabies control and supporting global initiatives to eliminate dog-mediated rabies by 2030. Full article

Pantoea stewartii subsp. stewartii (Pss) is a Gram-negative bacterium first documented in North America, and is the causal agent of Stewart’s disease in maize (Zea mays), especially in sweet corn. First identified in North America, it is primarily spread by insect vectors like the corn flea beetle (Chaetocnema Pulicaria) in the United States. However, Pss has since spread globally—reaching parts of Africa, Asia, the Americas, and Europe—mainly through the international seed trade. Although this trade is limited, it has still facilitated the pathogen’s global movement, as evidenced by numerous phytosanitary interceptions. Recent studies in Italy, as indicated in the EFSA journal, reported that potential alternative vectors were identified, including Phyllotreta spp. and the invasive Asian brown marmorated stink bug (Halyomorpha halys); the latter tested positive in PCR screenings, raising concerns due to its broad host range and global distribution. This information has prompted studies to verify the ability of Halyomorpha halys to vector Pss to assess the risk and prevent the further spread of Pss in Europe. In this study, we explored the potential transmission of Pss by the brown marmorated stink bugs in maize plants, following its feeding on Pss-inoculated maize, as well as the presence of Pss within the insect’s body. Cystic echinococcosis is a zoonosis caused by the cestode Echinococcus granulosus sensu stricto. Population genetic studies and phylogeographic patterns are essential to understanding the transmission dynamics of this parasite under varying environmental conditions. In this study, the genetic diversity of E. granulosus s.s. was evaluated using 46 hydatid cyst samples obtained from sheep, goats, cattle, and humans across three regions of Chile: Coquimbo, La Araucanía, and Magallanes. Mitochondrial cox1 gene sequences were analyzed and compared with reference sequences reported from South America, Europe, Africa, Asia, and Oceania. In Chile, the EG01 haplotype was the predominant haplotype. A total of four haplotypes were identified, with low haplotype diversity (Hd = 0.461 ± 0.00637) and low nucleotide diversity (π = 0.00181 ± 0.00036). The haplotype network displayed a star-like configuration, with the EG01 genotype at the center, suggesting a potentially ancestral or widely distributed lineage. In Coquimbo (Tajima’s D = −0.93302, p = 0.061; Fu’s Fs = −0.003, p = 0.502) and Magallanes (Tajima’s D = −0.17406, p = 0.386; Fu’s Fs = −0.121, p = 0.414), both neutrality tests were non-significant, indicating no strong evidence for recent population expansion or selection. Star-like haplotype network patterns were also observed in populations from Europe, the Middle East, Asia, Africa, and Oceania, with the EG01 genotype occupying the central position. The population genetic structure of Echinococcus granulosus s.s. in Chile demonstrates considerable complexity, with EG01 as the predominant haplotype. Further comprehensive studies are required to assess the intraspecific genetic variability of E. granulosus s.s. throughout Chile and to determine whether this variability influences the key biological traits of the parasite. This structure may prove even more complex when longer fragments are analyzed, which could allow for the detection of finer-scale microdiversity among isolates from different hosts. We recommended that future cystic echinococcosis control programs take into account the genetic variability of E. granulosus s.s. strains circulating in each endemic region, to better understand their epidemiological, immunological, and possibly pathological differences. Non-polio enteroviruses continue to cause numerous epidemics world-wide that range from mild to severe disease, including acute flaccid paralysis, meningitis, severe respiratory infections and encephalitis. Using publicly available data we present a comprehensive global and regional temporal distribution of non-polio enteroviruses, with a focus on highly prevalent genotypes. We found that regional distribution did vary compared to global prevalence where the top prevalent genotypes included CVA6 and EV-A71 in Asia, EV-D68 in North America and CVA13 in Africa, while E-30 was prevalent in Europe, South America and Oceania. In 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic did interrupt non-polio enterovirus detections globally, and cases rebounded in subsequent years, albeit at lower prevalence and with decreased genotype diversity. Environmental surveillance for non-polio enteroviruses does occur and has been used in some regions as an early-warning system; however, further development is needed to effectively supplement potential gaps in clinical surveillance data. Overall, monitoring for non-polio enteroviruses is critical to identify true incidence, improve understanding of genotype circulation, provide an early warning system for emerging/re-emerging genotypes and allow for better outbreak control. Cancer disparities in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) arise from multifaceted interactions between environmental exposures, infectious agents, and systemic inequities, such as limited access to care. The exposome, a framework encompassing the totality of non-genetic exposures throughout life, offers a powerful lens for understanding these disparities. In LMICs, populations are disproportionately affected by air and water pollution, occupational hazards, and oncogenic infections, including human papillomavirus (HPV), hepatitis B virus (HBV), Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori), human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), and neglected tropical diseases, such as schistosomiasis. These infectious agents contribute to increased cancer susceptibility and poor outcomes, particularly in immunocompromised individuals. Moreover, climate change, food insecurity, and barriers to healthcare access exacerbate these risks. This review adopts a population-level exposome approach to explore how environmental and infectious exposures intersect with genetic, epigenetic, and immune mechanisms to influence cancer incidence and progression in LMICs. We highlight the critical pathways linking chronic exposure and inflammation to tumor development and evaluate strategies such as HPV and HBV vaccination, antiretroviral therapy, and environmental regulation. Special attention is given to tools such as exposome-wide association studies (ExWASs), which offer promise for exposure surveillance, early detection, and public health policy. By integrating exposomic insights into national health systems, especially in regions such as sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) and South Asia, LMICs can advance equitable cancer prevention and control strategies. A holistic, exposome-informed strategy is essential for reducing global cancer disparities and improving outcomes in vulnerable populations. Full article

Over the last decade, the scientific community has increasingly focused on forest-based practices for human well-being (FBPW), a term that includes all forest activities (e.g., forest bathing, forest therapy, social outdoor initiatives) important for improving people’s health and emotional status. This paper aims to develop a quantitative literature review on FBPW based on big data analysis (text mining on Scopus title and abstract) and PRISMA evaluation. The two techniques facilitate investigations across different geographic areas (major areas and geographical regions) and allow a focus on various topics. The results of text mining highlight the prominence of publications on FBPW for the improvement of human health in East Asia (e.g., Japan and South Korea). Furthermore, some specific themes developed by the literature for each geographical area emerge: urban green areas, cities, and parks in Africa; sustainable forest management and planning in the Americas; empirical studies on physiological and psychological effects of FBPW in Asia; and forest management and FBPW in Europe. PRISMA indicates a gap in studies focused on the reciprocal influences of forest variables and well-being responses. An investigation of the main physiological indicators applied in the scientific literature for the theme is also developed. The main strengths and weaknesses of the method are discussed, with suggestions for potential future lines of research. Full article

Electronic voting allows people to participate more easily in their country’s electoral events. Nevertheless, its adoption is still far from widespread. In this paper, we provide a detailed survey of the state of adoption worldwide and investigate which socio-economic factors may influence such an adoption. Its usage is wider in North and South America, while remaining considerably lower in Europe and Asia and practically absent in Africa. We distinguish between e-voting, which maintains the traditional polling station structure while adding technological components, and i-voting, which enables remote participation from any location using personal devices. Five factors (country’s surface and population, Gross Domestic Product, Internet Usage, and Democracy Index) are investigated to predict adoption, and an accuracy of over 79% is achieved through a machine learning random forest model. Larger, wealthier, and more democratic countries are typically associated with a larger adoption of internet voting. Full article

An analysis of Albanian Muslims in Italy provides a compelling case study of communities perceived as marginal. Studies of Muslims in Italy tend to focus on the majority and chronologically older groups within the country’s Islamic landscape, particularly those from Asia and Africa. In addition to providing a better understanding of Islam in Italy, a study of the identity and community-building issues of the Albanian community of origin offers many insights into that community’s complexity. Albanians in Italy have a very specific historical and religious heritage; so, analyzing their roots and community-building processes helps us to better understand the development of Islam on the margins of large national organizations and majority groups. This article presents the results of the first national study of Albanian Muslims in Italy. Online interviews and field observations were conducted in 2024 within the Union of Muslim Albanians in Italy (Unione degli Albanesi Musulmani in Italia—UAMI), using the ethnographic method. The Association has fewer members compared with national level organizations. It was founded in 2009 to address specific issues related to the management of Muslim Albanian religious identity. The Association has sought to address the fragmentation of religion and Albanian nationalism, a consequence of a long period of state atheism, and to counter the literalist and radical tendencies in the interpretation of religion that have emerged in Albania since the collapse of the communist regime. In addition to these challenges, the Association has also tackled issues related to the Islamic religion in its local and global dimensions. The analysis of these challenges and the ways to deal with them offers a new framework in the Italian Islamic panorama, despite its marginality. The results of this research point to the emergence of new forms of rooting and belonging characterized by spirituality over orthopraxis. These forms adopt a religious approach open to diversity and pluralism. Full article

Atmospheric warming results in increase in temperatures for the mean, the coldest, and the hottest day of the year, season, or month. Global warming leads to a large increase in the atmospheric water vapor content and to changes in the hydrological cycle, which include an intensification of precipitation extremes. Using the GISS-E2.1 climate model, we present the future changes in the coldest and hottest daily temperatures as well as in extreme precipitation indices (under four main Shared Socioeconomic Pathways (SSPs)). The increase in the wet-day precipitation ranges between 6% and 15% per 1 °C global surface temperature warming. Scaling of the 95th percentile versus the total precipitation showed that the sensitivity for the extreme precipitation to the warming is about 10 times stronger than that for the mean total precipitation. For six precipitation extreme indices (Total Precipitation, R95p, RX5day, R10mm, SDII, and CDD), the histograms of probability density functions become flatter, with reduced peaks and increased spread for the global mean compared to the historical period of 1850–2014. The mean values shift to the right end (toward larger precipitation and intensity). The higher the GHG emission of the SSP scenario, the more significant the increase in the index change. We found an intensification of precipitation over the globe but large uncertainties remained regionally and at different scales, especially for extremes. Over land, there is a strong increase in precipitation for the wettest day in all seasons over the mid and high latitudes of the Northern Hemisphere. There is an enlargement of the drying patterns in the subtropics including over large regions around Mediterranean, southern Africa, and western Eurasia. For the continental averages, the reduction in total precipitation was found for South America, Europe, Africa, and Australia, and there is an increase in total precipitation over North America, Asia, and the continental Russian Arctic. Over the continental Russian Arctic, there is an increase in all precipitation extremes and a consistent decrease in CDD for all SSP scenarios, with the maximum increase of more than 90% for R95p and R10 mm observed under SSP5–8.5. Spodoptera eridania (Stoll, 1781) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) is an important pest with a broad host range and growing relevance due to its high dispersal capacity, recent invasions into Africa and Asia, and documented resistance to biological insecticides. Here, we assessed S. eridania flight phenology and seasonal dynamics in the Florida Panhandle, using pheromone trapping data to evaluate population trends and environmental drivers. Moths were collected year-round, showing consistent patterns across six consecutive years, including two distinct annual flight peaks: an early crop season flight around March, and a more prominent flight peak during September–October. Moth abundance followed a negative quadratic relationship with temperature, with peak activity occurring between 15 °C and 26 °C. No significant relationship was found with precipitation or wind. These results underscore the strong influence of abiotic factors, particularly temperature, on seasonal abundance patterns of this species. Our findings offer key insights by identifying predictable periods of high pest pressure and the environmental conditions that drive population increases. Understanding the flight phenology and behavior of this species provides an ultimate contribution to the development of effective IPM and insect resistance management (IRM) programs, promoting the development of forecasting tools for more effective, timely pest management interventions. The Crimean–Congo hemorrhagic fever virus (CCHFV) is a single-stranded, segmented RNA virus belonging to the Nairoviridae family, and it is rapidly expanding across Africa, Asia, and southern Europe, probably favored by climate change and livestock trade. Its fatality rate in humans reaches up to 40%, and there is currently no specific treatment or vaccine available. Therefore, the development of therapies against CCHFV is essential, and their design requires understanding of the molecular evolution and genetic distribution of the virus. Motivated by these concerns, we present a comprehensive review of the molecular evolution, genetic characterization, and phylogeography of CCHFV, and we discuss their potential implications for therapeutic design. Specifically, we describe the virus’s capacity to increase its genetic diversity through numerous mutations, recombination events, and genomic reassortments, which affect fundamental viral functions such as RNA binding, host–virus interactions, viral entry, and polymerase activity. We also assess the presence of temporal heterogeneous rates of evolution and molecular adaptation among CCHFV coding regions, where purifying selection is generally predominant but diversifying selection is observed in molecular regions associated with host adaptation and transmission. We emphasize the importance of understanding the complex molecular evolution of CCHFV for the rational design of therapies and highlight the need for efforts in surveillance, evolutionary prediction, and therapeutic development. Renewable energy communities (RECs) are increasingly recognized as pivotal instruments in the global energy transition, offering decentralized, participatory, and sustainable solutions for energy management, specifically regarding energy production and consumption. The present review provides a comprehensive examination of the REC concept, tracing its regulatory evolution, particularly within the European Union through the renewable energy directives (RED II and RED III) and by analyzing its practical implementation across various countries. This paper explores the diverse technologies integrated into REC projects, such as photovoltaic systems, wind turbines, biogas, hydroelectric, and storage solutions, while also considering the socioeconomic frameworks, management models, and local engagement strategies that underpin their success. Key case studies from Europe, Asia, Africa, and Australia illustrate the various approaches, challenges, and outcomes of REC initiatives in different geographic and policy contexts. The analysis also highlights barriers to implementing RECs, including regulatory uncertainty and market integration issues, and identifies the best practices and policies that support REC scalability. By synthesizing current trends and lessons learned, this review aims to inform policymakers, researchers, and practitioners about the transformative role of RECs in achieving decarbonization goals and accomplishing resilient energy systems.
