Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

The growing urgency of global environmental challenges—including air and water pollution, greenhouse gas emissions, and the depletion of fossil resources—has placed heterogeneous catalysis and functional materials at the forefront of sustainable technology development. Advances in the design, synthesis, and characterization of catalytic and functional materials are essential to accelerate the transition toward cleaner industrial processes and a low-carbon economy.

This Special Issue aims to bring together high-quality original research articles and comprehensive reviews focusing on the development and application of advanced catalytic and functional materials for environmental remediation and sustainable chemical processes. Contributions are welcome across a broad range of topics, including but not limited to:

  • Catalytic oxidation and abatement of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and air pollutants;
  • CO2 capture, utilization, and conversion into value-added products (e.g., fuels, chemicals);
  • Hydrogen production, purification, and storage for clean energy applications;
  • Photocatalytic and electrocatalytic processes for environmental and energy applications;
  • Synthesis and functionalization of zeolites, metal–organic frameworks (MOFs), and porous materials;
  • Carbon-based materials (graphene, biochar, activated carbon) for catalysis and adsorption;
  • Biomass conversion and biorefinery processes toward sustainable fuels and chemicals;
  • Circular economy approaches: waste valorization, catalyst recycling, and green synthesis routes;
  • Advanced characterization techniques applied to catalytic and functional materials;
  • Computational and data-driven approaches in catalytic material design.

We welcome contributions from academia and industry worldwide, addressing both fundamental aspects and applied perspectives. This Special Issue is intended to serve as a multidisciplinary platform for researchers working at the interface of materials science, chemical engineering, environmental engineering, and green chemistry.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Processes is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2400 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
