Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Current research in the field of organic chemistry of sulfur and selenium focuses on expanding the possibilities of synthesis, catalysis, and the design of functional materials. Sulfur- and selenium-containing compounds are of interest not only as intermediates for the synthesis of complex molecules but also because of their biological properties. In selenium chemistry, particular attention is given to the development of advanced, sustainable redox methods that enable selective functional group transformations. Selenium compounds, thanks to the wide range of accessible oxidation states and the ease of generating reactive species directly during the reaction, are becoming key tools in catalytic oxidation and reduction processes, making these methods more environmentally friendly and safer. Moreover, selenium atoms in organic compounds show high affinity for various polar functional groups, forming weak noncovalent interactions between selenium and heteroatoms of main group elements (N, O, or halogens). At the same time, the organic chemistry of sulfur remains an area of intensive study, particularly in the context of functional materials, organocatalysis, and the design of biologically active compounds.

Its compounds are crucial in modern technologies: from new polymers to functional materials for electronics and energy applications. Interestingly, scientists are also investigating how the presence of a sulfur atom can influence the course of organic reactions. These discoveries help design increasingly efficient synthetic methods and new materials, such as transparent, stable polymers or structures useful in quantum electronics. Furthermore, materials based on sulfur and selenium—such as polymers and inorganic superconducting structures—are gaining importance in electronic applications, including quantum dot technology and new polymer materials with high stability and transparency. This Special Issue, “Recent Progress in the Field of Sulfur and Selenium Organic Chemistry”, aims to present interesting and inspiring research (experimental, theoretical, and comprehensive experimental/theoretical) on synthesis and structural analysis and new superconducting materials, as well as methods of delivery and biotransformation of bioactive organic compounds containing sulfur and selenium. We look forward to receiving articles that fit within the scope of this Special Issue.

Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. Molecules is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
