Dear colleagues,
In this Special Issue regarding acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), many fields are covered, with the aim of clarifying the following: I) epidemiology (incidence, management outcomes, mortality), ii) pathophysiology, iii) diagnosis considerations, iv) recent notions on clinical management, and v) new treatments such as mesenchymal stem cells that highlight the new phenotypes of ARDS. The causes of ARDS are multifactorial, and the most common are sepsis, bacterial and viral pneumonia, aspiration pneumonia, pancreatitis, serious trauma, and drug overdose. However, the diagnostic and therapeutic criteria are not well defined and are still debated. This Special Issue reports the fundamentals of mechanical ventilation, neuromuscular blockade, pharmacological management, and possible post-ARDS complications such as multi-organ failure, pneumothorax, pulmonary fibrosis, and ventilator-associated pneumonia. It also considers the commonalities between ARDS and COVID-19 and their relative distinctions with COVID-19 which is caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), including well-researched clinical trials.
In summary, this Special Issue improves the clinical approach of ARDS by highlighting controversies and new research on various topics, reducing gaps by improving the knowledge of clinical characteristics and pathological mechanisms and suggesting future options.
