Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

In recent years, the concept of green destinations has gained increasing relevance in both research and policy, as tourism destinations face growing pressures related to climate change, environmental degradation, and the need to ensure long-term sustainability. Green destination management is increasingly recognized as a strategic approach for guiding tourism development toward being more responsible and resilient, based on resource-efficient models. This Special Issue aims to explore how green destination management can advance sustainable tourism by integrating environmental, socio-economic, and governance perspectives. It invites contributions that examine innovative strategies, policies, and practices for planning, managing, and evaluating tourism destinations in alignment with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Topics of interest include eco-certification, sustainability assessment tools, resource efficiency, community engagement, climate resilience, and the socio-economic benefits of sustainable tourism.

The purpose of this Special Issue is to provide a platform for research that bridges theory and practice, offering evidence-based insights for policymakers, destination managers, and stakeholders. By emphasizing holistic approaches and measurable outcomes, this Special Issue will supplement the existing literature, which often addresses environmental, economic, or social aspects in isolation. Contributions will highlight practical solutions, innovative management practices, and policy frameworks that support sustainable development, helping destinations to balance environmental protection, economic growth, and social well-being.

This Special Issue aligns with Sustainability’s mission to address contemporary challenges in sustainable development, offering integrated approaches, actionable strategies, and measurable contributions to advance tourism sustainability globally. By focusing on the transition toward greener and more resilient tourism destinations, the Special Issue responds to the increasing demand for sustainable tourism policies and practices at both global and regional levels.

The Landscape of Outstanding Features of “Islands and Cliffs near Slankamen” (ICS) is a protected area in the Danube region, characterized by diverse forest and wetland habitats. Different forms of sustainable tourism (SUTO) can be developed in this area, including nature-based tourism, ecotourism, and scientific tourism. This study aims to examine the impact of SUTO dimensions on residents’ satisfaction in the settlements of Stari Slankamen and Novi Slankamen. The research is based on the Prism of Sustainability (PoS) model, which includes ecological, economic, socio-cultural, and institutional dimensions. A total of 1030 inhabitants participated in the survey. The results show that all four dimensions have a statistically significant impact on residents’ satisfaction. The economic and institutional dimensions have a stronger influence, while the socio-cultural and ecological dimensions were evaluated more positively by respondents. The results indicate the need for better coordination of tourism development and management activities in order to achieve a balance between nature protection, economic benefits, and the needs of the local community.
