Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
Silicon and other semiconductor-based scintillation and direct conversion detectors have held a prominent position in radiation detection since the 1960s, driven by applications ranging from particle physics, over material science, to astronomy. These detectors yield very high spatial resolution and linearity, and due to the appearance of SiPMs and similar internal gain devices, they offer promising solutions with sub-nanosecond time-resolutions and near single-photon counting capabilities. Currently, the state of the art in these technologies has been promoted by projects such as the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN for high-energy particles, the Ice-Cube experiment searching for neutrinos, or the James Webb Space Telescope operating in the MIR and FIR parts of the spectra. On the other hand, technologies based on superconducting materials have matured in such a way that they contribute to low-energy radiation detection and, together with gas and liquid-scintillation-based detector systems, fulfil the technology possibilities at hand. This Special Issue on “Particle Detectors” seeks to provide a wide overview of the state of the art and emerging technologies in the field of radiation and particle detection, featuring contributions from experts from different areas facing increasing challenges in this fascinating field.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. Micromachines is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
