Dear Colleagues,
In recent years, evidence supporting the need for pandemic preparedness against emerging viral pathogens has become striking.
Particular efforts are needed against emerging RNA viruses that possess a high pathologic potential and represent the major source of new possible spillover events.
The effective management of emerging viral infections has a narrow window of opportunity for first-line mitigation measures. In this respect, the availability of ready-to-use small-molecule therapeutics represents an essential tool.
To achieve this, the need to exploit the viral enzymatic functions as possible drug targets is the first and most promising strategy. In this field, the role of computational techniques is gaining attention, increasing the success rate of screening campaigns, helping to dissect the mode of interaction between compounds and their targets, and helping to design improved chemical scaffolds. In this Special Issue, we aim to collect the most advanced studies on viral enzyme-targeting small molecules to increase the knowledge and boost the effort in relation to identifying new promising drug candidates.
