Dear Colleagues,
Lipids are indispensable to dietary nutrition; balancing their intake and endogenous metabolism is vital for human health. Once primarily viewed as energy sources, dietary lipids are now recognized for their pleiotropic roles. The risks of high-fat diets (e.g., cardiovascular disease, metabolic dysregulation) and extreme fat restriction (e.g., "fat-phobia"-linked malnutrition, ketogenic diet-related micronutrient deficiencies) have driven a paradigm shift: optimal lipid balance, not indiscriminate reduction, is key to resilience and disease prevention. Modern research reveals that dietary lipids and their metabolic regulation exert far-reaching impacts beyond energy supply. As structural components of cell membranes (e.g., phospholipids, cholesterol) and critical signaling mediators, they orchestrate intracellular pathways, epigenetic regulation, and metabolic homeostasis, directly influencing inflammation modulation, cellular senescence, and immune function.
This Special Issue, ‘The Lipid–Health Connection: How Dietary Intake and Lipid Metabolism Affect Human Health’, aims to showcase cutting-edge research exploring how dietary lipid components (including essential and functional lipids, with focus on appropriate intake and utilization) regulate metabolic networks to determine health outcomes. It seeks to deepen our understanding of dietary lipids’ multifaceted roles in health, emphasizing the joint impact of intake and metabolic regulation.
We invite contributions that elucidate these mechanisms and their implications, fostering dialog on functional lipids’ transformative potential in healthcare.
