Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Metal and metalloid contamination remains a major environmental challenge because of the persistence, toxicity, and potential bioaccumulation of these contaminants. Adsorption is widely regarded as an effective strategy for controlling their mobility and removal owing to its high efficiency, operational flexibility, and potential for regeneration and resource recovery.

Despite considerable progress, adsorption processes in real environmental systems remain highly complex. Their performance depends not only on the physicochemical properties of adsorbents, but also on metal speciation, interfacial reactions, and interactions with surrounding environmental components. A deeper understanding of these processes is therefore essential for improving adsorption efficiency, selectivity, stability, and applicability under environmentally relevant conditions. At the same time, advances in materials science, analytical characterization, and process engineering provide new opportunities to translate fundamental understanding into more efficient and sustainable remediation technologies.

This Special Issue, “Advanced Adsorption Processes for Removing Pollutant Metals”, aims to bring together recent advances in the fundamental understanding, material development, and process engineering of adsorption-based technologies for metal pollution control. We welcome the submission of original research articles, reviews, and perspectives that contribute to both mechanistic understanding and practical environmental applications. Topics include, but are not limited to, the following:

Adsorption mechanisms, surface/interfacial chemistry, and metal speciation;
Interactions of pollutant metals with natural organic matter, minerals, coexisting ions, and other environmental components;
Design, functionalization, and characterization of advanced and sustainable adsorbent materials;
Integrated adsorption and advanced oxidation processes for the removal of metals and coexisting organic pollutants;
Adsorbent regeneration, metal recovery, process modelling and optimization, and applications in real environmental systems.

Manuscript Submission Information

Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. Processes is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
