Dear Colleagues,
Cancer cells undergo profound metabolic reprogramming to support rapid growth, evasion of cell death, and adaptation to harsh microenvironments, with energy metabolism serving as a central hallmark. This Special Issue of Metabolites solicits original research and reviews that delve into the energy metabolism of cancer cells. The Special Issue will emphasize translational perspectives grounded in metabolomics and metabolic biochemistry, and spanning the bench-to-bedside-to-population research continuum. At the foundational level, we invite studies on key pathways such as aerobic glycolysis (Warburg effect), mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation, glutaminolysis, and lipid metabolism, utilizing advanced omics technologies, flux analysis, and computational modeling to elucidate metabolite dynamics and regulatory networks. Progressing to clinical translational research (CTR), contributions may explore metabolic biomarkers for early detection, prognostic assessment, and therapeutic monitoring in patient samples, including non-invasive imaging and profiling methods that quantify metabolite alterations in tumors. We encourage investigations into targeted interventions, such as inhibitors of metabolic enzymes or nutrient-modulating therapies, evaluated through preclinical models and clinical trials for safety, efficacy, and personalization based on metabolic phenotypes. To bridge to broader applications, submissions should address how these insights inform practice, guidance and policy recommendations, including integration into diagnostic protocols and treatment guidelines for metabolic diseases like cancer. At the population level, we welcome epidemiological metabolomics studies that examine metabolite profiles in diverse cohorts, especially where disparities are evident. All submissions must maintain a substantial focus on the measurement, analysis, or biological roles of metabolites and pathways. By integrating these layers, this issue aims to advance metabolomics-driven innovations in oncology.
