Yellow leaf disease (YLD), caused by the areca palm yellow leaf phytoplasma (APYL), poses a significant threat to the sustainability of the areca palm industry. Timely and accurate detection is essential for effectively diagnosing and managing this disease. This study developed a novel nested PCR system using primers specifically designed from conserved regions of the phytoplasma 16S rDNA sequence to overcome limitations such as false positives often associated with universal nested PCR primers. The resulting primer pairs HNP-1F/HNP-1R (outer) and HNP-2F/HNP-2R (inner) consistently amplified a distinct 429 bp fragment from APYL strains belonging to the 16SrI and 16SrII groups. The detection sensitivity reached 7.5 × 10−7 ng/μL for 16SrI and 4 × 10−7 ng/μL for 16SrII. Field validation using leaf samples from symptomatic areca palms confirmed the high specificity and reliability of the new primers in detecting APYL. Compared to conventional universal primers (P1/P7 and R16mF2/R16mR1), this newly developed nested PCR system demonstrated higher specificity, sensitivity, and speed, making it a valuable tool for the early diagnosis and management of YLD in areca palms. In this study, we investigate the presence of the Griffiths-like anomaly in the geometrically frustrated antiferromagnet HoBaCo4O7+δ and globally its absence in ErBaCo4O7+δ, despite only small differences in the ionic radii, f-electron occupancy, and the corresponding crystal structures of the Ho3+ and Er3+-members. Previous studies have identified the Griffiths phase in the Dy-analog, DyBaCo4O7+δ, suggesting certain inherent features of this class of materials that regularly give rise to such anomalies. To explore the curious disappearance of such an anomalous feature in ErBaCo4O7+δ, we prepared a series of compounds with varying compositions Ho1xErxBaCo4O7+δ (0x1) and systematically studied the evolution of various physical properties as a function of Er-doping. Our experimental studies, including X-ray diffraction (XRD), magnetic, X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), heat capacity, and muon spin relaxation spectroscopy (μSR spectroscopy), revealed that while the Griffiths-like anomaly indeed disappears with doping at the macroscopic level, signatures of inhomogeneity are retained in ErBaCo4O7+δ too, at least at the local level. Overall, our results highlight the significant role of ionic radius and local structural distortions in stabilizing the Griffiths phase in this class of systems. Full article

BaTiO3-based lead-free ferroelectric films with a large recoverable energy density (Wrec) and a high energy efficiency (η) are crucial components for next-generation dielectric capacitors, which are used in energy conditioning and storage applications in integrated circuits. In this study, grain-engineered (Ba0.95,Sr0.05)(Zr0.2,Ti0.8)O3 (BSZT) ferroelectric thick films (~500 nm) were prepared on Si substrates. These films were deposited at 350 °C, 100 °C lower than the temperature at which the LaNiO3 buffer layer was deposited on Pt/Ti. This method reduced the (001) grain population due to a weakened interface growth mode, while promoting volume growth modes that produced (110) and (111) grains with a high polarizability. As a result, these films exhibited a maximum polarization of ~88.0 μC/cm2, a large Wrec of ~203.7 J/cm3, and a high energy efficiency η of 81.2% (@ 6.4 MV/cm). The small-field dielectric constant nearly tripled as compared with that of the same BSZT/LaNiO3 heterostructure deposited at the same temperature (350 °C or 450 °C). The enhanced linear dielectric response, delayed ferroelectric polarization saturation, and increased dielectric strength due to the nano-grain size, collectively contributed to the improved energy storage performance. This work provides a novel approach for fabricating high-performance dielectric capacitors for energy storage applications. Full article

Groundwater is a critical resource in semi-arid regions like Morocco’s Guire Basin, yet pollution and overexploitation threaten its sustainability. This study evaluates the groundwater quality of the Guire aquifer (Eastern High Atlas) using an integrated approach combining hydrochemical, isotopic (δ18O, δ2H, δ13C), multivariate statistical, and Geographic Information System (GIS) analyses alongside the Water Quality Index (WQI). Sixteen wells were monitored for physicochemical parameters (pH: 7–7.9; EC: 480–3004 μS/cm; BOD5: 1.03–30.5 mg/L; COD: 10.2–45.75 mg/L) and major ions, revealing widespread exceedances of Moroccan standards for Cl, HCO3, Mg2+, Ca2+, and NH4+. WQI classified 81% of samples as “Poor” to “Unsuitable for drinking” (WQI: 51–537), driven by elevated Cl, Na+, and SO42− from Triassic evaporite dissolution and NO3 (up to 45 mg/L) from agricultural runoff. Stable isotopes (δ18O: −7.73‰ to −5.08‰; δ2H: −66.14‰ to −44.20‰) indicate Atlantic-influenced recharge at 900–2200 m altitudes, with a δ18O-δ2H slope of 5.93 reflecting evaporation during infiltration. Strontium (Sr2+/Ca2+: 0.0024–0.0236) and bromide (Br/Cl: 8.47 × 10−5–9.88 × 10−4) ratios further confirm evaporitic dominance over anthropogenic contamination. This work provides actionable insights for policymakers, advocating for targeted restrictions on fertilizers, enhanced monitoring near evaporite zones, and artificial recharge initiatives. By linking geogenic/anthropogenic contamination to governance strategies, this study advances sustainable groundwater management in semi-arid regions. Full article

A triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) holds significant potential as a self-powered pressure sensor due to its ability to convert mechanical energy into electrical energy. The output voltage of a TENG is directly correlated with the applied pressure, making it highly suitable for pressure sensing applications. Among the key factors influencing TENG performance, the microstructure on the surface plays a crucial role. However, the effect of surface microstructure on charge transfer behavior remains relatively underexplored. Here, a stripe-patterned rough TENG (SR-TENG) fabricated by laser ablation and molding is proposed. The stripe-patterned rough surface exhibits excellent deformation properties, allowing for more effective contact area between the tribolayers. Additionally, the localized surface-edge enhanced electric field at the stripe boundaries improves surface charge transfer, thereby enhancing overall output performance. The SR-TENG achieved an open-circuit voltage of 97 V, a short-circuit current of 59.6 μA, an instantaneous power of 3.55 mW, and a power density of 1.54 W/m2. As an energy harvester, the SR-TENG successfully powered 150 LEDs. A linear relationship between applied pressure and output voltage was established with a coefficient of determination R2 = 0.94, demonstrating a high sensitivity of 14.14 V/kPa. For practical application, a novel self-powered two-digit pressure switch was developed based on the SR-TENG. This system enables the control of two different LEDs using a single TENG device, triggered by applying a light or hard press. Full article

The polarization fatigue of PbZr1−xTixO3 (PZT) films is one of the most serious failure issues in their practical application. In the present work, Ba0.3Sr0.7Zr0.18Ti0.82O3 (BSZT) was used as an inserting layer to improve the polarization fatigue of PbZr0.50Ti0.50O3 thick film. PZT thick films and BSZT layers were deposited via magnetron sputtering technology. The effects of BSZT layer on the dielectric response, remanent polarization, and fatigue resistance of PZT thick films were investigated experimentally. The results showed that the dielectric constant increased from 457 to 880 (1 MHz), and the reversible/irreversible Rayleigh coefficients were also enhanced. The remanent polarization Pr of the PZT thick films increased from 37 μC/cm2 to 42.4 μC/cm2. After a 1.08 × 109 cycles polarization fatigue test, the ferroelectric polarization loss was 9% for the PZT thick film at 368 kV/cm. The reversible/irreversible Rayleigh coefficients had a very small decline, of only 5% and 2%, respectively. This demonstrates that, different from the previously reported buffer layers, BSZT buffer layers can simultaneously enhance the dielectric and ferroelectric properties and improve the polarization fatigue of PZT thick films. The main purpose was to evaluate the in vitro adhesion strength of direct and semi-direct composite resin restorations in dentin, when the same adhesive system is applied, using microtensile testing (μTBS) and to observe the most recurrent types of failure in the different groups. For this study, 16 intact human mandibular molars without microscopic evidence of lesions were randomly divided into two test groups, according to the restoration strategy: direct restoration (DR) and semi-direct restoration (SR). For both restorative strategies, the same adhesive system (Clearfil SE Bond 2, Kuraray, Tokyo, Japan) was applied to the dentin surface using a two-step self-etching approach with no prior conditioning of the dentin, and the same composite resin (Ceram. x Sepctra ST HV, Dentsply Sirona, Charlotte, NC, USA) was used as a restorative material. The indirect restoration was cemented using resin cement (Variolink Esthetic LC, Ivoclar Vivadent, Schaan, Liechtenstein) within the interior side of the restoration. Each specimen was sliced into sections measuring approximately 1 mm2. The rods were then subjected to a microtensile bond strength test and the statistical analysis on the differences in μTBS between the groups were determined with the Mann–Whitney test. The surfaces were examined to determine the failure mode. The Chi-Square test was used to determine the association between the type of restoration and the failure mode. The DR group presented with a mean μTBS of 38.15 ± 10.75 MPa and a predominance of cohesive failures in the composite resin (69.5%). The SR group showed a mean μTBS of 25.45 ± 10.19 MPa and a predominance of adhesive failures (92.3%). There was not only a statistically significant difference in the adhesive strength of the DR and SR groups (p < 0.001), but also a statistically significant association between the type of restorative strategy and failure mode (p < 0.001). Even though Clearfil SE Bond 2 provided acceptable adhesion to the dentin, using the same two-step self-etch adhesive system, lower adhesive strength and more adhesive failures are expected in semi-direct restorations when compared to direct restorations. In this paper, we present a novel enhanced recycling folded cascode (ERFC) operational transconductance amplifier (OTA), which exhibits high efficiency and a fast transient response under weak inversion. Our innovative combination of adaptive biasing with nested local feedback (ABNLF) effectively enhances the input transconductance and slew rate (SR), thus improving the transient response. By incorporating coupling capacitors at the output stage, we achieve a stable operating region with large signal responses. Both the traditional RFC OTA and the proposed ERFC OTA were designed in a 0.18 μm CMOS process, operating at a power supply of 1.8 V, with quiescent currents of 8 μA and 10.4 μA, respectively. Post-layout simulations reveal a remarkable enhancement in the proposed ERFC OTA over the traditional RFC OTA, with the SR and gain–bandwidth (GBW) surging by 120- and 5.95-fold, respectively. This advancement boosts the efficiency of the traditional RFC OTA and provides an impressive figure of merit (FoM) of 130.04 (V/μs)·pF/μA. Full article

This study presents a multi-analytical investigation of the wooden components from Khufu’s Second Solar Boat, one of the valuable archaeological discoveries in ancient Egypt. The research integrates advanced imaging and analytical techniques to identify wood species, assess deterioration patterns, and characterize the fungal and bacterial biodeteriogens. The initial visual examination documented the state of preservation at the time of discovery. Subsequently, the identification of the wood species was carried out. The deterioration status was assessed using a variety of tools, including scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and high-resolution synchrotron radiation computed microtomography (SR-μCT) for morphological alterations, X-ray diffraction (XRD) for crystallinity changes and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) to assess chemical degradation indexes of wood. Moreover, molecular techniques were used to identify and characterize the presence of biodeterioration agents. Results indicate that ancient craftsmen used cedar wood for the boat construction. The analysed samples exhibited advanced biotic and abiotic degradation, as evidenced by microbiological assessments, XRD measurements of cellulose crystallinity, FTIR indices, SEM micrographs and SR-μCT data. These results provide crucial insights into the long-term degradation processes of archaeological wood in arid environments, enhancing our understanding of ancient Egyptian woodworking practices and informing future conservation strategies for similar artifacts. Background: Differences in radiation-induced lymphopenia and prognosis between methods of radiotherapy (RT) for brain metastases remain unclear. Methods: In this retrospective analysis of patients who underwent whole-brain radiotherapy (WBRT) or stereotactic radiosurgery/radiotherapy (SRS/SRT) for brain metastases, baseline total lymphocyte count (TLC) data were obtained within 2 weeks before RT initiation. Follow-up TLC data were evaluated at 0–2, 2–4, and 4–8 weeks after RT completion. Persistent lymphopenia was defined as <800/μL at any time point. Results: Overall, 138 RT courses in 128 patients were eligible (94 WBRT; 44 SRS/SRT). In the WBRT courses, the median baseline TLC was 1325/μL (IQR: 923–1799). Follow-up TLC decreased significantly to 946/μL (626–1316), 992/μL (675–1291), and 1075/μL (762–1435) (p < 0.001). SRS/SRT courses showed no significant TLC decrease. Multivariate analysis revealed female sex, prior RT, baseline TLC < 800/μL, and WBRT use were significantly associated with persistent lymphopenia. In the WBRT group, overall survival was significantly different between those with and without persistent lymphopenia (median, 2.6 and 6.1 months; p < 0.001). However, there was no significant difference in survival in the SRS/SRT group (p = 0.60). Conclusion: This study suggests SRS/SRT might be preferable for lymphocyte preservation in brain metastasis patients. Full article

The local binding and migration behavior of the proton defect in cubic yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) is studied by first-principles calculations and muon-spin spectroscopy (μSR) measurements. The calculations are based on density-functional theory (DFT) supplemented with a hybrid-functional approach with the proton defect embedded in quasi-random supercells of 10.3 mol% yttria content, where the yttrium–zirconium substitutional defects are charge compensated by oxygen vacancies. Representative migration pathways for the proton comprising both transfer and bond reorientation modes are analysed and linked to the underlying microstructure of the YSZ lattice. The μSR data show the evolution of the diamagnetic fraction corresponding to the muon-isotope analogue with an activation energy of diffusion equal to 0.17 eV. Comparisons between the calculations and the experiment allow an assessment of the character of the short-range migration of the proton particle in cubic YSZ. Full article

Avoided level crossing muon spin resonance (ALC-μSR) is used to characterize muoniated free radicals. These radicals are used as probes of the local environment and reorientational motion of specific components in complex systems. The parameter that provides information about the anisotropic motion is the motionally-averaged muon dipolar-hyperfine coupling constant (Dμ). The ALC-μSR spectra of muoniated radicals in anisotropic environments frequently have Lorentzian-like Δ1 resonances, which makes it challenging to extract Dμ. In this paper, we derive a means to estimate|Dμ| from ALC-μSR spectra with Lorentzian-like resonances by measuring the amplitude, width, and position of the Δ1 resonance and the amplitude, width, and position of a Δ0 resonance. Numerical simulations were used to test this relationship for radicals with a wide range of muon and proton hyperfine parameters. We use this methodology to determine |Dμ| for the Mu adducts of the cosurfactant 2-phenylethanol in C12E4 bilayers. From this we determined the amplitude of the anisotropic reorientational motion of the cosurfactant. Full article

All the compositions maintained their pseudo-cubic MPB structural stability. The composition of BFST:0.15Sm ceramics exhibited an excellent remnant polarization (Pr) of ~52.11 μC/cm2, an enhanced d33 of 101 pC/N, and the highest relative dielectric constant (ɛr) of ~1152, which are much improved as compared to that of pure BFST ceramics. BFST:0.15Sm ceramics demonstrated a Curie temperature (TC) of 378 °C. Moreover, the composition exhibited high thermal stability for d33 72 pC/N (only a 28% decrease), even at a high temperature of 300 °C. Such outstanding outcomes make BFST:0.15Sm ceramics an ideal applicant for high-temperature piezoelectric applications. Full article

Wind turbines are a solution for sustainable energy, significantly reducing carbon emissions and fostering a circular economy for more cost-effective and cleaner power generation, in line with worldwide environmental aspirations. In this context, this research aims to explore a novel two-stage, twisted-blade micro-Vertical-Axis Wind Turbine (μ-VAWT)alternative inspired by the Savonius Rotor (SR). This investigation utilizes the κω SST turbulence model to explore the power coefficient (CP) and torque coefficient (CT), finding CP values ranging from 0.02 to 0.08 across the turbine by altering the free stream velocity (V). CT analysis further delves into four specific sections, highlighting areas of particular interest. These results are validated by examining velocity contours, pressure contours, and streamlines in four horizontal sections, demonstrating that the proposed turbine model exhibits minimal torque fluctuation. Moreover, the analysis of vertical wind streamlines illustrates very low interference with various wind turbine proposals, underscoring the turbine’s efficiency and potential for integration into diverse wind energy projects. This study investigated the mechanism by which KMUP-1, a xanthine derivative with phosphodiesterase inhibitory activity, inhibits hypoxia-induced canonical transient receptor potential channel 1 (TRPC1) protein overexpression and regulates [Ca2+]i through store-operated calcium channels (SOCs). Ex vivo PASMCs were cultured from Sprague-Dawley rats in a modular incubator chamber under 1% O2/5% CO2 for 24 h to elucidate TRPC1 overexpression and observe the Ca2+ release and entry. KMUP-1 (1 μM) inhibited hypoxia-induced TRPC family protein encoded for SOC overexpression, particularly TRPC1. KMUP-1 inhibition of TRPC1 protein was restored by the protein kinase G (PKG) inhibitor KT5823 (1 μM) and the protein kinase A (PKA) inhibitor KT5720 (1 μM). KMUP-1 attenuated protein kinase C (PKC) activator phorbol 12-myristate 13-acetate (PMA, 1 μM)-upregulated TRPC1. We suggest that the effects of KMUP-1 on TRPC1 might involve activating the cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP)/PKG and cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP)/PKA pathways and inhibiting the PKC pathway. We also used Fura 2-acetoxymethyl ester (Fura 2-AM, 5 μM) to measure the stored calcium release from the sarcoplasmic reticulum (SR) and calcium entry through SOCs in hypoxic PASMCs under treatment with thapsigargin (1 μM) and nifedipine (5 μM). In hypoxic conditions, store-operated calcium entry (SOCE) activity was enhanced in PASMCs, and KMUP-1 diminished this activity. In conclusion, KMUP-1 inhibited the expression of TRPC1 protein and the activity of SOC-mediated Ca2+ entry upon SR Ca2+ depletion in hypoxic PASMCs. Full article
