Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Nanostructured drug delivery systems have emerged as powerful platforms for precision therapeutics due to their tunable physicochemical properties, high surface-area-to-volume ratio and capacity for controlled and targeted release. Liposomes, polymeric nanoparticles, micelles, dendrimers and hybrid nanocarriers enable enhanced bioavailability, reduced systemic toxicity and improved therapeutic efficacy.

Despite significant advances in nanomaterial development, the translation of nanoscale drug carriers from laboratory synthesis to clinically relevant and industrially scalable systems remains a major engineering challenge. Critical issues include mass transfer limitations, release kinetics, transport phenomena in complex biological environments, scale-up strategies, process reproducibility, continuous manufacturing and quality-by-design considerations.

This Special Issue aims to provide a focused engineering perspective on nanostructured drug delivery systems, emphasizing mechanistic modeling, process design, system optimization and scalable manufacturing approaches. Contributions that integrate materials development with process systems engineering principles are particularly encouraged.

Suggested topics include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Transport phenomena in nanostructured drug carriers
  • Modeling and simulation of drug-release kinetics
  • Process design and scale-up of nanoparticle production
  • Microfluidic and continuous manufacturing of liposomes and nanoparticles
  • Quality-by-design and process control strategies

  • Techno-economic analysis of nanosystem manufacturing
  • Regulatory-oriented process validation approaches

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. Processes is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
