Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
Cellular metabolism is no longer viewed as a passive downstream consequence of gene expression, but rather as a highly regulated and dynamic network controlled by transcriptional, post-transcriptional, and epigenetic mechanisms. Recent advances in genomics, transcriptomics, and systems biology have revealed that metabolic pathways are tightly governed by gene regulatory programs, which in turn influence cell growth, differentiation, stress responses, and disease progression.
This Special Issue aims to provide a comprehensive and integrative view of how gene regulation shapes metabolic pathways, with a particular focus on mitochondrial biogenesis, nutrient metabolism (lipids and amino acids), cellular biogenesis, and growth-related signaling pathways such as mTOR and MAPK. These processes are central to fundamental biology and the pathogenesis of cancer, metabolic disorders, cardiovascular diseases, and aging.
By bringing together experimental, computational, and theoretical contributions, this Special Issue will highlight emerging concepts, novel regulatory mechanisms, and translational implications of gene-regulated metabolism.
We invite original research articles and reviews covering, but not limited to, the following topics:
- Gene regulatory networks controlling mitochondrial biogenesis and function;
- Transcriptional and post-transcriptional regulation of lipid and amino acid metabolisms;
- Nuclear–mitochondrial communication and retrograde signaling;
- Regulation of cellular biogenesis and organelle homeostasis;
- mTOR and MAPK signaling in metabolic control and growth regulation;
- Metabolic reprogramming in cancer, cardiovascular disease, and metabolic disorders;
- Epigenetic regulation of metabolic genes;
- Single-cell, multi-omics, and systems biology approaches to metabolic regulation;
- Evolutionary and comparative perspectives on gene-regulated metabolism.
Both mechanistic studies and data-driven analyses are encouraged, as well as interdisciplinary approaches bridging molecular biology, genomics, metabolism, and computational biology.

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. Metabolites is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
