Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Bone loss is a silent disease. The diagnosis of osteoporosis typically occurs after a bone fracture, and there is very little clinical emphasis on maximizing peak bone mass, maintaining bone mass through adulthood, and preventing bone mass loss in later life. Standard nutritional therapy for the prevention and treatment of osteoporosis is limited to increasing the consumption of calcium- and vitamin D-containing foods or supplements, in addition to lifestyle changes such as smoking cessation. Therefore, the purpose of this Special Issue is to lay a foundation for new dietary guidelines related to the prevention and treatment of osteoporosis. The goal is to expand beyond calcium and vitamin D, and bone itself, to optimize bone nutrition. This Special Issue incorporates a broad range of topics related to bone nutrition, including, but not limited to, the following:

  • Bone-muscle-adipose crosstalk;
  • Gut–bone axis;
  • Special populations, e.g., pregnancy;
  • Dietary patterns including the keto diet;
  • Drug-diet interactions, e.g., GLP-1 receptor agonists.

We encourage submissions of original research articles and reviews that address these themes or other relevant aspects of bone nutrition. Manuscripts should adhere to the journal's guidelines and will undergo rigorous peer review to ensure scientific rigor and relevance.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Nutrients is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2900 CHF (Swiss Francs).
