Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
Mitochondria are integral to maintaining metabolic processes and redox balance. Dysregulated mitochondrial function and excessive production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) contribute to the pathogenesis of a wide spectrum of diseases, motivating interest in interventions that preserve mitochondrial integrity. Plant-derived bioactive compounds and whole botanical extracts are prospective candidates for such interventions owing to their antioxidant, bioenergetic, and signalling-modulatory properties.
This Special Issue invites original research and comprehensive reviews that define how plant-derived bioactive compounds and well-characterised whole extracts affect mitochondrial bioenergetics, dynamics (fission/fusion), biogenesis, and redox homeostasis. Topics include, but are not limited to, regulation of antioxidant enzymes, modulation of mitochondrial signalling pathways, protection of mitochondrial DNA, and enhancement of cellular stress resilience.
Contributions employing in vitro, in vivo, and clinical approaches are welcome, especially those providing mechanistic insight, structure–activity relationships, comparative analyses of botanical sources, and integrative omics. Methodological advances for reliably assessing mitochondrial function and oxidative stress in the context of phytochemical interventions are also encouraged.
By consolidating multidisciplinary evidence on plant bioactives and mitochondrial health, this Special Issue aims to advance translational understanding of how dietary and therapeutic phytochemicals can modulate redox biology and metabolic function for disease prevention and health promotion.
