Wheeled rovers are widely used in lunar and planetary exploration missions owing to their mechanical simplicity and energy efficiency. However, they face serious mobility challenges on sloped soft terrain, especially in terms of sideslip and loss of attitude angle when traversing across slopes. Previous research proposed using wheelbase extension/contraction and intentionally sinking wheels into the ground, thereby increasing shear resistance and reducing sideslip. Building upon this concept, this study proposes a novel recovery method that integrates beam extension/contraction and Archimedean screw-shaped wheels to enable lateral movement without rotating the rover body. The beam mechanism allows for independent wheel movement, maintaining stability by anchoring stationary wheels during recovery. Meanwhile, the helical structure of the screw wheels helps reduce lateral earth pressure by scraping soil away from the sides, improving lateral drivability. Driving experiments on a sloped sandbox test bed confirmed that the proposed 2DPPL (two-dimensional push-pull locomotion) method significantly reduces sideslip and prevents a drop in attitude angle during slope traversal. Deep space Color Remote Sensing Images (DCRSIs) are of great significance in reconstructing the three-dimensional appearance of celestial bodies. Among them, deep space color restoration, as a means to ensure the authenticity of deep space image colors, has significant research value. The existing deep space color restoration methods have gradually evolved into a joint restoration mode that integrates color images and spectrometers to overcome the limitations of on-orbit calibration plates; however, there is limited research on theoretical models for this type of method. Therefore, this article begins with the physical process of deep space color imaging, gradually establishes a color imaging spectral model, and proposes a new color restoration method for the color restoration of Mars remote sensing images. The experiment verifies that our proposed method can significantly reduce color deviation, achieving an average of 8.43 CIE DE 2000 color deviation units, a decrease of 2.63 (23.78%) compared to the least squares method. The color deviation decreased by 21.47 (71.81%) compared to before restoration. Hence, our method can improve the accuracy of color restoration of DCRSIs in space orbit. Full article

Satellite communications are pivotal to global Internet access, connectivity, and the advancement of information warfare. Despite these importance, the open nature of satellite channels makes them vulnerable to eavesdropping, making the enhancement of interception resistance in satellite communications a critical issue in both academic and industrial circles. Within the realm of satellite communications, polarization modulation and quadrature techniques are essential for information transmission and interference suppression. To boost electromagnetic countermeasures in complex battlefield scenarios, this paper integrates multi-parameter weighted-type fractional Fourier transform (MP-WFRFT) with directional modulation (DM) algorithms, building upon polarization techniques. Initially, the operational mechanisms of the polarization-amplitude-phase modulation (PAPM), MP-WFRFT, and DM algorithms are elucidated. Secondly, it introduces a novel variable polarization-amplitude-phase modulation (VPAPM) scheme that integrates variable polarization with amplitude-phase modulation. Subsequently, leveraging the VPAPM modulation scheme, an exploration of the anti-interception capabilities of MP-WFRFT through parameter adjustment is presented. Rooted in an in-depth analysis of simulation data, the anti-scanning capabilities of MP-WFRFT are assessed in terms of scale vectors in the horizontal and vertical direction. Finally, exploiting the potential of the robust anti-scanning capabilities of MP-WFRFT and the directional property of antenna arrays in DM, the paper proposes a secure transmission technique employing directional variable polarization modulation with MP-WFRFT. The performance simulation analysis demonstrates that the integration of MP-WFRFT and DM significantly outperforms individual secure transmission methods, improving anti-interception performance by at least an order of magnitude at signal-to-noise ratios above 10 dB. Consequently, this approach exhibits considerable potential and engineering significance for its application within satellite communication systems. Full article

Technological roadmaps are essential tools for managing and planning complex projects, especially in the rapidly evolving field of space exploration. Defined as dynamic schedules, they support strategic and long-term planning while coordinating current and future objectives with particular technology solutions. Currently, the available methodologies are mostly built on experts’ opinions and in just few cases, methodologies and tools have been developed to support the decision makers with a rational approach. In any case, all the available approaches are meant to draw “ideal” maturation plans. Therefore, it is deemed essential to develop an integrate new algorithms able to decision guidelines on “non-nominal” scenarios. In this context, Politecnico di Torino, in collaboration with the European Space Agency (ESA) and Thales Alenia Space–Italia, developed the Technology Roadmapping Strategy (TRIS), a multi-step process designed to create robust and data-driven roadmaps. However, one of the main concerns with its initial implementation was that TRIS did not account for time and budget estimates specific to the space exploration environment, nor was it capable of generating alternative development paths under constrained conditions. This paper discloses two main significant updates to TRIS methodology: (1) improved time and budget estimation to better reflect the specific challenges of space exploration scenarios and (2) the capability of generating alternative roadmaps, i.e., alternative technological maturation paths in resource-constrained scenarios, balancing financial and temporal limitations. The application of the developed routines to available case studies confirms the tool’s ability to provide consistent planning outputs across multiple scenarios without exceeding 20% deviation from expert-based judgements available as reference. The results demonstrate the potential of the enhanced methodology in supporting strategic decision making in early-phase mission planning, ensuring adaptability to changing conditions, optimized use of time and financial resources, as well as guaranteeing an improved flexibility of the tool. By integrating data-driven prioritization, uncertainty modeling, and resource-constrained planning, TRIS equips mission planners with reliable tools to navigate the complexities of space exploration projects. This methodology ensures that roadmaps remain adaptable to changing conditions and optimized for real-world challenges, supporting the sustainable advancement of space exploration initiatives. The growing density of space objects in low Earth orbit (LEO), driven by the deployment of large satellite constellations, has elevated the risk of orbital collisions and the need for high-precision conjunction analysis. Traditional methods based on Two-Line Element (TLE) data suffer from limited accuracy and insufficient uncertainty modeling. This study proposes a hybrid collision assessment framework that combines Monte Carlo simulation, spline-based refinement of the time of closest approach (TCA), and a multi-stage deterministic refinement process. The methodology begins with probabilistic sampling of TLE uncertainties, followed by a coarse search for TCA using the SGP4 propagator. A cubic spline interpolation then enhances temporal resolution, and a hierarchical multi-stage refinement computes the final TCA and minimum distance with sub-second and sub-kilometer accuracy. The framework was validated using real-world TLE data from over 2600 debris objects and active satellites. Results demonstrated a reduction in average TCA error to 0.081 s and distance estimation error to 0.688 km. The approach is computationally efficient, with average processing times below one minute per conjunction event using standard hardware. Its compatibility with operational space situational awareness (SSA) systems and scalability for high-volume screening make it suitable for integration into real-time space traffic management workflows. In space gravitational wave detection, various physical effects in the spacecraft, such as self-gravity, electricity, and magnetism, will introduce undesirable parasitic stiffness. The coupling noise between stiffness and the motion states of the test mass critically affects the performance of scientific detection, making accurate stiffness identification crucial. In response to the question, this paper proposes a method to optimize the test mass motion state for enhancing stiffness identification performance. First, the dynamics of the test mass are studied and a recursive least squares algorithm is applied for the implementation of on-orbit stiffness identification. Then, the motion state of the test mass is parametrically characterized by multi-frequency sinusoidal signals as the variable to be optimized, with the optimization objectives and constraints of stiffness identification defined based on convergence time, convergence accuracy, and engineering requirements. To tackle the dual-objective, computationally expensive nature of the problem, a multigranularity surrogate-assisted evolutionary algorithm with individual progressive constraints (MGSAEA-IPC) is proposed. A fuzzy radial basis function neural network PID (FRBF-PID) controller is also designed to address complex control needs under varying motion states. Numerical simulations demonstrate that the convergence time after optimization is less than 2 min, and the convergence accuracy is less than 1.5 × 10−10 s−2. This study can provide ideas and design references for subsequent related identification and control missions. Full article

To meet the rapid maneuverability and lightweight demands of micro-nano satellites, a space micro solid thruster using 3D-printed short glass fiber reinforced polyamide 6 (PA6GF) composites was developed. Thruster shells with wall thicknesses of 4, 3, and 2.5 mm were designed, and ground ignition tests were conducted to monitor chamber pressure and shell temperature. Compared with conventional metallic thrusters, PA6GF composites have exhibited excellent thermal insulation and sufficient mechanical strength. Under 8 MPa and 2773 K ignition conditions, the shell thickness was reduced to 2.5 mm and could withstand pressures up to 10.37 MPa. These results indicate that PA6GF composites are well-suited for space micro solid thrusters with inner diameters of 15–70 mm, offering new possibilities for lightweight space propulsion system design. In response to the increasing demand for high-precision navigation of satellites operating in the cislunar space, this study introduces an onboard orbit determination algorithm considering both convergence and computational efficiency, referred to as the Sliding-Window Batch Processing (SWBP) algorithm. This algorithm combines the strengths of data batch processing and the sequential processing algorithm, utilizing measurement data from multiple historical and current epochs to update the orbit state of the current epoch. This algorithm facilitates rapid convergence in orbit determination, even in instances where the initial orbit error is large. The SWBP algorithm has been used to evaluate the navigation performance in the Distant Retrograde Orbit (DRO) and the Earth–Moon transfer orbit. The scenario involves a low-Earth-orbit (LEO) satellite establishing satellite-to-satellite tracking (SST) links with both a DRO satellite and an Earth–Moon transfer satellite. The LEO satellite can determine its orbit accurately by receiving GNSS signals. The experiments show that the DRO satellite achieves an orbit determination accuracy of 100 m within 100 h under an initial position error of 500 km, and the transfer orbit satellite reaches an orbit determination accuracy of 600 m within 3.5 h under an initial position error of 100 km. When the Earth–Moon transfer satellite exhibits a large initial orbital error (on the order of hundreds of kilometers) or the LEO satellite’s positional accuracy is degraded, the SWBP algorithm demonstrates superior convergence speed and precision in orbit determination compared to the Extended Kalman Filter (EKF). This confirms the proposed algorithm’s capability to handle complex orbital determination scenarios effectively. Full article

A Digital Elevation Model (DEM) provides accurate topographic data for planetary exploration (e.g., Moon and Mars), essential for tasks like lander navigation and path planning. This study proposes the first latent diffusion-based algorithm for DEM generation, leveraging a conditional decoder to enhance reconstruction accuracy from RGB satellite images. The algorithm performs the diffusion process in the latent space and uses a conditional decoder module to enhance the decoding accuracy of the DEM latent vectors. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm outperforms the baseline algorithm in terms of reconstruction accuracy, providing a new technical approach to efficiently reconstruct DEMs for extraterrestrial planets. During atmospheric reentry, a significant number of chemical reactions are produced inside the high-temperature shock wave formed upstream of the spacecraft. Chemical reactions can significantly alter the flowfield structure surrounding the vehicle and affect surface properties, including heat transfer, pressure, and skin friction coefficients. In this scenario, the primary goal of this investigation is to evaluate the Quantum-Kinetic chemistry model for computing rarefied reactive gas flow over simple and complex geometries. The results are compared with well-established reaction models available for the transitional flow regime. The study focuses on two configurations, a sphere and the Orion capsule, analyzed at different altitudes to assess the impact of chemical nonequilibrium across varying flow rarefaction levels. Including chemical reactions led to lower post-shock temperatures, broader shock structures, and significant species dissociation in both geometries. These effects strongly influenced the surface heat flux, pressure, and temperature distributions. Comparison with results from the literature confirmed the validity of the implemented QK model and highlighted the importance of including chemical kinetics when simulating hypersonic flows in the upper atmosphere. The increasing presence of non-cooperative targets poses significant challenges to the space environment and threatens the sustainability of aerospace operations. Accurate on-orbit perception of such targets, particularly those without cooperative markers, requires advanced algorithms and efficient system architectures. This study presents a hardware–software co-design framework for the pose estimation of non-cooperative targets. Firstly, a two-stage architecture is proposed, comprising object detection and pose estimation. YOLOv5s is modified with a Focus module to enhance feature extraction, and URSONet adopts global average pooling to reduce the computational burden. Optimization techniques, including batch normalization fusion, ReLU integration, and linear quantization, are applied to improve inference efficiency. Secondly, a customized FPGA-based accelerator is developed with an instruction scheduler, memory slicing mechanism, and computation array. Instruction-level control supports model generalization, while a weight concatenation strategy improves resource utilization during convolution. Finally, a heterogeneous DSP–FPGA system is implemented, where the DSP manages data pre-processing and result integration, and the FPGA performs core inference. The system is deployed on a Xilinx X7K325T FPGA operating at 200 MHz. Experimental results show that the optimized model achieves a peak throughput of 399.16 GOP/s with less than 1% accuracy loss. The proposed design reaches 0.461 and 0.447 GOP/s/DSP48E1 for two model variants, achieving a 2× to 3× improvement over comparable designs. Full article

In this study, a novel shape memory alloy actuated bearing active preload system (SMA-BAPS) was proposed and experimentally demonstrated. SMA actuators placed in a single or antagonistic configuration were employed to drive the screw pair and thus fulfill one-way or bidirectional preload adjustment. Moreover, the self-locking screw pair was used to maintain the bearing preload without external energy input. To determine the parameters of screw pair and SMA actuators, a detailed design process was conducted based on analytical models of the proposed system. Finally, a screw pair with a lead of 3 mm and SMA actuators with a diameter of 0.5 mm and a length of 130 mm were adopted. Prototype tests were conducted to validate and evaluate the performance of the preload adjustment with the SMA-BAPS. The resistive torque and the natural frequency of spindles were recorded to represent the preload level of the bearing. Through the performance tests, the SMA-BAPS induced a maximum 47% variation in the resistive torque and a 20% variation in the spindle’s natural frequency. The response time of the SMA-BAPS was less than 5 s when the heating current of 5 A was applied on the SMA actuator. This design highlighted the compact size, quick response, as well as the bidirectional preload adjustment, representing its potential use in aerospace mechanisms and advanced motors. Full article

Deployable thin-film antennas deliver large aperture gains and high stowage efficiency for spaceborne phased arrays but suffer wrinkling-induced planarity loss and radiation distortion. To bridge the lack of electromechanical coupling models for tensioned thin-film patch antennas, we present a unified framework combining structural deformation and electromagnetic simulation. We derive a coupling model capturing the increased bending stiffness of stepped-thickness membranes, formulate a wrinkling analysis algorithm to compute tension-induced displacements, and fit representative unit-cell deformations to a dual-domain displacement model. Parametric studies across stiffness ratios confirm the framework’s ability to predict shifts in pattern, gain, and impedance due to wrinkling. This tool supports the optimized design of wrinkle-resistant thin-film phased arrays for reliable, high-performance space communications. Full article

With the advancement of the third-generation BeiDou Navigation Satellite System (BDS-3), BeiDou dual-frequency multi-constellation (DFMC) receivers exhibit distinct advantages in accuracy and reliability due to their dual-frequency capabilities. However, the integration time imposes constraints on further improvements in sensitivity. To address this limitation, this study proposes a dual-frequency cooperative acquisition strategy targeting the B1C and B2a signals, with the objective of enhancing acquisition performance in weak signal environments. A dual-channel acquisition architecture was designed, incorporating an inter-frequency Doppler assistance technique to improve acquisition efficiency. Simulation results demonstrate that, compared to conventional fixed short integration time architectures, the proposed cooperative acquisition approach increases the receiver’s acquisition sensitivity by 5.7 dB. Real-world experiments further confirm the effectiveness of this strategy, achieving successful acquisition of the PRN28 signal with 5 ms of coherent integration, thereby highlighting its practical utility. This research offers an innovative solution for high-sensitivity signal acquisition in challenging environments for BeiDou DFMC receivers and provides valuable insights for the advancement of high-precision BeiDou applications. Distributed Impulsive Multi-Spacecraft Approach Trajectory Optimization Based on Cooperative Game Negotiation

A cooperative game negotiation strategy considering multiple constraints is proposed for distributed impulsive multi-spacecraft approach missions in the presence of defending spacecraft. It is a dual-stage decision-making method that includes offline trajectory planning and online distributed negotiation. In the trajectory planning stage, a relative orbital dynamics model is first established based on the Clohessy–Wiltshire (CW) equations, and the state transition equations for impulsive maneuvers are derived. Subsequently, a multi-objective optimization model is formulated based on the NSGA-II algorithm, utilizing a constraint dominance principle (CDP) to address various constraints and generate Pareto front solutions for each spacecraft. In the distributed negotiation stage, the negotiation strategy among spacecraft is modeled as a cooperative game. A potential function is constructed to further analyze the existence and global convergence of Nash equilibrium. Additionally, a simulated annealing negotiation strategy is developed to iteratively select the optimal comprehensive approach strategy from the Pareto fronts. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed method effectively optimizes approach trajectories for multi-spacecraft under complex constraints. By leveraging inter-satellite iterative negotiation, the method converges to a Nash equilibrium. Additionally, the simulated annealing negotiation strategy enhances global search performance, avoiding entrapment in local optima. Finally, the effectiveness and robustness of the dual-stage decision-making method were further demonstrated through Monte Carlo simulations. Full article
