Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

There is an ongoing increase in the percentage of people with diabetes, especially in developed countries. There are several etiopathogenetic factors that can cause diabetes, and one of the key ones is the disruption of the homeostatic microbiome.

The homeostatic microbiome (microbiota) consists of all of the microorganisms (bacteria, viruses, and fungi) that inhabit the human body, especially the mucosa and the soft tissue of certain organs. Their mutual relationship and actions maintain the normal homeostasis of the organism.

There are studies indicating that certain saprophytes in the intestinal system can increase their presence, directly causing various metabolic changes, impaired insulin secretion, and insulin resistance due to the effects of external factors (e.g., drugs, nutrition, various infections with other pathogens, etc.).

The focus of this Special Issue is on the impacts microorganisms have on obesity, insulin resistance, and diabetes. Research focusing on metabolomics aspects is also welcome. These key investigations will contribute to the current understanding of the specific relationships between host cells and certain microorganisms, which, along with their metabolites, can directly or indirectly affect the changes in the functional capacity of pancreatic beta cells and thus cause insulin secretion disorders .

Contributions should present their findings in a simple way without large metagenomic tables so that the cause can be pinpointed at the level of the microorganism species, if possible. This is so that not only researchers with specific knowledge would be able to understand the results, but also general readers in the medical sciences field.

Papers examining the presence of specific microorganism strains in foods used in daily diets and characteristic of specific populations, such as fermented drinks and food, are also welcome. Of equal interest are manuscripts that give insight into how canned food and its additives affect the development of healthy homeostatic microbiomes.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. Metabolites is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
