Cordulegaster heros is an endemic species for Central and Southeastern Europe and one of the species protected under the European Union’s Habitats Directive. To adequately protect this species and its habitats, it is of crucial importance to have detailed information on its distribution, habitat requirements and potential threats to its survival. The main aims of this study were to record Cordulegaster heros geographical and altitudinal distribution and habitat requirements (stream width, fine substrate content and habitat shading), along with the importance of protected area network in its conservation and threats to its habitats in Croatia. To achieve those aims, we investigated 201 perennial and intermittent streams across three biogeographical regions (Continental, Alpine, Mediterranean). Additionally, in a small-scale study conducted in streams located within a protected area, we assessed the species’ relationship with water quality. According to the current results, Cordulegaster heros was confirmed to reproduce in 44 perennial streams in the Continental and Alpine regions, with a significantly higher number of sites and species’ abundance recorded in the Continental region. As the species was not recorded in the Mediterranean region, its occurrence there remains unverified. The species occurred at an altitudinal range between 150 and 665 m a.s.l., with 77% of the sites being between 150 and 350 m a.s.l. It was mostly documented in streams with widths up to 250 cm, fine sediment content up to 30%, and high habitat shading (>75%). A small-scale assessment of its relationship with water parameters within a protected area revealed a significant correlation with higher concentration of oxygen and lower conductivity, confirming its requirements for clean and well-oxygenated habitats. Approximately 57% of the sites where this species was recorded are within the protected area network. However, because most known occurrences are concentrated within only one area, the Continental region, along with the rather low population densities and anthropogenic threats (e.g., deforestation, hydro-morphological alterations) present at 43% of those streams, further monitoring activities are necessary. The presented results provide a basis for further monitoring of Cordulegaster heros and its habitats in Croatia. Full article

Odonata constitute an important invertebrate group that is strongly dependent on water conditions and sensitive to habitat disturbances, rendering them reliable indicators of habitat quality of both aquatic and terrestrial habitats. We studied the compositional and diversity patterns of Odonates in total, and separately for the two suborders (Zygoptera, Anisoptera) in relation to geographic and ecological parameters at the riparian zone of four rivers and one canal within the Axios Delta National Park and the Natura 2000 SAC GR1220002 in northern Greece, using the line transect technique. In total, 6252 individuals belonging to 28 species were identified. The compositional and diversity patterns were significantly different between agricultural and natural sites. Odonata assemblages at croplands were comparatively poorer, dominated by a few, widely distributed, taxonomically proximal species, tolerant to environmental changes, as a result of modifications and consequent alterations of abiotic conditions at croplands, which also led to higher local contribution to β-diversity and species turnover. The absence of several percher, endophytic, and threatened species from agricultural sites led to significantly lower diversity, as a result of environmental filtering due to ecophysiological restrictions. Taxonomic and functional diversity, uniqueness, and Dragonfly Biotic Index (DBI) were significantly higher in riparian forests, due to the sensitivity of damselflies to dehydration, and the avoidance of habitat loss and extreme temperatures by dragonflies, which prefer natural shelters near the ecotone. The newly introduced Conservation Value Index (CVI) revealed 21 conservation hotspots of Odonata (14 at canopy cover sites), widely distributed within the borders of NATURA 2000 SAC GR1220002. Logs supplied in Papua New Guinea and Indonesia are predominantly sourced from fast-growing tree species of plantation forests. The timber primarily consists of sapwood, which is highly susceptible to biodeterioration. At a training center, CCA (chromated copper arsenate) is still used for wood preservation, while in the wood industry, ACQ (alkaline copper quaternary) is commonly applied to enhance the service life of timber. In the future, polystyrene impregnation or other non-biocidal treatments could potentially serve this purpose. This study aimed to determine the discoloration and resistance of polystyrene-impregnated and CCA-preserved woods. Wood samples, Anisoptera thurifera and Octomeles sumatrana from Papua New Guinea, and Anthocephalus cadamba and Falcataria moluccana from Indonesia, were used. The wood samples were treated with polystyrene impregnation, CCA preservation, or left untreated, then exposed at the PNG Forest Research Institute site for four months. After treatment, the color change in polystyrene-impregnated wood was minor, whereas CCA-preserved wood exhibited a noticeably different color compared to untreated wood. The average polymer loading for polystyrene-impregnated wood reached 147%, while the average CCA retention was 8.4 kg/m3. Densities of untreated-, polystyrene-, and CCA-wood were 0.42, 0.64, and 0.45 g/cm3, respectively, and moisture contents were 15.8%, 9.4%, and 13.4%, respectively. CCA preservation proved highly effective in preventing termite attacks; however, CCA is hazardous to living organisms, including humans. Polystyrene impregnation also significantly improved wood resistance to subterranean termites, as indicated by lower weight loss and a higher protection level compared to untreated wood. Additionally, polystyrene treatment is nonhazardous and safe for living organisms, making it a promising option for enhancing wood resistance to termite attacks in the future as an alternative to the biocides currently in use. This study aimed to elucidate the mitochondrial genome organization of Chlorogomphus papilio and the phylogenetic relationships of Chlorogomphidae. We used the Illumina MiSeq sequencing platform to sequence the mitochondrial genome of C. papilio, which was subsequently assembled, annotated, and analyzed. Bayesian inference, maximum likelihood, and maximum parsimony methods were employed to construct the mitochondrial phylogenetic tree of 25 species of Chlorogomphidae based on 16S rRNA and cox1 genes. We observed that the mitochondrial genome of C. papilio is 15,251 bp in length and includes 13 protein-coding genes (PCGs), 22 tRNA genes, 2 rRNA genes, and a non-coding control region. All PCGs start with a typical ATN codon. While cox1, cox2, cox3, and nad5 end with an incomplete termination codon (T), the remaining PCGs terminate with TAG. The secondary structure of the 22 tRNAs showed that only the trnS1 gene lacked the dihydrouracil arm (DHU arm), whereas the rest formed a typical cloverleaf structure. Additionally, 32 G-U mismatches were observed in the secondary structure. Phylogenetic analyses indicated that C. papilio and C. magnificus are sister species. Divergence time analyses indicated that Chlorogomphidae originated around 111.04 Ma, with C. papilio diverging from the common ancestor shared with C. magnificus approximately 58.51 Ma. This divergence is likely linked to the Paleocene–Eocene Thermal Maximum (PETM) and the tectonic uplift of the Himalayas, which created warm, humid habitats and contributed to geographic isolation. This study contributes to a better understanding of the mitochondrial genome and phylogeny of C. papilio, providing valuable molecular markers for further genetic studies. Full article

The study of specimens collected during the night at a lamp allowed for the description of one new genus Phanreticula n. gen., and six new species, namely Phanreticula fenestrata n. sp., Habrocomes piotri n. sp., Conocephalus (Anisoptera) mollyae n. sp., Phlaurocentrum armatum n. sp., Tetraconcha danielae n. sp., and Tetraconcha fuscopunctata n. sp. Further, females of Paraeulioptera emitflesti Massa, 2020 (known only from the male sex) have been collected and characteristics of its ovipositor allowed for the inclusion of this species in the tribe Catoptropterigini. In addition, Pleothrix conradti (Bolívar, 1906) has been rediscovered after 118 years from its description from material collected in Cameroon, and the male of Griffinipteryx mukonja (Griffini, 1908), known only from three females collected in Cameroon in 1800s, is described for the first time. Finally, an updating of the species belonging to the genus Tetraconcha Karsch, 1890 has been carried out; presently, 24 species are known, including 2 other new species from the Ivory Coast (west tropical Africa), Tetraconcha alberti n. sp., and Tetraconcha tonkouiensis n. sp. Deforestation in the tropics causes shifts in adult odonate community structure, from forests dominated by thermoconforming zygopteran specialists to open areas with higher representations of heliothermic anisopterans. We tested for these shifts in the Maquina and Cuecha rivers in Monteverde, Costa Rica. We compared adult odonate communities in 100 m plots (subdivided into twenty 5 m subplots) located in disturbed, partially open areas with those in 100 m plots located in intact forest and used general linear models to describe how odonate abundance, species richness, species diversity, and the Anisoptera/Zygoptera ratio varied among plots, subplots, habitat type (disturbed/forested), rivers, and as functions of percent canopy cover and light levels. Plots varied in light levels and percent canopy cover, but there were no significant differences in species richness or diversity. Community composition, however, varied across plots and subplots in NMDS and PERMANOVA analyses, largely as a consequence of the preference of Hetaerina cruentata and Paltothemis lineatipes for high light subplots and H. majuscula for low light subplots. NMDS axes were significantly correlated with percent canopy cover and light level in subplots, and the Anisoptera/Zygoptera ratio correlated with NMDS axes at both the plot and subplot scales, indicating that the relative abundance of anisopterans did increase with increasing light and decreasing canopy cover. Differences among plots and habitats can largely be attributed to species-specific differences in habitat selection at a small spatial scale, causing predicted shifts in the Anisoptera/Zygoptera ratio as dominance shifts from endemic forest species to wide-ranging generalists. This is one of the first studies that confirms these patterns for a cloud forest community. Full article

Our research was focused on determining the geomorphological characteristics of streams, characteristics of sediment in streams, habitat, emergence sites and flight period. Larvae were recorded in 19 streams (altitude of 35–680 m a.s.l.), with an average minimum width of 44.2 cm, an average maximum width of 352.9 cm, an average minimum depth of 9 cm and an average maximum depth (in pools) of 55 cm, with an average stream gradient of 12 grades (range 0.6–45 grades). In terms of grain size, the sediment in these biotopes can be characterized as sandy gravel, medium-grained gravel with an admixture of fine sand and an admixture of coarse-grained gravel prevails (with dominancy of fraction 2–5 mm with a representation of 47%). The larval density reached 0.1–62.2 larvae per 1 m2 of suitable sediment. Exuviae (100 exuviae found in total) occurred at an average of 66 cm horizontal distance from the shore and an average vertical height of 124 cm above the ground. The average total distance of larval movement was 190 cm. The emergence site was categorized as larvae-dominated tree trunks (57% of cases), rocks (51%) and overhanging rocks (11%). The flight period was recorded from 17th May to 15th July (literary record—to 15th August) with peak flight activity noted in the third quarter of June. Considering the size of the area—extent of occurrence, the population of C. buchholzi is strongly threatened; according to the IUCN categories it should be classified as endangered (EN). Full article

Assessing a taxon’s response to change in environmental variables is fundamental knowledge to understanding trends in species diversity, abundance, and distribution patterns. This is particularly needed on Borneo, where knowledge on Odonata populations in different habitats is poor. To address this gap, we present the first study investigating the relationship between morphology and species distribution of Odonata communities in a heath (kerangas)-dominated mixed-mosaic-lowland forest in southern Borneo. We sampled 250-m line transects in three habitat types: mixed peatcswamp, kerangas, and low-pole peatcswamp, with weekly surveys from December 2019 to February 2020. A total of 309 individuals were detected from 25 species. Anisoptera and Zygoptera diversity was the highest in mixed peatcswamp and lowest in low pole, while abundance was the highest in low pole and lowest in kerangas; with kerangas notably harboring a very small sample size. Odonata community assemblages differed most between mixed peat swamp and low pole. Morphological data were compared between suborders and habitats. Anisoptera showed significantly larger thoraces, hindwings, and hindwing-to-body ratio than Zygoptera. Anisoptera in low pole were significantly smaller in body, thorax, and hindwing compared to both kerangas and mixed peat swamp. Anisoptera showed a strong association with pools and Zygoptera with flowing water. Heterogeneity, habitat characteristics, presence of specialists, body size, and the interaction between species’ morphological traits and habitat characteristics likely explained the trends observed. Cordulegaster heros is included in the EN category on the IUCN Red List for the territory of the Czech Republic, where it inhabits an area of approximately 100 km2. All of the localities are located in the forest complex in Chřiby hills, and all of the forests fall into the category of management forests. Most of the forest stands have a high and very high degree of naturalness; they are natural forest stands. The predominant management units are Nutrient sites in middle elevations (78.2% of the area) and Oligotrophic sites in middle elevations (2.1% of the area), with stand types of Fagus sylvatica representing 92.5% of the area, and forest stand types of Quercus sp. representing 5.7% of the area. The wider alluvia in forest streams are classified as being in management unit alder and ash sites on waterlogged and floodplain soils (1.1%), with the forest stand type of Alnus glutinosa. The forest stands are restored by regeneration under shelterwood (97.8% of the area). The waterlogged alluvia, if a separate management unit is established for them, are restored by a regeneration by strip method. Realistically, seven factors were recorded in C. heros habitats, but they mostly have only point effects. Within forestry management, the factors of logging directly in the habitats and the subsequent transport of harvested timber in the habitat were recorded. The most intrusive effects were found on tractor logging roads, where fine soil washes into the stream and causes prolonged turbidity. Of the water management structures in the study area, logging roads with bridges and culverts are constructed, stream banks are reinforced with longitudinal walls at points, and stone steps in the channels are constructed only sporadically. The current forest management system can be described as a nature-friendly system, and therefore, it fully ensures the conditions for the survival of the C. heros population in the Czech Republic. Insects of the order Odonata have been used as indicators of environmental quality in different aquatic systems around the world. In this context, we conducted a bibliometric analysis to understand the general patterns of research on Odonata published in the past decade (2012–2021). We extracted literature from the Web of Science (WoS) in the advanced search option and used search terms related to Odonata plus search strings for each term. A total of 2764 Odonata publications were identified. The journals with the most published articles on Odonata were Zootaxa, International Journal of Odonatology and Odonatologica. The countries with the most Odonata publications were the USA, Brazil and China. Most studies were conducted on streams, ponds and rivers. Ecology, taxonomy and behavior were the main study topics. Of the total articles on Odonata, 982 involved Zygoptera and 946 Anisoptera. Another 756 studies were focused on both suborders. The increase in ecological and taxonomic studies of Odonata reflects the dynamic characteristics of this order, and its relatively well-defined systematics, especially in the case of adults. Despite the recent increase in the number of publications, there are still many gaps related to topics such as biogeography, parasitism, competition within and between species, evolutionary and phylogenetic relationships, as well as studies of the eggs (e.g., their development) and larval exuviae (e.g., their morphological features). Understanding how changes in species richness pattern correlate with range changes in different taxonomic and biogeographic groups is important for conservation because it allows for generalizations about which species are at greatest risk. Here, we assessed whether changes in species richness patterns result from generalized range shifts across taxonomic and biogeographic groups or from changes in specific subsets of species. Using data from 1988 and from 2010, we studied changes in distributional range of European dragonfly species, using outline distribution maps for all dragonflies combined and separately for taxonomic suborders (Zygoptera and Anisoptera) and biogeographic groups (Boreo-alpine, Eurasian, Mediterranean, and Tropical). The results demonstrated differing range dynamics for Zygoptera and Anisoptera, with Anisoptera driving local turnover in species richness to a greater extent than Zygoptera. The distributional range of Tropical and Mediterranean species had expanded to a much greater extent than that of Eurasian and Boreo-alpine species. Large-scale changes in species richness arose from several divergent, group-specific processes. Overall, local diversity especially declined in parts of southern and south-eastern Europe, reflecting local losses in multiple species rather than major range contractions among Mediterranean or Eurasian species. In fact, among the biogeographic groups, overall range declines were most prominent among Boreo-alpine species, highlighting the particular threat from climate change to this group. Full article

More than 1.2 million distribution records were used to create species distribution models for 402 Palaearctic species of dragonflies and damselflies. On the basis of these diversity maps of total, lentic and lotic diversity for the whole of the Palaearctic (excluding China and the Himalayan region) are presented. These maps show a clear pattern of decreasing diversity longitudinally, with species numbers dropping in the eastern half of Europe and remaining low throughout a large part of Russia, then increasing again towards Russia’s Far East and Korea. There are clear differences in diversity patterns of lentic and lotic species, with lentic species being dominant in colder and more arid areas. Areas with a high diversity of species assessed as threatened on the IUCN red list are largely restricted to the Mediterranean, Southwest Asia, and Japan, with clear hotspots found in the Levant and the southern half of Japan. The diversity at species, generic, and family level is higher in the south of Japan than in areas at a similar latitude in the western Mediterranean. This is likely to be the result of the more humid climate of Japan resulting in a higher diversity of freshwater habitats and the stronger impact of the glacial periods in the Western Palaearctic in combination with the Sahara, preventing tropical African lineages dispersing northwards. In the south of Bahia state, a large part of the native Atlantic Forest areas has been modified for the cultivation of cocoa (Theobroma cacao). These crops are cultivated under the shade of the canopy of native trees, a system locally known as the “cabruca” agroforestry system. This study aimed to evaluate the relationship of Odonata assemblages (adults and larvae) in cocoa farming areas and to identify the relationships of these species with local and spatial environmental variables of the monitored sites. Altogether, adult and larvae were sampled at 22 sites. Physical and physicochemical water variables were recorded for each site. A total of 1336 dragonflies were collected, of which 20 were Zygoptera species and 30 were adult Anisoptera representatives. The different life stages were related to environmental variables such as conductivity, watercourse channel width, and dissolved oxygen. The space predictors were also associated with the assemblages, mainly for adults. The present study identified that cabruca areas maintain a great diversity of dragonflies, including species that are considered to be forest specialists and more sensitive to landscape changes. The characteristics of this cropping system are considered to be favorable for the conservation of the biodiversity of the Atlantic Forest. Full article

In most Anisoptera families, the modal diploid number is 25 in males (24 autosomes + X), and the X chromosome is one of the smallest elements of the complement. The family Gomphidae is an exception, as it has a modal diploid number of 23 (22 + X), and the X chromosome is the largest of the complement and of medium-to-large size in many species. We studied the meiosis of three gomphid species from Argentina: Aphylla cf. distinguenda (Campion, 1920), Phyllocycla propinqua Belle, 1972 and Phyllocycla sp. Chromosome number is 2n = 23, n = 11 + X, except for Phyllocycla propinqua, showing n = 10 + X. The X chromosome of these species is medium-sized and presents heteropyknotic blocks of different sizes. Despite the small number of gomphid species analysed, there is a clear trend of increasing size of the X chromosome with the increasing amount of heterochromatin. Our results, together with those from the literature, suggest that its large size might have been due to a progressive accumulation of repetitive DNA and heterochromatinisation and not to fusion, as previously suggested. This led us to propose that the ancestral number coincided with the modal number of Gomphidae. A revision of the derived sex-determining systems in Odonata is also provided. Full article

Population Density and Abundance of the Northernmost Population of Cordulegaster heros (Anisoptera: Cordulegastridae) in Europe (Czech Republic) with Notes on Its Biogeographical Range

Cordulegaster heros is a Balkan species with a disjunctive area extending into Central Europe. The population in the Chřiby Mts. in the southeastern Czech Republic is the northernmost population, and this population was intensively studied from 2010 to 2021 to establish basic data on its abundance. In the territory, the geomorphological characteristics of streams, characteristics of sediment in streams, habitat, emergence time, and period of flight were recorded, and population viability was evaluated. Larvae were recorded in 10 small forest streams (altitude of 235–426 m a.s.l.), with an average minimum width of 51.9 cm, an average maximum width of 177.7 cm, an average minimum depth of 6.5 cm, an average maximum depth (in pools) of 21 cm, and an average stream gradient of 1.9 grades. The sediments in each stream exhibited a grain size distribution with an average fraction less than 0.05 mm represented by 6.3%, a fraction of 0.05–0.1 mm represented by 21.1%, a fraction of 0.1–2 mm represented by 52.1%, a fraction of 2–5 mm represented by 12.1%, a fraction of 5–20 mm represented by 8%, and a fraction of 20+ mm represented by 0.3%. The larval abundance was 0.1–6.7 larvae per 1 m2 of suitable sediment. The emergence period was recorded from 28 May to 1 July. The emergence site was categorized as larvae-dominated plant leave (57% of cases), plant stalks (21%), and tree trunks (17%). Exuviae occurred at an average of 154 cm at horizontal distance from the shore and an average vertical height of 77 cm above the ground. The average total distance of larval movement was 205 cm. The flight period in 2021 was recorded from 15 June to 11 August with peak flight activity noted in the third week of June. The northernmost population of C. heros was evaluated as viable and stable.
