Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

The increasing generation of municipal, industrial, agricultural, construction, and other waste streams represents a major environmental and technological challenge, while simultaneously providing opportunities for recovering materials, energy, chemicals, and other valuable resources. The transition from conventional waste disposal toward circular and resource-efficient systems requires the development of processing technologies capable of reducing environmental impacts, recovering valuable fractions, and converting residues into secondary raw materials and value-added products.

Recent advances in physical, chemical, thermal, biological, and hybrid processing technologies have uncovered new routes for waste separation, treatment, recycling, and valorization. However, significant challenges remain concerning process efficiency, feedstock variability, energy and resource consumption, product quality, scalability, economic feasibility, and environmental performance. Addressing these challenges requires an integrated process-engineering perspective combining experimental investigation, process design, modeling, optimization, monitoring, and sustainability assessment.

This Special Issue, “Sustainable Resource Recovery and Waste Processing”, aims to present and disseminate recent scientific and technological advances in processes for waste treatment, resource recovery, recycling, and valorization. Particular emphasis is placed on innovative processing routes, process optimization and integration, recovery of secondary resources, and the development of technically and environmentally sustainable solutions supporting circular production systems.

Original research articles, review papers, case studies, and studies combining experimental and computational approaches are welcome. Contributions addressing laboratory-, pilot-, and industrial-scale processes are particularly encouraged.

Topics of interest include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Advanced waste treatment and processing technologies;
  • Separation, sorting, and recovery of valuable materials;
  • Recycling and reuse of industrial and post-consumer residues;
  • Construction, demolition, mineral, and industrial waste processing;
  • Recovery of metals, minerals, nutrients, chemicals, and secondary raw materials;
  • Waste-derived materials and value-added products;
  • Thermal, chemical, biological, and hybrid conversion processes;
  • Waste-to-energy and energy recovery processes;
  • Process modeling, simulation, optimization, and intensification;
  • Artificial intelligence, machine learning, sensing, and automation applied to waste-processing systems;
  • Process monitoring, characterization, and quality control;
  • Life-cycle assessment, environmental performance, and carbon footprint;
  • Techno-economic assessment and process scalability;
  • Industrial symbiosis and circular production systems;
  • Emerging technologies for zero-waste and resource-efficient processing.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Processes is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2400 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
