This study contributes to the broader sustainability discourse by evaluating public knowledge, awareness, and practices regarding air pollution among residents of Hanoi, Vietnam, focusing on its causes, health impacts, and mitigation strategies. A cross-sectional survey was conducted with 521 individuals in suburbs around Hanoi. A multistage sampling technique, combining cluster and simple random sampling, was used for participant recruitment. Three central and three suburban districts of Hanoi were randomly selected as clusters. One individual from each household was invited to participate and answer a structured survey, which assessed perceptions of air pollution, its human-induced causes, recognised health impacts, and individual and community-level mitigation behaviours. Nearly all participants (98.3%) were aware of air pollution, with 65.3% attributing it to human activities and 61.2% recognising specific air pollutants as primary contributors. The majority (93.9%) acknowledged health impacts, citing respiratory infections (55.1%) and sinus issues (51.2%) as prevalent concerns. Vulnerable groups, such as children under 5 (82.3%) and adults over 65 years old (77.4%), were identified as disproportionately affected. Social media (68.9%) and television (58.3%) were the dominant sources of information. Despite a recognition of air pollution’s importance (98.5%), there was limited engagement in systemic sustainability actions, such as supporting renewable energy initiatives. Most participants (84.3%) reported personal mitigation efforts, including energy-saving practices (35.5%) and walking instead of driving a car or bike (35.3%). While awareness of air pollution and its health impacts is high among Hanoi residents, proactive engagement in systemic solutions remains limited. Policymakers should prioritise community-based programs, public–private partnerships, sustainability education, and culturally tailored policy interventions to bridge gaps between awareness and action. Tailored interventions addressing demographic and cultural factors are essential to fostering socio-environmental sustainability in rapidly urbanising contexts. Full article

Fruit rot seriously damages pomelo production. Given concerns regarding the safety of chemical agents, biological alternatives are becoming more preferable. Therefore, the experiment aimed to (i) identify the pathogens causing pomelo fruit rot disease and (ii) select Trichoderma spp. strains controlling the determined pathogens in Ben Tre, Vietnam. Three pathogenic fungal strains isolated from diseased pomelo fruits were selected. The three pathogenic fungal strains were randomly injected into 9 healthy pomelo fruits. The strain PCP-B02-A2 led to a completely rotten fruit on day 17 after infection, while strains PCP-B02-B2 and PCP-B03-A1 had infected spots whose lengths were 17.5 and 28.1 mm, became larger, and eventually led to the whole fruit rot. The pathogens were identified by the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) technique as Colletotrichum gloeosporioides PCP-B02-A2, Pseudopestalotiopsis camelliae sinensis PCP-B03-A1, and P. chinensis PCP-B02-B2. Twenty-five Trichoderma spp. strains were isolated. The ITS technique identified four strains, including Trichoderma asperellum TP-B01, T. harzianum TP-B08, T. harzianum TP-B09, and T. asperellum TP-C25. The PCP-B02-A2 strain had antagonism at 66.7–68.7%, while those of PCP-B02-B2 and PCP-B03-A1 were 64.2–71.1% and 55.7–57.4%, respectively. Full article

Objectives: This study aims to describe the clinical features and genetic findings of nine Vietnamese patients with autosomal recessive bestrophinopathy. Methods: This retrospective and cross-sectional study included individuals diagnosed with autosomal recessive bestrophinopathy at the Eye Clinic, Vietnam National Geriatric Hospital between May 2024 and April 2025. The patients underwent a visual acuity assessment, retinal multimodal imaging, and molecular testing through BEST1 gene sequencing. Results: Nine patients from seven unrelated families were included. The mean age was 38.6 years (range: 14.1–79.6). Visual acuity ranged from 20/20 to 20/125. All patients showed vitelliform lesions, subretinal deposits, and both intraretinal and subretinal fluid. Other main features included diffuse macular hyperfluorescence and hyperopia. Less common clinical features encompassed glaucoma, retinoschisis, outer retinal thinning, serous retinal detachment, retinal thickening, and thinning of the retinal pigment epithelium. Compound heterozygous or homozygous variants were detected in all patients. Among the five identified BEST1 variants, the most frequent were p.(A195V) and p.(R200*). One novel variant, p.(K289*), was detected. Conclusions: The main clinical retinal features of nine Vietnamese patients with autosomal recessive bestrophinopathy included vitelliform lesions, subretinal deposits, retinal fluid, and diffuse macular hyperfluorescence. The most common variants were p.(A195V) and p.(R200*). Additionally, the identification of various compound heterozygotes and a novel BEST1 variant expands the mutation spectrum of the disease. The present study investigates Vietnam’s economic structural transformation from 2007 to 2023, identifying key sectors contributing to output growth and poverty reduction. The study is situated within the broader context of industrialization and sustainable development in emerging economies. It employs structural decomposition analysis using Vietnam’s national input–output tables for the years 2007, 2011, 2015, 2019, and 2023. The analysis decomposes changes in total output into technical effects and final demand effects, allowing for an evaluation of the relative contributions of sectoral productivity and demand side factors. The findings of the study indicate that the manufacturing and services sectors have been the primary drivers of economic growth, with the electrical and optical equipment, food, beverages and tobacco, and basic metals sectors demonstrating particularly strong performance. The factor of final demand, which is derived from consumption, investment, and exports, has played a dominant role in driving output. Notably, export-led manufacturing has experienced significant benefits due to Vietnam’s engagement in free trade agreements. It is noteworthy that the agriculture sector demonstrated a period of recovery between 2019 and 2023, driven by an increase in final demand. This study underscores the pivotal function of sectoral adaptability, trade openness, and strategic policy in maintaining inclusive economic development. It is evident that the phenomenon under scrutiny is not only indicative of vulnerabilities and opportunities but also shaped by global shocks, for example, the coronavirus pandemic. Full article

Spondylocostal dysostosis (SCDO) is a group of rare genetic disorders characterized by segmental vertebral defects and rib deformities due to congenital misalignment, fusion, or reduction in the number of ribs. The causes of the disease have been found in seven genes, including DLL3 (SCDO1, OMIM 602768), MESP2 (SCDO2, OMIM 608681), LFNG (SCDO3, OMIM 609813), HES7 (SCDO4, OMIM 608059), TBX6 (SCDO5, OMIM 602427), RIPPLY2 (SCDO6, OMIM 616566), and DLL1 (SCDO7). Among these, SCDO4, characterized by a short trunk, short neck, and mild nonprogressive scoliosis, is a rare form of reported cases. SCDO4 is identified as caused by homozygous or compound heterozygous variants in the HES7 gene (NM_001165967.2; NP_001159439.1). This study reports a novel homozygous HES7 splice variant (c.43-9T>A) detected in an SCDO4 patient by whole-exome sequencing and confirmed by Sanger sequencing. This variant was evaluated as an acceptor loss variant in intron 1 in the HES7 transcript by in silico analysis and was inherited from the patient’s parent. This study also reviews previous reports to provide a comprehensive overview of SCDO and help us to understand the pathogenesis to develop future treatment strategies. Full article

Taguchi and post-heat treatment methods have been used in this study to optimize the metal inert gas (MIG) welding joints between SUS304 austenite stainless steel and plain carbon SS400 steel using AWS ER 308L filler wire. The dissimilar welding joints’ microstructure and tensile strength have been examined. The findings show that the fast cooling of the weld joint and the ferrite-forming element of the filler wire cause the dendrites’ δ-ferrite phase to emerge on both the weld bead and the heat-affected zone (HAZ) of the SUS304 side. The stickout parameter has the largest impact on the ultimate tensile strength (UTS), next to the welding speed, welding voltage, and welding current, due to the strong impact of the heat distribution. The optimal welding parameters are a welding current of 105 A, a welding voltage of 14.5 V, a stickout of 12 mm, and a welding speed of 420 mm/min, producing the UTS value of 445.3 MPa, which is close to the predicted value of 469.2 ± 53.6 MPa. Post-heat treatment with an annealing temperature that is lower than 700 °C could improve the optimized weld joints’ strength by up to 5%. The findings may provide a more realistic understanding of the dissimilar welding technology. Full article

Conventional applications of the Galvanostatic Intermittent Titration Technique (GITT) and EIS for estimating chemical diffusivity in battery electrodes face issues such as insufficient relaxation time to reach equilibrium, excessively long pulse durations that violate the short-time diffusion assumption, and the assumption of sequential electrode reaction and diffusion processes. In this work, a quasi-equilibrium criterion of 0.1 mV h−1 was applied to NMC622 electrodes, yielding 8–9 h relaxations below 3.8 V, but above 3.8 V, voltage decayed linearly and indefinitely, even upon discharging titration, showing unusual nonmonotonic relaxation behavior. The initial 36-s transients of a 10-min galvanostatic pulse and diffusion impedance in series with the electrode reaction yielded consistent diffusivity values. However, solid-state diffusion in spherical active particles within porous electrodes, where ambipolar diffusion occurs in the pore electrolyte with t+=0.3, requires a physics-based three-rail transmission line model (TLM). The corrected diffusivity may be three to four times higher. An analytic two-rail TLM approximating the three-rail numerical model was applied to temperature- and frequency-dependent EIS data. This approach mitigates parameter ambiguity and unphysical correlations in EIS. Physics-based EIS enables the identification of multistep energetics and the diagnosis of performance and degradation mechanisms. Full article

This study explores the contemporary relevance of Confucian educational thought in the context of Vietnam’s ongoing educational reform. It examines how foundational Confucian principles—particularly those related to moral cultivation, pedagogical methods, and the role of the learner—can be adapted to align with modern educational objectives. Employing a qualitative, comparative methodology, the research analyzes classical Confucian texts, historical records, and current Vietnamese education policy documents, alongside Humboldtian liberal ideals. The findings demonstrate that Confucian values such as benevolence (ren), ritual propriety (li), and exemplary moral conduct continue to offer meaningful frameworks for promoting ethical development and civic responsibility. Pedagogical techniques, including heuristic questioning, modeling, and situational teaching, remain relevant to modern goals like critical thinking and learner autonomy. While some critiques highlight limitations in Confucianism’s hierarchical structure or insufficient scientific orientation, this study also incorporates existing research showing that Confucian education—particularly across East Asia—has been positively associated with fostering students’ creativity and critical thinking. This paper distinguishes itself by proposing a hybrid model that critically adapts Confucian pedagogy in conjunction with Humboldtian liberalism to enhance both moral grounding and cognitive autonomy in Vietnamese education. The research concludes that a critically integrative approach can support Vietnam in building a culturally grounded, morally resilient, and globally competitive education system. Full article

Background/Objectives: Children with congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH) face significant risks of impaired growth and metabolic disturbances despite standard glucocorticoid therapy. This cross-sectional study aimed to evaluate growth outcomes, nutritional status, and associated factors among children with CAH treated in a Vietnamese tertiary pediatric center. Methods: We assessed 201 children aged 1.1–16.5 years in a tertiary pediatric center in Vietnam for anthropometric parameters, biochemical markers (calcium, phosphate, 25-hydroxyvitamin D), and clinical features. Growth status was evaluated using WHO standards, and bone age was assessed radiographically. Statistical analyses explored associations between growth outcomes and clinical, biochemical, and treatment-related factors. Results: Stunting was present in 16.4% of children, while 53.3% were overweight or obese. Bone age advancement occurred in 51.7% of cases. Vitamin D insufficiency or deficiency was detected in 85.6% of patients, and hypocalcemia was present in 85.1%. Overweight/obesity, vitamin D deficiency, and bone age advancement were associated with older age, prolonged corticosteroid therapy, higher androgen levels, and clinical features of treatment imbalance (e.g., Cushingoid appearance, hyperpigmentation). Female sex was significantly associated with higher rates of stunting. Conclusions: Growth impairment, nutritional deficiencies, and skeletal maturation disturbances are prevalent among children with CAH in Vietnam. Early identification of risk factors and the implementation of tailored management strategies that address both endocrine and nutritional health are crucial for optimizing long-term outcomes. Wound healing remains a significant clinical challenge worldwide, and effective management strategies are essential for improving outcomes. This study evaluated SCderm Matrix, a novel acellular dermal matrix (ADM) patch developed using supercritical carbon dioxide (sCO2) processing of human skin tissue. This innovative processing method preserves structural integrity while enhancing biocompatibility, resulting in a patch characterized by porous architecture, uniform thickness, excellent tensile strength, and optical transparency. In vivo wound healing experiments using full-thickness skin wounds in Sprague–Dawley rats demonstrated the patch’s superior performance. Treatment with the sCO2 ADM patch accelerated wound closure, reduced inflammation, and enhanced granulation tissue formation compared to both untreated controls and two commercially available ADM products. Histological analysis revealed improved re-epithelialization and collagen deposition, while molecular and immunohistochemical assessments showed decreased reactive oxygen species (ROS) and pro-inflammatory cytokines. Simultaneously, the treatment upregulated key proliferation and remodeling markers including alpha smooth muscle actin (α-SMA), vimentin, and transforming growth factor beta 1 (TGF-β1). These findings demonstrate that the SCderm Matrix promotes wound healing through multiple mechanisms: modulating inflammatory responses, enhancing antioxidant defenses, and supporting tissue regeneration. The results suggest this biomaterial has significant potential as an effective and versatile solution for clinical wound care applications. Full article

This paper aims to conduct a rational statistical approach to evaluate the current situation of surface water quality in the Mekong Delta, applying Factor Analysis (FA), Principal Component Analysis (PCA), and Agglomerative Hierarchical Clustering (AHC) to a database of 3117 samples collected by national and provincial monitoring stations. The results revealed significant contamination with organic pollutants (BOD5: 3.50–172.870 mg/L, COD: 6.493–472.984 mg/L), pesticides (e.g., DDTs: n.d to 1.227 mg/L), trace metals (As: 0.006–0.046 mg/L, Cr: n.d–1.960 mg/L), and microbial indicators (Coliforms: n.d–45,100 MPN/100 mL), often higher than the WHO drinking water threshold. PCA/AHC analysis identified the following five major pollution components: (1) organic pollution and sewage/industrial and deposited chemicals (PCA1—23.08% variance); (2) pesticide and agricultural runoff derived contamination with Hg (PCA2—15.44%); (3) microbial pollution of the water was found to correlate positively with Zn and Cu content (PCA3—8.90%); (4) salinity was found to mobilize As and Cr (PCA4—8.00%); (5) nutrient/microbial pollution presumably from agricultural and sewage inputs (PCA5—7.22%). AHC showed some spatial variability that grouped samples in urban/industrial (Cluster 1), rural/agricultural (Cluster 2), and a highly contaminated one, where water was toxic and presented with microbial and Cd contamination (Cluster 3). Levels of pesticides, Cr, and microbial pollution were higher than reported in previous Mekong Delta studies and exceeded regional trends. These results emphasize the importance of holistic water management strategies, including better wastewater treatment, pesticide control, sustainable farming, and climate-adaptive measures to reduce saltwater intrusion and safeguard drinking water quality for the Mekong Delta. Environmental monitoring is essential to assess and, if possible, anticipate the consequences of various marine economic developments. This study describes progress in environmental monitoring by developing and applying a eutrophication index (EI) for marine protected areas (MPAs). The EI combines available data, such as biological oxygen demands, dissolved inorganic nitrogen and phosphorus, and chlorophyll-a, with the weighting factors calculated from principal component analysis to assess environmental quality. Its effectiveness was tested using nearly three decades of environmental data (since 1996) from the Nha Trang MPA in Vietnam. The EI revealed clear trends in environmental quality. In the period 1996–2006, environmental conditions deteriorated, negatively impacting aquaculture. In the later period, 2007–2024, improved environmental protection policies, technological developments, expanding tourism, and heightened public awareness contributed to a reversal of this trend. During the earlier period, the EI indicated poor environmental quality (Level V), while in the later years, it improved significantly, approaching Level II. This study also identified the spatial eutrophication patterns and helped to determine the causes of specific eutrophication levels. These included port development, aquaculture activities, and domestic waste discharge. These findings highlight the close relationship between environmental quality and economic activities in the bay. Overall, the new EI and its sensitivity maps enhance environmental monitoring capabilities. They provide valuable tools for decision-makers, aiding in the strategic planning of marine economic development, ecosystem protection, and sustainable resource use. The approach supports long-term environmental stewardship and more informed, adaptive management of coastal and marine areas. Full article

Perception and Adoption of Food Safety Standards: A Case of VietGAP Sheep Farmers in the Ninh Thuan Province of Vietnam

To facilitate the adoption of a food safety standard by producers, it is essential to understand their perception of it. However, few empirical studies have examined how livestock farmers perceive food safety standards in Vietnam. This research examines sheep farmers’ attitudes towards Vietnamese Good Agricultural Practices (VietGAP), a type of a food safety standard in Vietnam. A sample size of 109 farmers was selected for interviews and a structured questionnaire was generated to collect data. Descriptive and bivariate analyses were employed. The study results show that sheep farmers were well aware of most VietGAP requirements. They perceived that adopting VietGAP requires practical changes in sheep farming systems, including: selecting breeding stock from clear sources to ensure sheep product traceability, collecting and treating wastes daily to protect the environment, and frequent sterilization of sheep cages. The farmers were changing several practices to comply with VietGAP. Key changed practices identified included: bought breeding stock from clear and reliable sources, frequent collecting and treating of sheep wastes, and used veterinary medicine according to instructions of veterinary medicine producers. Statistically significant relationships existing between the sheep farmers’ perceptions and their education level (Pearson = 0.229, p = 0.017), farm size (Pearson = −0.193; p = 0.049), gender (Eta = 0.173, p = 0.060), practice of using labours (Eta = 0.202, p = 0.028), training participation (Eta = 0.211, p = 0.022), credit participation (Eta = 0.177, p = 0.050), community-based organisations (Eta = 0.153, p = 0.087), and veterinary/extension contacts (Eta = 0.217, p = 0.019) were found. This means that a male sheep farmer who had a higher education level, possessed a smaller farm, practiced hired labours, participated in training/credit programs, was a member of community-based organisation, and had contacts with veterinary/extension workers likely perceived VietGAP better than their counterparts. Based on the findings of this study, it is recommended that the promotion of VietGAP for livestock farmers should be developed and carried out as joint attempts along the value chain actors. New food marketing practices and legal framework and policy for using safe food certifications are required to address to promote farmers’ adoption of VietGAP and facilitate transition towards a sustainable agri-food system in Vietnam. This study provides significant insights into safety food standard adoption by livestock farmers and highlights aspects that require to be considered when developing policies to improve the adoption of safety food standards in developing countries. Objective: This study aimed to assess the prevalence of depression and anxiety among patients with acute leukemia in Vietnam and to identify associated sociodemographic and clinical factors. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted at the Hematology and Blood Transfusion Center of Bach Mai Hospital, a national tertiary care facility in Hanoi, Vietnam. A total of 82 patients diagnosed with acute leukemia were recruited using a convenience sampling method. Data on sociodemographic characteristics (e.g., age, gender, residence, education, occupation, marital status, and income) and clinical information (e.g., leukemia type, treatment stage, comorbidities, substance use) were collected. Depression and anxiety were assessed using the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) and Zung’s Self-Rating Anxiety Scale (SAS). Multivariate logistic and Tobit regression analyses were applied to explore associated factors. Results: Participants had a mean age of 43.4 years (SD = 14.0), with 53.7% male and 69.5% residing in rural areas. Most were married (82.9%) and had completed high school (45.1%). Farmers constituted the largest occupational group (29.3%). The mean BDI score was 13.7 (SD = 9.8), and the mean SAS score was 39.2 (SD = 6.3). Overall, 50.0% of patients met criteria for depression, while 26.8% exhibited clinically significant anxiety symptoms. Among those with anxiety, 59.1% had mild symptoms, 22.7% moderate, and 18.2% severe or very severe. Patients with education above high school (OR = 7.32; 95% CI: 1.01–53.23), a spouse (OR = 25.10; 95% CI: 2.14–294.55), or comorbidities (OR = 8.05; 95% CI: 1.63–39.68) had significantly higher odds of depression. A higher income (>10 million VND/month) was associated with lower depression scores (Coef. = −6.05; 95% CI: −11.65 to −0.46). Regarding anxiety, the female gender was associated with higher odds (OR = 3.80; 95% CI: 1.21–11.93) and SAS scores (Coef. = 4.07; 95% CI: 1.64–6.51), while higher income predicted lower anxiety severity (Coef. = −3.74; 95% CI: −6.57 to −0.91). Conclusions: This Vietnamese hospital-based study highlights a high prevalence of depression and anxiety among patients with acute leukemia. Routine mental health screening and culturally appropriate psychosocial interventions are strongly recommended to improve patient well being. Full article

Canine distemper virus (CDV) is a highly contagious pathogen and causes a fatal systemic disease in domestic dogs and wild carnivores worldwide. Despite CDV infections being monitored globally, studies on CDV in Vietnam seem to be limited. This study, therefore, investigated the epidemiological, clinical, and molecular characteristics of CDV in the Mekong Delta (MD) region of Vietnam. A total of 6687 ocular/nasal swabs were collected from CDV-suspected dogs across seven cities/provinces. CDV infection was detected in 6.19% (414 dogs) of suspected dogs using a commercially available rapid kit, with infection associated with age, roaming status, and vaccination status. Hematological and blood biochemical analysis of CDV-infected dogs revealed anemia, leukopenia, neutrophilia, thrombocytopenia, a slight increase in aspartate aminotransferase (AST) levels, and a significant increase in blood urea nitrogen (BUN) levels. Molecular characterization of partial hemagglutinin (H) and fusion (F) genes exhibited high nucleotide and amino acid homology with the Asia-1 genotype. Phylogenetic analysis confirmed that the field sequences were clustered into the Asia-1 genotype together with the neighboring countries. These findings provide important insights into the current epidemiological, clinical, and molecular features of CDV circulating in Vietnam. Full article
