Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Cellular senescence is a fundamental biological process contributing to aging and the development of age-related diseases. Accumulating evidence indicates that nutritional status, metabolic regulation, and dietary factors play critical roles in modulating cellular senescence and organismal aging. In particular, bioactive compounds derived from foods and natural sources have emerged as promising modulators of oxidative stress, mitochondrial function, and senescence-associated signaling pathways.

In addition to aging biology, increasing attention has been given to therapy-induced senescence (TIS) as a novel anticancer strategy. Nutritional interventions and bioactive compounds may enhance or modulate senescence responses in cancer cells, offering potential avenues for cancer prevention and treatment.

We seek to bridge mechanistic insights with translational and clinical perspectives, highlighting the potential of nutrition-based approaches in promoting healthy aging and combating disease.

This Special Issue welcomes original research articles, reviews, and systematic studies covering, but not limited to, the following topics:

  • Nutritional regulation of cellular senescence and aging;
  • Roles of bioactive compounds, nutraceuticals, and functional foods in modulating senescence;
  • Senescence-inducing anticancer strategies and therapy-induced senescence (TIS);
  • Nutritional and metabolic modulation of cancer cell senescence;
  • Synergistic effects of dietary compounds with chemotherapeutic agents in inducing senescence;
  • Dietary patterns (e.g., caloric restriction, intermittent fasting, Mediterranean diet) and aging;
  • Metabolic regulation of aging, including AMPK, mTOR, and sirtuin signaling pathways;
  • Oxidative stress, mitochondrial dysfunction, and redox homeostasis in senescence;
  • Autophagy, mitophagy, and proteostasis in aging processes;
  • Gut microbiota and diet–microbiome interactions in aging and senescence;
  • Probiotics, prebiotics, and postbiotics in age-related health;
  • Clinical nutrition and dietary interventions targeting aging-related diseases;
  • Translational studies linking nutrition to age-associated disorders (e.g., sarcopenia, neurodegeneration, cardiometabolic diseases);
  • Epidemiological and population-based studies on diet and aging outcomes.

We particularly encourage interdisciplinary studies that integrate molecular mechanisms, nutritional interventions, and clinical or population-level evidence to advance the understanding of nutrition-driven modulation of aging, cellular senescence, and cancer-related processes. Submissions addressing both fundamental mechanisms and applied nutritional strategies are highly encouraged.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Nutrients is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2900 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
