Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Biophotonics is an interdisciplinary field that merges the principles and technologies of photonics with biological systems. This field is driving significant advancements in medical diagnostics, health monitoring, and environmental applications by providing precise and highly sensitive techniques.

In the medical and health sectors, biophotonics has revolutionized diagnostics and treatment methods. Techniques such as optical imaging, laser surgery, and photodynamic therapy have improved the precision and effectiveness of medical interventions. Non-invasive health monitoring systems and wearable devices utilizing biophotonics offer real-time data, enhancing patient care and outcomes.

Environmentally, biophotonics plays a vital role in monitoring and protecting ecosystems. Remote sensing and advanced photonic sensors enable the detection of pollutants and environmental changes with high sensitivity. These technologies facilitate early intervention and the effective management of environmental hazards, contributing to the sustainability of natural resources.

Recent advancements in biophotonics have led to the development of more sophisticated and efficient tools for both medical and environmental applications. The field is witnessing rapid growth, driven by ongoing research, innovation, and increasing investment.

This Special Issue aims to highlight the latest research and developments of biophotonics in medical, diagnosis, health monitoring, and environmental applications. We invite contributions from researchers in the field, including original research articles and review papers. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to, the following:

immunophotonics; neurophotonics; optogenetics; photonics in cardiology; ophthalmic technologies; optical methods for tumor treatment and detection; photonics in surgery: devices and applications; biomedical imaging; microfluidics and medical microsystems; smart medical home; nearable and wearable devices; biomedical and clinical diagnostic; photonic diagnosis and monitoring of diseases; optical fibers and sensors for medical diagnostics and treatment; sports biophotonics and telemetric body function monitoring; physiologic parameter monitoring; body positioning monitoring and injury prevention; quantum effects and measurement techniques in biology and biophotonics; air, particle, and aerosol analysis; environmental analysis of air, water, and soil; pollutants and environmental changes detection; sensors and data processing methods for analysis of the environment; LIDAR and spectroscopy; space and extraterrestrial environmental sensing and satellite imaging; photonic for industrial process control and optimization; food-tech industry and agritech applications

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Photonics is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2400 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.

Benefits of Publishing in a Special Issue

  • Ease of navigation: Grouping papers by topic helps scholars navigate broad scope journals more efficiently.
  • Greater discoverability: Special Issues support the reach and impact of scientific research. Articles in Special Issues are more discoverable and cited more frequently.
  • Expansion of research network: Special Issues facilitate connections among authors, fostering scientific collaborations.
  • External promotion: Articles in Special Issues are often promoted through the journal's social media, increasing their visibility.
  • e-Book format: Special Issues with more than 10 articles can be published as dedicated e-books, ensuring wide and rapid dissemination.
