Dear Colleagues,
With an annual incidence of over 250,000 million cases, malaria remains one of the major public health problems despite significant investments in preventive measures, research, and drug development. Indeed, this vector-borne parasitosis, caused by Plasmodium, is responsible for hundreds of thousand deaths annually, mostly children under five, despite effective treatments and vaccines. In fact, the incidence and mortality rates of this deadly infection are slowly increasing after decades of constant reduction.
One of the major threats is the spontaneous emergence of resistances to the currently approved drugs, especially to artemisinin derivatives, which constitute the latest breakthrough among small molecule antimalarials. Indeed, recent studies proved that various mutations PfKelch13 propeller domain, associated with a delayed parasite clearance, appeared independently in different countries, first in the Greater Mekong subregion and now Africa. As a result, there is an urgent need for new treatments.
This Special Issue “Natural Compounds and Chemical Compounds with Antimalarial Activity” aims to highlight the most recent developments in the discovery of small molecules to tackle the malaria threat. This issue will focus on the discovery of new chemical matter against known or non-canonical targets, with emphasis on the potential as preclinical leads of the reported hits.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. Molecules is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
