Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Electrokinetic (EK) effects are the induced motion of fluids, charged or polarizable particles in an electric field, i.e., e-field. Electrokinetic effects include dielectrophoresis, electro-osmosis, and electrophoresis, which are versatile mechanisms to transport, trap, separate, and characterize particles such as cells and biomolecules in microfluidic devices. Generating an effective e-field for bioparticle manipulation usually requires integrated design and fabrication of microelectrodes and microfluidic networks. The rapid development of microfabrication techniques in past decades has reduced the fabrication difficulties, helping with an increased entry of EK-on-chip products to the market. The integration of electrokinetic systems into microfluidic Lab-on-a-Chip devices has enabled fast, highly sensitive, highly selective, and label-free characterization and manipulation of target bio-particles.

Numerous EK-based microfluidic systems for biological or electronic applications have already been the subject of intensive research for decades. This Special Issue aims to focus on novel practical applications and commercial activities using EK or hybrid-EK mechanisms. In addition, this Special Issue will also cover simple and effective approaches to realize integrated EK-on-chip devices, as well as highly complex electrokinetic systems but with potential killer applications.
