Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
The rapid proliferation of cloud services, artificial intelligence, and big data analytics is driving the evolution of data center networks (DCNs), with optical communication technologies playing an increasingly pivotal role. This Special Issue aims to explore the latest advances and innovations in optimizing communication and routing within optical data center networks. We seek original research and comprehensive review articles addressing architectural designs, routing protocols, resource allocation, and network optimization tailored to the unique requirements of optical DCNs. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to, optical switching technologies, hybrid network architectures, traffic engineering, fault tolerance, energy efficiency, and the integration of emerging optical devices. By bringing together contributions from academia and industry, this Special Issue endeavors to foster interdisciplinary collaboration and highlight novel solutions that can significantly improve the performance, scalability, and reliability of future data center networks.
This Special Issue invites manuscripts that introduce the recent advances in “Optimizing Communication and Routing in Optical Data Center Networks”. All theoretical, numerical, and experimental papers are accepted. Topics include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Optical Switching Technologies: Examining the latest developments in optical switching, which enable efficient data routing and traffic management in DCNs.
- Hybrid Network Architectures: Exploring the integration of optical and electronic network components, offering flexibility and scalability to meet the diverse needs of modern DCNs.
- Routing Protocols: Investigating new and improved routing algorithms tailored to the unique requirements of optical DCNs, ensuring low latency, high throughput, and robust network performance.
- Resource Allocation: Addressing the challenges of efficiently allocating resources (e.g., bandwidth, power, and processing capabilities) in optical DCNs to optimize performance and reduce operational costs.
- Network Optimization: Focusing on strategies and techniques for enhancing the overall performance, reliability, and scalability of optical DCNs, including fault tolerance and resilience in the face of failures or traffic congestion.
- Energy Efficiency: Analyzing how to reduce the energy consumption of optical data center networks through innovative approaches to network design, resource management, and power-efficient optical devices.
- Integration of Emerging Optical Devices: Investigating the role of emerging optical devices, such as photonic integrated circuits (PICs), optical interconnects, and new modulation schemes, in advancing optical DCN capabilities.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Photonics is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2400 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
