Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Environmental monitoring plays a crucial role in addressing global challenges, including climate change, air and water pollution, ecosystem degradation, and sustainable resource management. Recent advances in sensing technologies, microelectronics, wireless communication, and data processing have enabled the development of smart sensing systems capable of continuous, distributed, and real-time observation of environmental parameters. These systems are increasingly deployed in heterogeneous scenarios, ranging from urban environments and industrial sites to remote and resource-constrained locations.

At the same time, the growing demand for large-scale monitoring networks poses significant challenges in terms of power consumption, reliability, scalability, data quality, and long-term autonomy. Emerging solutions leverage low-power electronics, embedded intelligence, edge computing, energy harvesting, and advanced communication protocols to overcome these limitations. The integration of hardware, firmware, and system-level design is therefore a key enabler for next-generation environmental sensing platforms.

This Special Issue aims to present and disseminate recent advances in smart sensing systems for environmental monitoring, with a particular focus on integrated, low-power, and application-oriented solutions. We invite original research articles and reviews addressing the design, implementation, and deployment of sensing systems that combine sensors, electronics, communication, and data processing for environmental applications.

Topics of interest for this Special Issue include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Smart sensor nodes and embedded sensing platforms for environmental monitoring
  • Low-power and ultra-low-power sensor electronics
  • Wireless sensor networks and IoT solutions for environmental sensing
  • Energy harvesting and autonomous sensing systems
  • Signal conditioning, data acquisition, and edge processing for environmental sensors
  • Calibration, reliability, and long-term stability of environmental sensing systems

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Sensors is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2600 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
