Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
Mycotoxins are harmful fungal secondary metabolites that pose a significant threat to global food and feed security. They are either produced by fungi infesting harvested crops and other food commodities (cheese, sausage, etc.) during storage or by phytopathogenic fungi infecting crop plants already in the field. The ecological roles of such metabolites are not entirely clear. In the case of plant–pathogen interactions, they are often considered to be virulence factors, and may further function to protect the producing fungi against microbial competitors, mycoparasitic fungi, and animal fungivores (such as slugs, insects, nematodes, etc.). Studying the mechanisms of resistance to mycotoxins is necessary to understanding the interactions between affected organisms with toxigenic fungi, and is also crucial to identify novel strategies for mycotoxin detoxification.
This Special Issue, ‘Mycotoxin Resistance’, will explore the multifaceted nature of mycotoxin resistance within the context of food safety and security. We invite contributions from scientists investigating mechanisms of mycotoxin resistance in plants and their role in plant–pathogen interactions, especially the ways in which they potentially contribute to fungus resistance in the respective crop plant. Likewise, we also welcome research on the molecular mechanisms of mycotoxin resistance in animals or humans and detoxification reactions in antagonistic microorganisms, fungivores, and organisms consuming plant debris with high mycotoxin levels. Mechanisms enabling toxigenic fungi to remain resistant to their own toxins are of further interest.
We invite submissions of original research papers and review articles. Reviews should not just be simple compilations of the existing literature, covering a given topic in a descriptive and general manner; instead, reviews should critically summarize recent progress in a particular field by emphasizing controversies and open questions. In addition, opinion papers presenting suggestions for further research are encouraged.

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a double-blind peer-review process. Toxins is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
