Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Global plastic production exceeds 400 million tonnes annually, with less than 2% being attributed to natural and biobased plastics; however, currently, there is a significant increase in the tendency to replace conventional fossil-based plastics. There is also a growing trend towards alternatives that involve the development of polymer materials derived from natural and renewable sources. A natural or biobased polymer originates from natural or renewable sources, typically derived from biomass, and is recognized for its environmentally friendly characteristics. These kinds of polymer may consist partly or entirely of biobased components, which can include mixtures, composites, copolymers, grafts, additives, or the utilization of natural monomers in its synthesis. The aim being to develop sustainable polymer materials for various applications with a reduced environmental impact and enhanced biodegradability and composting properties.

This Special Issue on “Extraction, Modification, Synthesis, Characterization, and Application of Natural and Biobased Polymer Materials” aims to address recent advances in the development and application of sustainable polymeric materials. Topics include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • The extraction of natural polymers;
  • Methods and processes for natural and biobased polymers;
  • Reinforced polymers using natural fibres, agro-industrial waste, or biomass;
  • Applications of natural and biobased polymer materials;
  • Biodegradable and compostable polymers.

Processes is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
