Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

In recent years, artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) have become pivotal drivers of digital transformation, with computer vision and image processing standing at the forefront of intelligent sensing technologies. Modern intelligent sensor-based systems increasingly integrate advanced imaging hardware (e.g., high-resolution cameras, hyperspectral, depth and event-based sensors) with AI/ML frameworks, edge computing and neuromorphic engineering. These systems are designed to capture, interpret and act upon visual information, effectively mimicking or surpassing human visual perception in accuracy and operational speed.

Despite the rapid advancement of vision-based sensing, the field faces critical challenges, particularly in handling massive visual datasets, ensuring real-time computational efficiency, maintaining model robustness under varying environmental conditions and seamlessly fusing visual data with other sensor modalities. Addressing these bottlenecks is essential for scaling intelligent vision systems across diverse sectors. This Special Issue aims to explore cutting-edge image processing techniques and vision algorithms tailored for intelligent sensor-based systems. We encourage submissions that demonstrate how advanced image analysis methods are being applied to solve complex, real-world problems beyond traditional domains.

Potential topics include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Advanced image processing for intelligent sensors
  • Vision Sensors and Image Processing: Applications in security, navigation, robotics and automation
  • Multimodal image fusion and cross-sensor alignment
  • Real-time and edge-based image processing
  • Vision sensors and event-based cameras
  • Biomedical image processing (including biomedicine and bioinformatics)
  • Agricultural and environmental image analysis (including crop monitoring, sorting systems, food safety and remote sensing)
  • Explainable AI for computer vision in sensing applications

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Sensors is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2600 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
