Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

It is my pleasure to invite you to contribute to this Special Issue of the Pharmaceuticals Journal, dedicated to exploring contemporary challenges and emerging solutions in antimicrobial use in modern healthcare.

Antimicrobial resistance remains one of the most pressing global public health threats, driven by complex and interconnected factors, including inappropriate antimicrobial use, limited therapeutic options, and disparities in access to effective treatments. Addressing this challenge requires a multimodal approach that extends beyond conventional antibiotic therapies and needs innovation across clinical, pharmaceutical, technological, and policy domains.

This Special Issue aims to bring together high-quality original research articles, reviews, and perspectives that examine rational antimicrobial use across clinical and high-risk settings, while also highlighting alternative strategies beyond antibiotics to combat resistant pathogens, like novel drug delivery systems designed to improve antimicrobial efficacy, reduce toxicity, and overcome biological barriers such as biofilms. In addition, the issue welcomes real-world evidence, digital health tools, and data-driven approaches to enhance antimicrobial stewardship and optimize prescribing practices.

Through this Special Issue, we aim to provide a comprehensive, forward-looking overview of current research and practice, fostering interdisciplinary dialogue and supporting the development of sustainable strategies to preserve antimicrobial effectiveness. We hope that the contributions collected herein will inform clinicians, researchers, and policymakers alike and ultimately improve patient outcomes and public health worldwide.

We look forward to your valuable contributions.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Pharmaceuticals is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2900 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
