Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a family of conditions characterized by chronic, relapsing inflammation of the gastrointestinal tract. IBD, which can be roughly sub-divided into ulcerative colitis (UC) and Crohn’s disease (CD), is estimated to affect as many as 5 million people worldwide and has demonstrated increasing prevalence in developing countries in Africa, Asia, and Latin America. Although various treatment regimens have been developed in preceding decades to control IBD symptoms, there is no cure for IBD and patients face long-term consequences such as an increased risk of colorectal cancer and surgical intervention. These sequelae are thought to be at least partly due to poor control of intestinal inflammation; thus, the development of improved IBD therapeutics is a research field of particular importance to patient well-being.
Modern IBD treatment guidelines focus on the induction and maintenance of clinical and endoscopic remission, often using a combination of immunosuppressant antibodies (“biologics”) and older, well-established small molecules such as methotrexate and thiopurines. Other alternative therapies such as fecal microbiota transplant (FMT) have also been investigated as a means of achieving and maintaining remission. In this Special Issue of Pharmaceuticals, we explore various strategies for the treatment of IBD with a focus on recent discoveries and/or especially novel approaches. Authors are invited to submit original research articles or reviews that highlight these developments for publication.
I look forward to your exciting contributions.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Pharmaceuticals is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2900 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
