Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

The escalating presence of emerging organic contaminants—such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), endocrine-disrupting chemicals, and pharmaceutical residues—in water environments poses significant threats to ecosystems and human health. Conventional water treatment methods often fall short in effectively removing these recalcitrant pollutants, necessitating the development of advanced, sustainable, and cost-effective remediation technologies. Among the most promising approaches, advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) and bioremediation technologies have garnered substantial attention for their complementary strengths in mineralizing persistent contaminants and restoring water quality with minimal environmental footprint.

This Special Issue on “Advanced Oxidation and Bioremediation Technologies for Sustainable Water Treatment” aims to showcase cutting-edge research and comprehensive reviews that advance the fundamental understanding and practical application of these technologies. We particularly welcome contributions that explore innovative materials, synergistic mechanisms, process integration, and field-scale implementations for the efficient removal of emerging pollutants from aqueous environments.

Topics include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • The development of novel photocatalysts and other AOPs for contaminant degradation;
  • The enhancement of microbial degradation pathways for recalcitrant pollutants;
  • Functional materials for water treatment;
  • Synergistic environment remediation mechanisms;
  • The application of micro-nanobubbles for thermodynamic modulation and stimulated radical generation in aqueous systems;
  • In situ and ex situ treatment technologies for groundwater remediation;
  • Mechanistic insights and the kinetic modeling of treatment processes.

We seek original research and insightful reviews that contribute to the advancement of sustainable water treatment technologies, bridging the gap between laboratory innovation and real-world environmental applications.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Processes is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2400 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
