Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
Symmetry and asymmetry are foundational concepts in mechanical engineering, influencing structural integrity, heat transfer, and fluid flow dynamics across a wide range of applications. Symmetrical configurations are often sought for their inherent balance, structural stability, and uniform flow and thermal distribution, enabling improvements in mechanical performance. On the other hand, asymmetrical designs can also be a powerful design tool that can help the systems with unique advantages, such as directional heat spreading, fluid dynamics control, or anisotropic material responses. It opens up opportunities for engineering systems that can benefit from the strategic use of symmetry and asymmetry to satisfy demanding performance criteria.
This Special Issue aims to consolidate cutting-edge research on the role of symmetry and asymmetry in mechanical engineering. We seek original contributions that explore theoretical insights, experimental findings, and computational modeling related to symmetry and asymmetry applied to mechanical engineering problems. Research articles, review articles, and short communications are all welcome. The scope ranges from the micro- to macro-scale, covering fundamental transport phenomena and advanced engineering applications.
Topics of interest include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Fundamental transport phenomena;
- Energy systems and applications;
- Fluid mechanics and multiphase systems;
- Advanced and functional materials;
- Structural mechanics and system behavior;
- Computational and experimental methods.
We look forward to your valuable contributions.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Symmetry is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2400 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
