Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
Renewable energy sources have become a competitive and environmentally friendly approach to meeting the power demand all over the world. However, due to their intermittent functionality, it is generally difficult to incorporate renewable sources. Multi-energy complementary systems and energy storage technologies are indispensable components in the transition to sustainable power systems. Examples of multi-energy complementary systems include solar power, wind power, hydropower, thermal power systems, and biomass power, among others. The coupling of multi-energy complementary and energy storage technologies can balance local microgrids. Integrating on-site renewables and distributed energy resources as well as public utility grids would not only achieve stable power generation, but also reduce the demand for the utility grid.
In this Special Issue, we encourage submissions of original research articles, case studies, reviews, critical perspectives, and viewpoint articles on topics including, but not limited to, the following:
- Experimental investigations on multi-energy complementary systems;
- Energy storage options for multiple scenarios;
- Spatial-temporal complementary system designs;
- Case studies to summarize best practices;
- System design considering feasibility;
- Process modeling and simulation;
- System optimization, including models and algorithms for design and operation optimization in multi-energy complementary systems;
- Load estimation methods and algorithms;
- Control of multi-energy complementary systems;
- Evaluation system for multi-energy complementary systems during operation;
- Techno-economic assessment and lifecycle analysis;
- Energy storage technologies;
- Trend prediction of multi-energy complementary systems with respect to their environmental impact, market effects and utilization;
- Policy incentives for regional deployment, etc.
We look forward to receiving your contributions.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Sustainability is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2400 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
