Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases remain the leading causes of morbidity and mortality worldwide, driven by complex interactions between genetic, environmental, and metabolic factors. Emerging evidence indicates that metabolic dysregulation is a central contributor to disease initiation, progression, and recovery across the heart–brain axis. Alterations in glucose and lipid metabolism, mitochondrial dysfunction, redox imbalance, and amino acid and nucleotide metabolism profoundly influence vascular integrity, inflammation, energy homeostasis, and cell survival in both cardiac and cerebral tissues.

This Special Issue aims to provide a comprehensive overview of recent advances in understanding of how metabolic pathways regulate cardiovascular and cerebrovascular physiology and pathology. It will highlight cutting-edge research on metabolic reprogramming in conditions such as myocardial infarction, heart failure, atherosclerosis, stroke, vascular dementia, and related neurovascular disorders. This collection will place emphasis on cell-type-specific metabolism in cardiomyocytes, endothelial cells, vascular smooth muscle cells, neurons, glia, and immune cells, as well as metabolic crosstalk within the neurovascular and cardiometabolic systems. The Special Issue will feature original research articles, reviews, and translational studies covering topics including mitochondrial dynamics, oxidative stress, hypoxia signaling, lipid handling, metabolic inflammation, and emerging therapeutic strategies targeting metabolic pathways. By integrating insights from molecular biology, omics technologies, and preclinical and clinical studies, Metabolites seeks to advance mechanistic understanding and identify novel metabolic targets for the prevention and treatment of cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. Metabolites is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
