Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Surgical site infections (SSI) continue to pose significant morbidity after colorectal surgery with prevalence of 15–30%, and also have a 3% mortality rate leading to additional interventions and higher financial costs. Surgical site infections are classified as either superficial, deep, or organ-space SSIs.

Because SSI is associated with increased morbidity and mortality, measures for the prevention and treatment are essential. Prehospital bundle elements include bowel preparation, MRSA, other bacteriologic screening, preoperative bathing, operative site hair removal, and smoking cessation. Intraoperative measures include the type of surgical approach (minimally invasive) and application of wound protector. Postoperative measures involve enhanced recovery after surgery or similar multidisciplinary protocols, as well as prophylactic negative pressure wound dressings.

In this Special Issue dedicated to the prevention and treatment of surgical site infection in colorectal surgery and hosted by Medicina, current findings in research and clinical are welcome.
