Dietary Modulation of the Gut–Brain Axis: Nutraceuticals, Extracellular Vesicles and Metabolic Perspective
This special issue belongs to the section “Nutrition and Neuro Sciences“.
Special Issue Information
Dear Collegues,
The gut–brain axis comprises crosstalk between the gut and the brain. On the one hand, the enteric nervous system releases several molecules such as neurotransmitters to regulate the gut functions. Conversely, the brain releases other neurotransmitters which may regulate the gut functions, establishing a bidirectional relationship between the gut and the brain.
Mechanisms for communication from the gut to the brain have been investigated and numerous of them are involved in dietary modulation.
Extracellular vesicles are nanoparticles released by cells from different origins, including probiotics, and they could also work as carriers of other compounds such as nutraceuticals. Both extracellular vesicles and nutraceuticals may be studied by metabolomics analysis in order to clarify their relationship with gut–brain axis mechanisms.
The aim of this Special Issue is to investigate molecules, such as extracellular vesicles derived from probiotics or nutraceuticals, and their influence on the gut–brain axis mechanisms. Metabolites derived from these molecules could modulate brain–gut axis crosstalk mechanisms.
This Special Issue welcomes original research articles, reviews, systematic reviews and meta-analyses.
Suggested themes include, but are not limited to, the following areas:
- Metabolomics of extracellular vesicles derived from probiotics and their impact on brain–gut axis mechanisms.
- Nutraceuticals and their impact on gut–brain axis mechanisms.
- Metabolites from dietary compounds and their impact on the mechanisms of the brain–gut axis.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Nutrients is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2900 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
