Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

With societies becoming increasingly diverse in recent years, tourism planning, design, and management have called for greater inclusivity and accessibility. To achieve this, tourism must offer equitable experiences that will respect and accommodate the needs of all travelers, regardless of their age, gender, physical ability, cultural background, or socio-economic status.

Although there have been global advancements in tourism development and innovation (including the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals), millions of people from across the world still face physical, cultural, or financial barriers that limit their ability to fully travel. Inclusive and accessible tourism is not just a matter of infrastructure or policy; it is a human rights imperative and a key driver of sustainable tourism development.

This Special Issue, “Inclusive and Accessible Tourism: Strategies for Equitable Experiences”, aims to explore the multidimensional aspects of inclusive and accessible tourism through critical, interdisciplinary, and practice-based perspectives. We seek theoretical, empirical, and methodological research that advances the discourse on equitable access and inclusive travel experiences for all, including both original research and review articles.

We particularly encourage the submission of papers that investigate the intersection of tourism with accessibility innovations, social inclusion policies, assistive technology and inclusive service design. Additionally, we welcome contributions that analyze the impact of digital transformation on accessibility in tourism and those exploring the travel experiences and needs of underrepresented or marginalized groups.

This Special Issue hopes to highlight pathways through which the tourism industry can become more responsive and inclusive, both during the travel experience itself and within the wider societal framework.
