Recent Progress in Biomedical Optical Technologies
This special issue belongs to the section “Biophotonics and Biomedical Optics“.
Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
Over the past decade, innovations in photonics and optical engineering have profoundly transformed biomedical sensing and measurement. Emerging optical technologies—enabled by advances in light sources, detectors, optical components and computational methods—are providing unprecedented capabilities for non-invasive, real-time and high-resolution monitoring of physiological parameters and tissue function. This Special Issue aims to highlight recent breakthroughs in optical methods, instruments and their integrated applications, with a particular emphasis on health sensing and diagnostic technologies.
We invite contributions that explore novel optical techniques, system designs and translational applications in biomedicine. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:
- Functional near-infrared spectroscopy and near-infrared spectroscopy
- Diffuse optical tomography and imaging
- Photoplethysmography and its advanced derivatives
- Medical magnetic resonance imaging and analysis
- Wearable and portable optical health sensors
- Miniaturized and integrated biophotonic devices
- Multimodal optical sensing and hybrid imaging systems
- AI-enhanced optical signal processing and interpretation
- Point-of-care and continuous monitoring optical technologies
- Translational studies and clinical validation of optical sensing platforms
This issue seeks to bring together researchers from optics, biomedical engineering, clinical sciences and data analysis to share cutting-edge developments and foster solutions for next-generation biomedical optical technologies.
We look forward to receiving your contributions.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Photonics is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2400 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
