Dear Colleagues,
Recurrent pain and inflammation are the signs most frequently reported during a physician appointment. Chronic pain and inflammation affect quality of life by inducing disability and inability to move, including at work, among other conditions.
In the treatment of inflammation and associated pain, various therapeutic options have been considered. The first option is nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. However, these drugs induce gastric ulcers and have other adverse effects. Another therapeutic option is opioid drugs. However, prolonged use can cause neurotoxicity. Disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs are another option for treating inflammatory diseases; however, these drugs cause myelosuppression, liver and kidney toxicity, and have other effects.
Despite their widespread use, the chemical composition, pharmacological properties, and safety profiles of numerous medicinal plants remain insufficiently explored. Scientific validation through rigorous chemical and biological investigations is, therefore, essential. Salicylic acid, morphine, capsaicin, and other naturally derived drugs have been used for the treatment of pain.
This Special Issue prioritizes research into the pharmacological activities and underlying molecular mechanisms of medicinal plant extracts and their bioactive compounds, with specific focus on anti-inflammatory and antinociceptive effects investigated via in vitro and in vivo experimental models. Studies evaluating the synergistic effects of plant-derived compounds/plant extracts with other analgesics or plant-derived compounds are welcome in this Special Issue
