Dear Colleagues,
The global prevalence of metabolic diseases, including type 2 diabetes, obesity, and cardiovascular disorders, has reached alarming levels, driven by sedentary lifestyles, poor dietary patterns, and aging populations. Chronic low-grade inflammation is widely recognized as a central pathological mechanism linking these conditions, creating a vicious cycle where metabolic dysfunction exacerbates inflammatory responses and vice versa. Against this backdrop, physical exercise has emerged as a cornerstone of preventive and therapeutic intervention, with mounting evidence demonstrating its ability to modulate inflammatory pathways, improve metabolic homeostasis, and reduce disease risk. However, significant challenges remain in translating laboratory findings into clinical practice, including the need for personalized exercise prescriptions, better understanding of dose-response relationships, and integration of interdisciplinary insights to address the complex interplay between exercise, inflammation, and metabolism.
This research area is exceptionally timely, as it aligns with global public health priorities to combat non-communicable diseases and promote healthy aging. For academia, it offers opportunities to unravel the molecular and cellular mechanisms underlying exercise-induced anti-inflammatory effects, identify novel biomarkers for disease progression and treatment response, and bridge gaps between exercise physiology, immunology, and metabolic medicine. For practice, it holds great promise for developing evidence-based, accessible strategies to enhance patient outcomes, reduce healthcare burdens, and empower individuals to take proactive control of their metabolic health. The interdisciplinary nature of this field also fosters collaboration across disciplines, from basic science to clinical research and public health, creating a holistic approach to addressing metabolic disease challenges.
This Special Issue aims to present and disseminate the most recent advances related to the interplay between exercise, inflammation, and metabolic diseases, with a focus on interdisciplinary insights that advance both scientific understanding and clinical application. We invite contributions addressing the following scope: original research articles, reviews, and clinical studies that explore the molecular, cellular, and systemic mechanisms by which exercise modulates inflammatory pathways in metabolic disorders; investigations into the efficacy of different exercise modalities (e.g., aerobic, resistance, high-intensity interval training) on inflammatory biomarkers and metabolic outcomes; studies on personalized exercise prescription strategies for specific populations (e.g., obese individuals, type 2 diabetes patients, older adults); and interdisciplinary approaches that integrate exercise science, immunology, endocrinology, and public health to address metabolic disease prevention and management. We welcome submissions that highlight innovative research, translational applications, and emerging perspectives to advance this critical field.
