Dear Colleagues,
Fat and glucose metabolism are fundamental biological processes that operate in a tightly coordinated manner to maintain systemic energy homeostasis. These pathways are highly interconnected, sharing key regulatory nodes that ensure a continuous and balanced supply of energy substrates in response to cellular demand. Hepatic and adipose tissues play central roles in lipid homeostasis, regulating the lipolytic breakdown of triglycerides into free fatty acids and glycerol, which can be oxidized for energy or re-esterified for storage. In parallel, glucose metabolism, primarily orchestrated by insulin and glucagon, maintains stable circulating glucose levels to support the energy requirements of glucose-dependent tissues such as the brain, through glycolysis and mitochondrial oxidation.
Disruptions in the cross-talk between fat and glucose metabolism contribute to a broad spectrum of metabolic disorders, including obesity, insulin resistance, metabolic dysfunction–associated fatty liver disease and type 2 diabetes. These conditions collectively represent a growing global health burden. A deeper understanding of the molecular, cellular and physiological mechanisms governing the interplay between lipid and glucose pathways is therefore critical for the development of novel therapeutic strategies aimed at restoring metabolic health.
This Special Issue, entitled “Fat and Glucose Metabolism: Mechanisms and Regulation,” welcomes submissions of original research articles, reviews, clinical studies, intervention trials and meta-analyses that investigate the interconnected regulation of these metabolic systems. We particularly encourage studies that identify biomarkers, molecular regulators, therapeutic targets, or innovative interventions aimed at modulating fat and glucose metabolic pathways.

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. Metabolites is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
