Dear Colleagues,
Electric vehicles (EVs) are indispensable for reducing carbon emissions and supporting the transition towards a cleaner and more sustainable environment. Since 2010, the deployment of EVs has increased exponentially, leading to a significant rise in electricity demand from the power grid. This additional load has introduced challenges related to power quality, grid reliability, and infrastructure capacity. At the same time, range anxiety and charging accessibility remain key barriers to the widespread adoption of battery electric vehicles (BEVs).
In parallel, hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs) are emerging as a complementary zero-emission transport solution, particularly for heavy-duty transport and long-distance applications where rapid refueling and extended driving range are advantageous. However, their large-scale deployment also depends on the development of efficient hydrogen production, storage, transportation, refueling infrastructure, and integration with renewable energy systems.
Considering the global climate challenge, electricity and hydrogen produced from renewable energy sources are becoming increasingly important for achieving sustainable transportation. The expansion of charging and hydrogen refueling infrastructure at homes, workplaces, public locations, and highways will significantly improve user confidence and accelerate the adoption of both battery electric and hydrogen-powered vehicles. Consequently, the successful integration of millions of zero-emission vehicles into the transport sector will require increased renewable energy penetration, modernization of grid infrastructure, advancements in battery technologies and battery management systems, and the development of hydrogen production and storage technologies, smart charging and smart refueling strategies, as well as effective utilization of energy storage systems.
This Special Issue therefore invites original research articles and comprehensive review papers covering, but not limited to, the following topics:
- Battery electric vehicles (BEVs) and hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs);
- EV charging technologies and hydrogen refueling infrastructure;
- Batteries, fuel cells, supercapacitors, and hybrid energy storage systems;
- Battery management systems and hydrogen storage technologies;
- Smart charging, vehicle-to-grid (V2G), and energy management strategies;
- Renewable energy integration for EV charging and green hydrogen production;
- Planning, optimization, and deployment of charging and hydrogen refueling stations;
- The impact of EV charging and hydrogen infrastructure on distribution networks;
- Grid reliability, power quality, and flexibility;
- Artificial intelligence, digital twins, and optimization techniques for sustainable transportation;
- Policies, economics, lifecycle assessment, and decarbonization of transport systems.

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process.
