Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Infectious diseases necessitate innovative approaches to decipher their complex host interactions. Metabolomics, the comprehensive analysis of small molecules, offers a powerful lens to dissect the metabolic alterations during infection. This Special Issue aims to showcase cutting-edge advances in applying metabolomics in this field.

Focus: The core focus is on the metabolic alterations that occur with infectious diseases. We aim to highlight studies elucidating how infection triggers host metabolic reprogramming and how host metabolism influences pathogen survival. Emphasis will be on identifying key metabolic pathways and specific metabolites mediating the infection process.

Scope: This Special Issue welcomes metabolomic studies utilizing diverse platforms to investigate a wide range of infectious diseases. Studies integrating metabolomics with other omics data are also encouraged. Key topics include the identification of novel biomarkers for diagnosis and prognosis; the elucidation of metabolic mechanisms driving pathogenesis; understanding metabolic bases of host susceptibility and resistance; application in drug discovery; longitudinal studies of disease progression and treatment response; and the metabolomics of co-infections and antimicrobial resistance.

Purpose: This Special Issue aims to advance our understanding of the metabolic underpinnings of infectious diseases. By compiling leading research, we intend to highlight the potential of metabolomics for novel insights; stimulate interdisciplinary collaborations; identify translational opportunities for improved diagnostics, prevention, and treatment; and serve as a valuable resource for researchers in the field. We invite original research, reviews, and methodological advancements to contribute to a deeper understanding of the metabolic landscape of infection and pave the way for more effective combat strategies.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Metabolites is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2700 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
