Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

In today's rapidly evolving economic landscape, the integration of sustainability into business practices is more crucial than ever, and the importance of evaluating and improving the environmental performance and efficiency of enterprises cannot be overstated. Governments around the world are increasingly implementing stringent environmental regulations and standards; consumers are becoming more environmentally conscious and prefer to support companies that demonstrate a commitment to sustainability; and investors are increasingly looking at environmental, social, and governance criteria when making investment decisions because companies with strong environmental performance are often viewed as lower-risk investments and attract more capital. The global push towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030 and the European Green Deal, which aims to make the EU climate-neutral by 2050, emphasizes the role of businesses in promoting sustainability.

We must focus on the critical examination of how enterprises can enhance their environmental performance and efficiency to develop innovative strategies, technological advancements, and comprehensive methodologies that contribute to sustainable business practices while emphasizing economic impacts and opportunities. By addressing the multifaceted challenges and opportunities involved in improving environmental performance, this Special Issue will provide actionable insights and foster a deeper understanding of sustainable enterprise management. The development of organizational strategies to achieve the objectives for environmental performance and marketing strategies to improve the level of competitiveness are important directions in the context of the environmental audit and the evaluation of a company's efficiency.

This Special Issue invites both original research articles and reviews, aiming to bridge the gap between economic theory and practical implementation, and papers may focus on a variety of topics, including innovative strategies and technologies for improving environmental performance, comprehensive methodologies for assessing efficiency, and the economic benefits of sustainable practices.

Research topics may focus on (but are not limited to) enhancing environmental performance and efficiency within enterprises, emphasizing economic impacts and opportunities, with particular emphasis on the following:

  • Economic strategies for climate action;
  • Sustainable urban development and its economic impacts;
  • Circular economy and resource efficiency;
  • Agricultural economics and sustainable practices;
  • Environmental economics and biodiversity conservation;
  • Renewable energy economics;
  • Sustainable industrial practices and innovation;
  • Water and waste economics and sustainable management;
  • Health economics and environmental health;
  • Education for sustainable economic growth;
  • Strategic management and environmental performance;
  • Marketing environment audit.

We look forward to receiving your contributions, which will significantly advance our collective understanding of and firms’ implementation of sustainable business practices, aligning with global sustainability goals and enhancing the economic resilience of enterprises.

This study examines the relationship between tourists’ level of perceived safety in Thailand and their future behavioral intentions to revisit Thailand in a post-COVID-19 context. Moreover, the study also examines the moderating role of a destination’s image and the mediating effects of perceived constraints on the relationship of tourists’ perceived safety and their future behavioral intentions. The aim of this study is to fill gap in the literature regarding the impact of safety perceptions on future sustainable travel intentions. For this purpose, a cross-sectional research design was used, and data were collected through purposive sampling. Structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) was employed to analyze the data. A total of 219 tourists participated in the study, of which 122 were male and 97 were female. The results revealed a positive association between perceived safety and future behavioral intentions. Moreover, the moderating effect of a destination’s image on the relationship between perceived safety and future behavioral intentions was found to be positive. Additionally, the mediating role of perceived constraint in the relationship between perceived safety and future behavioral intentions exhibited a negative effect. While no significant gender differences were observed in most variables, perceived constraints differed significantly between male and female tourists. These results underscore the crucial roles of safety and a destination’s image in influencing tourists’ future travel decisions. By emphasizing safety and positive destination imagery, the findings contribute to sustainable tourism development by promoting long-term visitor engagement, enhancing destination resilience, and supporting the socio-economic recovery of tourism-dependent communities. An orientation towards strengthening the competitiveness of enterprises through an effective response to market expectations is nowadays associated with sustainable development. Despite the articulation of the role of innovative solutions in this respect, the literature has not sufficiently explored this issue. Hence, the aim of the article was to analyse the impact of innovation on the sustainable development of enterprises in the pharmaceutical sector operating in the market in Poland. For the purposes of this study, the scope and spectrum of reference for innovative solutions in pharmaceutical entities was diagnosed based on the results of a diagnostic survey. In part of the in-depth study, an assessment of the impact of innovation on the sustainable development of the surveyed enterprises was conducted. The above was performed using appropriately selected methods of a qualitative and quantitative nature, including economic analytical techniques (cause-effect analysis, dependency analysis). The research sample was made up of companies operating on the pharmaceutical market in Poland; therefore, the results of the research refer only to these entities and there are no grounds for transferring them to the general population of enterprises in this sector in the country under study. This paper’s findings indicate that the idea of creating added value, growing out of a broad concern for social, environmental and economic aspects, is determined by an innovative approach that enhances environmental security, responding to societal expectations, while at the same time aiming to maximise the economic impact on activities. Companies that invest more heavily in innovation achieve better results in sustainable development, as confirmed by research. Companies are aware of this and are directing development expenditure into solutions that strengthen their ability to respond effectively to market expectations, with the strongest implementation of the above based on product innovation. This study examines the impacts of women’s social, political, and psychological empowerment on their participation in civil societies and further its impacts on their entrepreneurial resilience. This study employed the quantitative approach, and data were collected through surveys, which were later analyzed with Smart PLS 4. This study’s findings revealed mixed results. The impacts of psychological and social empowerment on women’s participation in civil societies and their entrepreneurial resilience were significant. The impacts of political empowerment on women’s participation in civil societies and their entrepreneurial resilience were insignificant. The occurrence of disasters is common in tourist destinations, and several studies have investigated it. However, the study on the ripple impacts of disasters on women has not been thoroughly investigated, specifically in the Asian context. Full article
