Influence of Heat Treatment on Precipitate and Microstructure of 38CrMoAl Steel

To address the central cracking problem in continuous casting slabs of 38CrMoAl steel, high-temperature tensile tests were performed using a Gleeble-3800 thermal simulator to characterize the hot ductility of the steel within the temperature range of 600–1200 °C. The phase transformation behavior was computationally analyzed via the Thermo-Calc software, while the microstructure, fracture morphology, and precipitate characteristics were systematically investigated using a metallographic microscope (MM), a field-emission scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Additionally, the effects of different holding times and cooling rates on the microstructure and precipitates of 38CrMoAl steel were also studied. The results show that the third brittle temperature region of 38CrMoAl steel is 645–1009 °C, and the fracture mechanisms can be classified into three types: (I) in the α single-phase region, the thickness of intergranular proeutectoid ferrite increases with rising temperature, leading to reduced hot ductility; (II) in the γ single-phase region, the average size of precipitates increases while the number density decreases with increasing temperature, thereby improving hot ductility; and (III) in the α + γ two-phase region, the precipitation of proeutectoid ferrite promotes crack propagation and the dense distribution of precipitates at grain boundaries causes stress concentration, further deteriorating hot ductility. Heat treatment experiments indicate that the microstructures of the specimen transformed under water cooling, air cooling, and furnace cooling conditions as follows: martensite + proeutectoid ferrite → bainite + ferrite → ferrite. The average size of precipitates first decreased, then increased, and finally decreased again with increasing holding time, while the number density exhibited the opposite trend. Therefore, when the holding time was the same, reducing the cooling rate could increase the average size of the precipitates and decrease their number density, thereby improving the hot ductility of 38CrMoAl steel. This article presents the results of the tribological performance of 20MnCr5 (1.7147) tool steel countersamples produced by Direct Metal Laser Sintering (DMLS), as a potential material for inserts or working layers of sheet metal forming tools. Tribological tests were performed using a roller-block tribotester. The samples were sheet metals made of materials with significantly different properties: Inconel 625, titanium-stabilised stainless steel 321, EN AW-6061 T0 aluminium alloy, and pure copper. The samples and countersamples were analysed in terms of their wear resistance, coefficient of friction (COF), changes in friction force during testing, and surface morphology after tribological contact under dry friction conditions. The tests were performed on DMLSed countersamples in the as-received state. The largest gain of countersample mass was observed for the 20MnCr5/EN AW-6061 T0 friction pair. The sample mass loss in this combination was also the largest, amounting to 19.96% of the initial mass. On the other hand, in the 20MnCr5/Inconel 625 friction pair, no significant changes in the mass of materials were recorded. For the Inconel 625 sample, a mass loss of 0.04% was observed. The basic wear mechanism of the samples was identified as abrasive wear. The highest friction forces were observed in the 20MnCr5/Cu friction pair (COF = 0.913) and 20MnCr5/EN AW-6061 T0 friction pair (COF = 1.234). The other two samples (Inconel 625, 321 steel) showed a very stable value of the friction force during the roller-block test resulting in a COF between 0.194 and 0.213. Based on the changes in friction force, COFs, and mass changes in friction pair components during wear tests, it can be concluded that potential tools in the form of inserts or working layers manufactured using 3D printing technology, the DMLS method, without additional surface treatment can be successfully used for forming sheets of 321 steel and Inconel 625. This study investigates the hot deformation behaviour and microstructural evolution of two AISI 430 ferritic stainless steel variants: 0A (basic) and 1C (modified). These variants primarily differ in chemical composition, with 0A containing higher austenite-stabilizing elements (C, N) compared to 1C, which features lower interstitial content and slightly higher Si and Cr. This research aimed to optimize hot rolling conditions for enhanced forming properties. Uniaxial hot compression tests were conducted using a Gleeble thermo-mechanical system between 850 and 990 C at a strain rate of 3.3 s1, simulating industrial finishing mill conditions. Analysis of flow curves, coupled with detailed microstructural characterization using electron backscatter diffraction, revealed distinct dynamic restoration mechanisms influencing each material’s response. Thermodynamic simulations confirmed significant austenite formation in both materials within the tested temperature range, notably affecting their deformation behaviour despite their initial ferritic state. Material 0A consistently exhibited a strong tendency towards dynamic recrystallization (DRX) across a wider temperature range, particularly at 850 C. DRX led to a microstructure with a high concentration of low-angle grain boundaries and sharp deformation textures, actively reorienting grains towards energetically favourable configurations. However, under this condition, DRX did not fully complete the recrystallization process. In contrast, material 1C showed greater activity of both dynamic recovery and DRX, leading to a much more advanced state of grain refinement and recrystallization compared to 0A. This indicates that the composition of 1C helps mitigate the strong influence of the deformation temperature on the crystallographic texture, leading to a weaker texture overall than 0A. Full article

Machining chromium–nickel alloy steel is challenging due to its material properties, such as high strength and toughness. These properties often lead to tool damage and degradation of tool life, which overall impacts the production time, cost, and quality of the product. Therefore, it is essential to investigate early signs of tool damage to determine the effective machining conditions for chromium–nickel alloy steel, thereby increasing tool life and improving product quality. In this study, the early signs of tool wear were observed in a physical vapor deposition (PVD) carbide-coated tool (Seco Tools, Björnbacksvägen, Sweden) during the machining of X5CrNi18-10 steel under both dry and wet conditions. A finish turning operation was performed on the outer diameter (OD) of the workpiece with a 0.4 mm nose radius tool. At the early stage, the tool was examined from the functional side (f–side) and the passive side (p–side). The results indicate that dry machining leads to increased coating removal, more heat generation, and visible damage, such as pits and surface scratches. By comparison, wet machining helps reduce heat and wear, thereby improving tool life and machining quality. These findings suggest that a coolant must be used when machining chromium–nickel alloy steel with a PVD carbide-coated tool. Full article

Chromium–aluminum nitride (CrAlN) coatings were deposited on polished H13 tool steel substrates using direct current (DC) magnetron sputtering. The Cr/Al composition in the target was varied by inserting either four or eight chromium (Cr) plugs into cavities machined into an aluminum (Al) plate target. Nitrogen was introduced as a reactive gas to facilitate the formation of the nitride phase. Coatings were deposited at substrate bias voltages of −30 V, −50 V, and −60 V to study the combined effects of composition and ion energy on coating properties. Compositional analysis of coatings deposited at a −50 V bias revealed Cr/Al ratios of approximately 0.8 and 1.7 for the 4- and 8-plug configurations, respectively. This increase in the Cr/Al ratio led to a 2.6-fold improvement in coating hardness. Coatings produced using the eight-Cr-plug target exhibited a nearly linear increase in hardness with increasing substrate bias voltage. Cross-sectional scanning electron microscopy revealed a uniform bilayer structure consisting of an approximately 0.5 µm metal interlayer beneath a 2–3 µm CrAlN coating. Surface morphology analysis indicated the presence of coarse microdroplets in coatings with the lower Cr/Al ratio. These microdroplets were significantly suppressed in coatings with higher Cr/Al content, especially at increased bias voltages. This suppression is likely due to enhanced ion bombardment associated with the increased Cr content, attributed to Cr’s relatively higher atomic mass compared to Al. Coatings with lower hardness exhibited greater scratch resistance, likely due to the influence of residual compressive stresses. The findings highlight the critical role of both Cr/Al content and substrate bias in tailoring the tribo-mechanical performance of PVD CrAlN coatings for wear-resistant applications. Full article

This study investigates the wear performance of 20CrMnTi steel, a commonly used material for spiral bevel gears, after heat treatment, with a focus on the microstructural evolution and wear behavior in both the surface and gradient direction of the carburized layer. The results show that the microstructure composition in the gradient direction of the carburized layer gradually transitions from martensite and residual austenite to a martensite–bainite mixed structure, and eventually transforms to fully bainitic in the matrix. With the extension of carburizing time, both the effective carburized layer depth and the hardened layer depth significantly increase. Wear track morphology analysis reveals that the wear track depth gradually becomes shallower and narrower, and the wear rate increases significantly with increasing load. However, the friction coefficient shows little sensitivity to changes in carburizing time and load. Further investigations show that as the carburized layer depth increases, the carbon concentration and hardness of the samples gradually decrease, resulting in an increase in the average wear rate and a progressive worsening of wear severity. After the wear tests, different depths of plowing grooves, spalling, and fish-scale-like features were observed in the wear regions. Additionally, with the increase in load and carburized layer depth, both the width and depth of the wear tracks significantly increased. The research results provide a theoretical basis for optimizing the surface carburizing process of 20CrMnTi steel and improving its wear resistance. Full article

Enhancing the wear resistance of structural steels used in demanding industrial applications is critical for extending components’ lifespan and ensuring mechanical reliability. In this study, we investigated the influence of flux-cored arc welding (FCAW) hardfacing on the tensile behavior of S355MC steel. Protective Fe-Cr-C alloy layers were deposited in one and two successive passes using automated FCAW, followed by tensile testing of specimens oriented at varying angles relative to the weld bead direction. The methodology integrated 3D scanning and digital image correlation to accurately capture geometric and deformation parameters. The experimental results revealed a consistent reduction in tensile strength and ductility in all the welded configurations compared to the base material. The application of the second weld layer further intensified this effect, while specimen orientation influenced the degree of mechanical degradation. Microstructural analysis confirmed carbide refinement and good adhesion, but also identified welding-induced defects and residual stresses as factors that contributed to performance loss. The findings highlight a clear trade-off between improved surface wear resistance and compromised structural properties, underscoring the importance of process optimization. Strategic selection of welding parameters and bead orientation is essential to balance functional durability with mechanical integrity in industrial applications. Full article

Multi-Objective Optimization of Abrasive Cutting Process Conditions to Increase Economic Efficiency

Existing studies on the abrasive cutting process have primarily focused on the influence of cutting conditions on key parameters such as temperature, cut-off wheel wear, and machined surface quality. However, the choice of working conditions is often made based on the experience of qualified personnel or using data from reference sources. The literature also provides optimal values for the cutting mode elements, but these are only valid for specific methods and cutting conditions. This article proposes a new multi-objective optimization approach for determining the conditions for the implementation of the abrasive cutting process that leads to Pareto-optimal solutions for improving economic efficiency, evaluated by production rate and manufacturing net cost parameters. To demonstrate this approach, the elastic abrasive cutting process of structural steels C45 and 42Cr4 has been selected. Theoretical–experimental models for production rate and manufacturing net cost have been developed, reflecting the complex influence of the conditions of the elastic abrasive cutting process (compression force of the cut-off wheel on the workpiece and rotational frequency of the workpiece). Multi-objective compromise optimization based on a genetic algorithm has been conducted by applying two methods—the determination of a compromise optimal area for the conditions of the elastic abrasive cutting process and the generalized utility function method. Optimal conditions for the implementation of the elastic abrasive cutting process have been determined, ensuring the best combination of high production rate and low manufacturing net cost. This article provides a comprehensive overview of recent studies concerning laser heat treatment (LHT) of structural and tool steels, with particular attention to the 21NiCrMo2 steel used for carburized gear wheels. Analysis includes the influence of critical laser processing conditions—including power output, motion speed, spot size, and focusing distance—on surface microhardness, hardening depth, and microstructure development. The findings indicate that the energy density is the dominant factor that affects the outcomes of LHT. Optimal results, in the form of a high surface microhardness and a sufficient depth of hardening, were achieved within the energy density range of 80–130 J/mm2, allowing for martensitic transformation while avoiding defects such as melting or cracking. At densities below 50 J/mm2, incomplete hardening occurred with minimal microhardness improvement. On the contrary, densities exceeding 150–180 J/mm2 caused surface overheating and degradation. For carburized 21NiCrMo2 steel, the most effective parameters included 450–1050 W laser power, 1.7–2.5 mm/s scanning speed, and 2.0–2.3 mm beam diameter. The review confirms that process control through energy-based parameters allows for reliable prediction and optimization of LHT for industrial applications, particularly in components exposed to cyclic loads. A novel stainless steel with high Mn and Mo content (much higher than traditional stainless steel), designated CH241SS, was developed as a potential replacement for Cr-Mo-V alloy steel in the cold forging applications of precision industry. Through carbon reduction in an environmentally friendly manner and a two-stage heat treatment process, the hardness of as-cast CH241 was tailored from HRC 37 to HRC 29, thereby meeting the industrial specifications of cold-forged steel (≤HRC 30). X-ray diffraction analysis of the as-cast microstructure revealed the presence of a small amount of ferrite, martensite, austenite, and alloy carbides. After heat treatment, CH241 exhibited a dual-phase microstructure consisting of ferrite and martensite with dispersed Cr(Ni-Mo) alloy carbides. The CH241 alloy demonstrated excellent high-temperature stability. No noticeable softening occurred after 72 h for the second-stage heat treatment. Based on the mechanical and room-temperature tensile fatigue properties of CH241-F (forging material) and CH241-ST (soft-tough heat treatment), it was demonstrated that the CH241 stainless steel was superior to the traditional stainless steel 4xx in terms of strength and fatigue life. Therefore, CH241 stainless steel can be introduced into cold forging and can be used in precision fatigue application. The relevant data include composition design and heat treatment properties. This study is an important milestone in assisting the upgrading of the vehicle and aerospace industries. Full article

The object of this study is welded joints of AISI 321 and Ti-6Al-4V, obtained by diffusion welding on developed conical surfaces. The problem of creating bimetallic joints of AISI 321 and Ti-6Al-4V with developed conical contact surfaces, using diffusion welding through an intermediate Electrolytic Tough Pitch Copper (Cu-ETP) copper layer, was solved. The joints were studied using micro-X-ray spectral analysis, microstructural analysis, and mechanical tests. High mutual diffusion of copper and titanium, along with increased concentrations of Cr and V in copper, was detected. The shear strength of the obtained welded joints is 250 MPa and 235 MPa at 30 min and 15 min, respectively, which is higher than the copper layer’s strength (180 MPa). The obtained results are explained by the dislocation diffusion mechanism in the volume of grains and beyond, due to thermal deformations during welding. Under operating conditions of internal pressure and cryogenic temperatures, the strength of the connection is ensured by the entire two-layer structure, and tightness is ensured by a vacuum-tight diffusion connection. The obtained strength of the connection (250 MPa) is sufficient under the specified operating conditions. Analysis of existing solutions in the literature review indicates that industrial application of technology for manufacturing bimetallic adapters from AISI 321 stainless steel and Ti-6Al-4V titanium alloy is limited to butt joints with small geometric dimensions. Studies of the transition zone structure and diffusion processes in bimetallic joints with developed conical contact surfaces enabled determination of factors affecting joint structure and diffusion coefficients. The obtained bimetallic adapters, made of Ti-6Al-4V titanium alloy and AISI 321 stainless steel, can be used to connect titanium high-pressure vessels with stainless steel pipelines. Full article

Sanicro 25 (X7NiCrWCuCoNb25-23-3-3-2) steel is specifically designed for use in superheater components within the latest generation of conventional power plants. These power plants operate under conditions often referred to as super-ultra-supercritical, with steam parameters that can reach up to 30 MPa and temperatures of 653 °C for fresh steam and 672 °C for reheated steam. While last-generation supercritical power plants still rely on fossil fuels, they represent a significant step forward in more sustainable energy production. The most sophisticated facilities of this kind can achieve thermodynamic efficiencies exceeding 47%. This study aimed to conduct a detailed analysis of the initial precipitation processes occurring in Sanicro 25 steel within the temperature range of 700–900 °C. The temperature of 700 °C corresponds to the operational conditions of this material, particularly in secondary steam superheaters in thermal power plants that operate under ultra-supercritical parameters. Understanding precipitation processes is crucial for optimizing mechanical performance, particularly in terms of long-term strength and creep resistance. To accurately assess the microstructural changes that occur during the early stages of service, a digital twin approach was employed, which included CALPHAD simulations and experimental heat treatments. Experimental annealing tests were conducted in air within the temperature range of 700–900 °C. Precipitation behavior was simulated using the Thermo-Calc 2025a with Dictra software package. The results from Prisma simulations correlated well with the experimental data related to the kinetics of phase transformations; however, it was noted that the predicted sizes of the precipitates were generally smaller than those observed in experiments. Additionally, computational limitations were encountered during some simulations due to the complexity arising from the numerous alloying elements present in Sanicro 25 steel. This study investigated the influence of various annealing treatments on the microstructure and corrosion behavior of 20MnCr5 steel in a 3.5% NaCl solution. A combination of microstructural analysis, hardness testing, and electrochemical techniques was used to comprehensively characterize each condition. To enhance data interpretability, a correlation analysis was performed and visualized through a correlation diagram, enabling statistical assessment of the relationships between grain features, phase distribution, mechanical properties, and corrosion indicators. The results demonstrated that corrosion resistance in 20MnCr5 steel is not governed by a single parameter but by the interplay between grain size, morphology, and phase balance. Excessive pearlite content or coarse, irregular grains were consistently associated with higher corrosion rates and lower electrochemical stability. In contrast, a moderate phase ratio and equiaxed grain structure, achieved through normalization, resulted in better corrosion resistance, confirmed by the highest polarization resistance and lowest corrosion current density values among all samples. Although increased grain refinement improved the hardness, it did not always correlate with a better corrosion performance, especially when morphological uniformity was lacking. This highlights the importance of balancing mechanical and corrosion properties through carefully controlled thermal processing. Full article

Due to the frequent occurrence of coarse-grained structures in large hydrogenation tube sheets, their hydrogen resistance and corrosion resistance deteriorate, significantly shortening their service life. Therefore, microstructure evolution must be strictly controlled during the forging process. High-temperature compression tests were simulated using a Gleeble-1500D thermal simulator to investigate the hot deformation behavior of 14Cr1Mo pressure vessel steel under deformation conditions of 1050–1250 °C and strain rates of 0.01–1 s−1. Based on the experimental data, the flow stress curve of 14Cr1Mo steel was obtained, and its thermal deformation behavior was analyzed. Furthermore, the dynamic recrystallization (DRX) kinetic model and grain size model of 14Cr1Mo steel were established. These models were then integrated into the finite element software Forge® to validate the accuracy of the DRX models. The results showed excellent agreement between the simulated and experimentally measured grain sizes, with a maximum deviation of less than 8%, confirming the high accuracy of the dynamic recrystallization models. These models provide a theoretical basis for finite element simulation and microstructure control in the manufacturing of super-large pressure vessel tube sheet forgings. Full article

Weathering steel (WS) is widely used in bridge construction due to its high corrosion resistance, durability, and low maintenance requirements. This paper reviews the performance of WS bridges in Canadian climates, focusing on the formation of protective patina, influencing factors, and long-term maintenance strategies. The protective patina, composed of stable iron oxyhydroxides, develops over time under favorable wet–dry cycles but can be disrupted by environmental aggressors such as chlorides, sulfur dioxide, and prolonged moisture exposure. Key alloying elements like Cu, Cr, Ni, and Nb enhance corrosion resistance, while design considerations—such as drainage optimization and avoidance of crevices—are critical for performance. The study highlights the vulnerability of WS bridges to microenvironments, including de-icing salt exposure, coastal humidity, and debris accumulation. Regular inspections and maintenance, such as debris removal, drainage system upkeep, and targeted cleaning, are essential to mitigate corrosion risks. Climate change exacerbates challenges, with rising temperatures, altered precipitation patterns, and ocean acidification accelerating corrosion in coastal regions. Future research directions include optimizing WS compositions with advanced alloys (e.g., rare earth elements) and integrating climate-resilient design practices. This review highlights the need for a holistic approach combining material science, proactive maintenance, and adaptive design to ensure the longevity of WS bridges in evolving environmental conditions.
