This article rereads Akira Kurosawa’s 1960 film The Bad Sleep Well as a modern Hamlet that relocates Shakespeare’s crisis of action from dynastic succession to postwar bureaucratic and corporate modernity. It shifts attention away from plot fidelity and toward how Hamletian functions—staged revelation, damaged legitimacy, obstructed revenge, and the demand for narrative afterlife—are adopted into a corporate world that delegates authority downward, a reworking the article calls structural-political adaptation. Drawing on Carl Schmitt’s account of sovereignty and the political taboo that gives tragic form its density, it argues that Kurosawa adapts the relation between tragedy and what cannot be directly represented. The film’s highest authority is heard on a telephone and never seen. The power of decision has receded behind a bureaucratic apparatus, where neither the avenger nor the camera can follow it. Death and its consequences change accordingly. Nishi dies without a survivor who can perform Horatio’s public function. The institution records his death as an accident and absorbs it into administrative routine. This article argues that The Bad Sleep Well shows how Hamletian action and death survive under faceless institutional power and are shaped by political taboo. Full article

In this study, we developed and characterized novel scintillators with Ce: LiCaAlF6–CaF2–Li3AlF6 and Ce: CaF2–LiF–Li3AlF6 ternary systems for thermal neutron detectors. The eutectics were grown by the vertical Stochbarger-Bridgman (VB) technique, and their constituent phases were identified using powder X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy. Radioluminescence spectra irradiated under an Ag-target X-ray tube and confirmed the 5d-4f and self-trapped exciton luminescence derived from Ce3+. Scintillation decay and pulse height measurements were performed using 252Cf and 60Co sources. The Ce: CaF2–LiF–Li3AlF6 sample exhibited approximately 5.6 times higher effective neutron sensitivity compared with a Ce: LiCaAlF6 single crystal. A favorable decrease in the neutron discrimination threshold level (Qth) due to reduced γ-ray emission was observed. 6Li-enriched Ce: CaF-based scintillators hold potential for nuclear decommissioning applications. Ce-doped Lu2Si2O7 has a high density, high luminescence efficiency even at high temperatures, and a high effective atomic number, making it a promising candidate for use as a radiation detector in medical devices and resource exploration equipment. In this study, we grow and characterize Pr3+ and Ce3+-doped Lu2Si2O7 single crystals by systematically varying the Ce3+ to Pr3+ ratio to further improve scintillation properties. The optical characterization results show a bidirectional energy transfer: from the Pr3+ 5d levels to the Ce3+ 5d levels and from the Ce3+ 5d levels to the Pr3+ 4f levels. Consistently with this result, the PL decay time of emission from the Pr3+ 5d–4f transition tends to become faster as the Ce3+/Pr3+ ratio increases, due to the energy transfer from the Pr3+ 5d levels to the Ce3+ 5d levels. Additionally, (Ce0.0022 Pr0.0016 Lu0.9962)2Si2O7 exhibits a high light yield comparable to Ce-doped Lu2Si2O7 and a slightly faster decay time than Ce-doped Lu2Si2O7. Full article

Alain Badiou in his philosophy on ethics underscores four fields of truth procedures—love, politics, art, and science—that seek to break with the existing order or conventional flow of things. These four fields indicate both collective (politics, art, and science) as well as individual (love) instances of the subject’s relationships and actions. The individual realm of ‘love’, which is the central focus of this study, however, as a generic, complex category does not clearly explicate the significance of the associated concept, friendship. Akira Kurosawa’s filmography is illustrative as it opens up a possibility for disentangling the concept of friendship from love along with making significant contributions to the ethics of truth, particularly with respect to the “friendship event”. His films vividly capture some of the essential themes of Badiou’s philosophy of truth ethics, including “break”/“encounter”, referred to as ‘event’, “keep going”/“perseverance”, and “fidelity”. Even if the philosophers Badiou and Kurosawa do not make direct references to each other’s works, this research reveals significant parallels between cinephilosophy created through “cine-images” and the written philosophy. By analyzing Kurosawa’s films in the light of Badiou’s philosophy of truth ethics, and vice versa, this study embarks on exploring the complementarities between the works of the two. The study showcases how love and friendship as truth procedures are formed in particular contexts in Kurosawa’s filmography, and how they intersect with other truth events, particularly politics. Most importantly, this study does not view Badiou’s “truth events” such as love, friendship, and politics as mutually exclusive categories; rather, they are seen as complementary in practice. Aluminum garnets display exceptional adaptability in incorporating mismatching elements, thereby facilitating the synthesis of novel materials with tailored properties. This study explored Ce3+-doped Tb3Al5−xScxO12 crystals (where x ranges from 0.5 to 3.0), revealing a novel approach to control luminescence and photoconversion through atomic size mismatch engineering. Raman spectroscopy confirmed the coexistence of garnet and perovskite phases, with Sc substitution significantly influencing the garnet lattice and induced A1g mode softening up to Sc concentration x = 2.0. The Sc atoms controlled sub-eutectic inclusion formation, creating efficient light scattering centers and unveiling a compositional threshold for octahedral site saturation. This modulation enabled the control of energy transfer dynamics between Ce3+ and Tb3+ ions, enhancing luminescence and mitigating quenching. The Sc admixing process regulated luminous efficacy (LE), color rendering index (CRI), and correlated color temperature (CCT), with adjustments in CRI from 68 to 84 and CCT from 3545 K to 12,958 K. The Ce3+-doped Tb3Al5−xScxO12 crystal (where x = 2.0) achieved the highest LE of 114.6 lm/W and emitted light at a CCT of 4942 K, similar to daylight white. This approach enables the design and development of functional materials with tailored optical properties applicable to lighting technology, persistent phosphors, scintillators, and storage phosphors. The 3He gas is commonly used for the detection of thermal neutrons. However, with the depletion of 3He gas, there is a need to develop new solid scintillators for thermal neutron detection. Solid scintillators containing 6Li, which have large neutron capture cross-sections and a large amount of energy released by transmutation reactions, are commonly used as alternative candidates. However, only single-crystal scintillators are currently used, and their 6Li concentration is limited by their chemical composition. In this study, we designed, grew, and evaluated a new eutectic scintillator, Rb2CeCl5/LiCl, which can improve the 6Li concentration compared with single-crystal scintillators. Rb2CeCl5, which was selected as the scintillator phase, has excellent scintillator properties (light yield: 36,000 photons/MeV, decay time: mostly 24 ns, slightly 153 ns), and is less deliquescent than other halide scintillators. The crystal grown using the vertical Bridgman method exhibited a eutectic phase composed of Rb2CeCl5 and LiCl. The eutectic crystals exhibited Ce3+ 5d-4f emissions, with a peak between 360 and 370 nm. The Rb2CeCl5 phase was identified as the luminescent phase via cathodoluminescence mapping, and 16,000 photons/neutron of the light yield and 56.1 ns of the decay time were observed. This study indicates that the Rb2CeCl5/LiCl eutectic scintillator is a promising candidate for use in thermal neutron detectors. Full article

The Western is, in many respects, the essential American film genre, “a cornerstone of American identity” (Kitses). Yet, despite its distinctly American character, the genre has exerted a fascination all over the world. This contribution examines the Western as a site of transnational cultural exchange and as an illustration of what Stephen Greenblatt calls cultural mobility. In the work of Akira Kurosawa’s Seven Samurai (1954) and Yojimbo (1961), Western elements are evoked, which provide complex comments on the influence of American culture on Japan in the post-WWII years. While Seven Samurai appears to embrace the promise of class eradication as a result of Westernization, its American remake The Magnificent Seven (1960) shows a particular fascination for the decidedly Japanese aspects of the material, namely the idea of a warrior class dissociated from society. The Italian remake of Yojimbo, Fistful of Dollars (1964), shows how the Western can function not only as an external comment on American culture, in its cynical redefinition of the cowboy hero, but also as an amalgam of cultural practices and symbols, reaching from Japanese samurai codes to Christian Catholic redeemer imagery, that through their stylization expose the performativity of culture as such. In recent years, thermal neutron detection using scintillators has been used in a wide range of fields. Thus, the development of scintillators with a higher light yield, faster decay, and higher sensitivity for thermal neutrons is required. In this study, K2CeCl5/6LiCl and CeCl3/SrCl2/6LiCl were developed as novel eutectic scintillators for thermal neutron detection. LiCl was selected as the neutron capture phase and K2CeCl5 and CeCl3 were used as the scintillator phases. The eutectics of K2CeCl5/6LiCl and CeCl3/SrCl2/6LiCl were prepared using the Vertical Bridgman method and the phases were identified by scanning electron microscopy and powder X-ray diffraction measurements. The results of radioluminescence measurements under Ag source X-ray tube irradiation confirmed that the 5d-4f emission derived from Ce3+. The cathodoluminescence spectra and thermal neutron responses of the prepared eutectics were measured to evaluate their optical properties. Full article

Capsinoids are some of the most promising ingredients to increase energy expenditure (EE) due to brown adipose tissue (BAT) activation. However, there is limited information regarding the effect of prolonged capsinoid ingestion (CI) on BAT activity and resting EE (REE) in healthy, middle-aged, normal to overweight subjects (Subhealthy) with distinct BAT characteristics. We examined the changes in BAT density (BAT-d), using near-infrared time-resolved spectroscopy, and REE/kg induced by daily CI. Forty Subhealthy [age, 43.8 (mean) years; BMI, 25.4 kg/m2] received either capsinoid (9 mg/day) or a placebo daily for 6 weeks in a double-blind design. Total hemoglobin concentration in the supraclavicular region ([total-Hb]sup), an indicator of BAT-d, and REE/kg were measured. The changes in post-intervention [total-Hb]sup were greater in the capsinoid group (CA-G) than in the placebo group (PL-G) [5.8 µM (+12.4%) versus 1.0 µM (+2.1%); p = 0.017]. There was a significant relationship between BAT-d and REE/kg; however, post-supplementation REE/kg was not significantly different between the two groups (p = 0.228). In the overweight subgroup, changes in REE/kg were greater in the CA-G than in the PL-G [0.6 cal/kg/min (+4.3%) versus −0.3 cal/kg/min (−2.1%); p = 0.021]. CI enhanced [total-Hb]sup, a reflection of BAT-d, showing a good correlation with REE in Subhealthy. Full article

A novel single-crystal growth method was developed, using arc plasma and metal melt, for a quick survey of high melting point materials. Single crystals of Yb-doped Lu2O3, Lu0.388Hf0.612O1.806, and Lu0.18Hf0.82O1.91, with melting points of 2460, 2900, and 2840 °C, respectively, were grown by an indirect heating method using arc plasma. We refer to this indirect heating growth method as the core heating (CH) method. The CH-grown Yb1%-doped Lu2O3 sample showed a full width at half maximum of 286 arcsec in the X-ray rocking curve. This value is better than the 393 arcsec obtained for the crystal grown by the micro-pulling-down (μ-PD) method. The Yb charge transfer state (CTS) emission was observed at 350 nm in the Yb1%-doped Lu2O3 and Lu0.18Hf0.82O1.91. In the case of the μ-PD method, using a rhenium (Re) crucible, absorption due to Re contamination and a resulting reduction in the Yb CTS emission were confirmed. However, contamination did not influence the properties observed in the crystals grown by the CH method. Full article

Ce-doped LaBr3/AEBr2 (AE = Mg, Ca, Sr, Ba) eutectics were grown using the Bridgman–Stockbarger (BS) method in quartz ampoules. The eutectics (AE = Mg and Ca) showed optical transparency like optical fiber bundles. A grown Ce-doped LaBr3/MgBr2 eutectic shows a 355 nm emission ascribed to Ce3+ 4f-5d transition under X-ray excitation. The smaller the ionic size of AE, the higher the light yield of the sample was. The light yield of Ce:LaBr3/MgBr2 was 34,300 photon/MeV, which is higher than Ce:LYSO standard. Scintillation decay time under 662 keV gamma-ray excitation was 18.8 ns. Full article

Boron neutron capture therapy (BNCT) is a unique anticancer technology that has demonstrated its efficacy in numerous phase I/II clinical trials with boronophenylalanine (BPA) and sodium borocaptate (BSH) used as 10B delivery agents. However, continuous drug administration at high concentrations is needed to maintain sufficient 10B concentration within tumors. To address the issue of 10B accumulation and retention in tumor tissue, we developed MMT1242, a novel boron-containing α-d-mannopyranoside. We evaluated the uptake, intracellular distribution, and retention of MMT1242 in cultured cells and analyzed biodistribution, tumor-to-normal tissue ratio and toxicity in vivo. Fluorescence imaging using nitrobenzoxadiazole (NBD)-labeled MMT1242 and inductively coupled mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) were performed. The effectiveness of BNCT using MMT1242 was assessed in animal irradiation studies at the Kyoto University Research Reactor. MMT1242 showed a high uptake and broad intracellular distribution in vitro, longer tumor retention compared to BSH and BPA, and adequate tumor-to-normal tissue accumulation ratio and low toxicity in vivo. A neutron irradiation study with MMT1242 in a subcutaneous murine tumor model revealed a significant tumor inhibiting effect if injected 24 h before irradiation. We therefore report that 10B-MMT1242 is a candidate for further clinical BNCT studies. Full article

Vigorous-Intensity Physical Activities Are Associated with High Brown Adipose Tissue Density in Humans

Brown adipose tissue (BAT) plays a role in adaptive thermogenesis in response to cold environments and dietary intake via sympathetic nervous system (SNS) activation. It is unclear whether physical activity increases BAT density (BAT-d). Two-hundred ninety-eight participants (age: 41.2 ± 12.1 (mean ± standard deviation), height: 163.6 ± 8.3 cm, weight: 60.2 ± 11.0 kg, body mass index (BMI): 22.4 ± 3.0 kg/m2, body fat percentage: 25.4 ± 7.5%) without smoking habits were categorized based on their physical activity levels (a group performing physical activities including walking and moderate physical activity (WM) and a group performing WM + vigorous-intensity physical activities (VWM)). We measured the total hemoglobin concentration ([Total-Hb]) in the supraclavicular region, an index of BAT-d, and anthropometric parameters. [Total-Hb] was significantly higher in VWM than WM for all participant groups presumably owing to SNS activation during vigorous-intensity physical activities, and unrelated to the amount of total physical activity levels. Furthermore, multiple regression analysis revealed that BAT-d was related to visceral fat area and VWM in men and related to body fat percentage in women. We conclude that vigorous-intensity physical activities are associated with high BAT-d in humans, especially in men. Full article

The microstructure and mechanical properties of platinum (Pt) fibers fabricated by unidirectional solidification using the alloy-micro-pulling-down (A-μ-PD) method were investigated using a Universal Testing Machine and Electron Backscattered Diffraction (EBSD). The Pt fiber fabricated at a growth rate of 10 mm/min was composed of relatively large grains with <100> crystal orientation along the growth direction. The crystal orientation was consistent with the easy axis of the crystal growth on the face-centered-cubic (f.c.c.) structure. On the other hand, the adjacent grains of the Pt fiber fabricated at 50 mm/min were randomly oriented owing to a faster growth rate. In tensile tests, the Pt fibers fabricated by the A-μ-PD method indicated extremely different stress–strain curves compared to the commercial Pt wire. The maximum tensile stress of the Pt fiber reached ~100 MPa, and the Pt fiber ruptured after 58% nominal strain. Full article

Co-Cr-Mo alloy fibers of 2 mm in diameter were fabricated from the melt at 1, 2, and 5 mm/min growth rates by unidirectional solidification using an alloy-micro-pulling-down (A-µ-PD) method to control the microstructure. All elements, Co, Cr, and Mo, were distributed in stripes elongated along the growth direction due to constitutional undercooling. Both Co-Cr-Mo fibers fabricated at 2 and 5 mm/min growth rates were composed of the γ phase with a face-centered cubic structure (fcc-γ phase) and ε-phase with a hexagonal close-packed structure (hcp-ε phase), and the ratio of the fcc-γ phase in the fiber fabricated at 5 mm/min growth rate was higher than that in the fiber fabricated at 2 mm/min. The results suggest that a faster growth rate increases the ratio of the fcc-γ phase in the Co-Cr-Mo fiber fabricated by unidirectional solidification. Full article
